This has got to be the most Beautiful song Barbara has ever produced. I was nine years old when this movie came out. My mother went along with her friends to see this movie, and I was there as a 'tag-a-long.' I still remember all the crying my mother and her friends went through toward the end of this movie, but I didn't. However, that was decades ago, but for some odd reason, after watching this movie a few times later on (in my adult life), I can't help but cry when this song is played. It is just one of those incredibly good Barbara Streisand songs that just touches me so deeply for reason I cannot explain. Perhaps it is about the emotional aspect related to the movie and of some feelings I may now have as an adult with regard to personal struggles and losses over the years. And maybe it is largely now a part of how I am still dealing with the loss of my mother passing back in '05 and of not having her here anymore... but whatever it is, this song tears me up inside deeply.

i'll never forget the evening i sat on the edge of the bed, turned up the volume on my radio and heard that Barbra's new song would be debuted after the commercial break. i waited, and ugh! It was like a soft bolt of lightning! i was stunned by the beauty of the song, the extraordinary use of that magnificent instrument she has and the feelings "Evergreen" stirred up within me. Next thing you know, i had the 45 on automatic, playing all night on my GE fold-out record-player while i slept. What's funny is that shortly afterward when i began writing songs, i could no longer fall asleep with music playing. So, it's crazy, but one night years later, while i was at the tale end of being able to sleep with the radio on, i had the volume down so low the sound was barely detectable, and out of a solid sleep state i awoke to frantically reach for the radio and turn the volume up. Guess what song was playing? It's been my favorite song ever since that first night i'd heard it.

Barbra was asked about her vocal abilities in an interview and she said she takes it for granted and admitted that was probably not such a good thing to do. She's so honest and she is one of the greatest women singers to gift us such a talent. To throw another great singer into the mix ... beautiful voice and control like Streisand. It is Shirley Basse, I heard her in a duet with Neil Diamond and just "wow" to her vocals. That said, Barbra is my all time favorite and no one can take her place.
