A model has created an oasis in the middle of New York City by cramming 500 plants into her apartment. Self confessed “crazy plant lady” Summer Rayne Oakes decided to turn her Brooklyn apartment into a forest after her roommate moved out six years ago. Since then she has expanded the collection in her 1,200 square foot apartment and now has more than 150 plant species including a full forest wall, pineapple plants and even a banana tree.

Her Apartment looks actually amazing, actually lol. Sure it's over run with plants, but the plants are taken care of, it's organized, and not messy or dirty, the apartment actually looks pretty clean, considering all the plants in there. It's really beautiful, the set up she has in there. There might be a tendency to be a hoarder, but she looks like she has her plants under control. I love to see what she can do with a garden. Also how cool would it be to have a bio garden apartment, where the walls have growing living vines and plants you can grow. I love to see someone make that some day.

When I had depression and was going to therapy for it, my therapist told me to start growing plants, to have something to attend to and take care of every day. So I bought a crocus, and kept it in my bedroom. It did wonders, it gave me motivation to get up in the morning. The collection has grown since then, I currently have two miniature bamboo, a narcissus, the same Lauren’s Rainbow Croton, and three different cacti. I want to try growing an ivy next, or find some sort of indoor flowering plant. Something small enough that I don’t have to worry about putting it into a smaller pot and then repotting it later.

little hack from a fellow indoor planter- mirrors and reflective surfaces work wonders to get rid of dark corners indoors! i make sure my plants that love direct sunlight take the brunt of the harsher reflections but with well-placed mirrors and brighter walls/mid to high gloss paints that reflect light better, you get rid of most of the dark corners. I'm mostly growing simpler plants and ones that don't need anything over 6-7 hours of good sun but i'm about to invest in at least one glow light because i want to get a miniature fruit tree!!

Actually, they do! At day they do a process called Photosynthesis in which they use the energy from light, Water and Carbon Dioxide and tear apart the molecules. In the second step the plants recombine those seperated Carbon, Oxygen, and Hydrogen atoms into sugar. After making the sugar there is some oxygen left over and it is released. The formula is 6(CO2) + 6(H2O) + Energy (Light) ---> C6H12O6 + 6(O2). At night plants do a process called Aerobic Respiration and they take in oxygen and give release CO2. That's because they are breaking down that sugar to get energy for growth and combining other elements, minerals, and chemicals for making fruits, flowers, etc. They are doing the same thing in daylight too, but photosynthesis is so efficient that the plant uses up the carbon dioxide as it makes more sugar than it actually needs, so there is an excess of oxygen, which is released. The excess of sugar is in the sap and fruits. The formula is C6H12O6 + 6O2 ---> 6(CO2) + 6(H2O) + Energy (ATP) I am a Biology student, already took this in class.

@erikmoonweb6250 7 жыл бұрын
Well, if it's in large quantity, like her, it may be dangerous. Also, assuming you dont open a window at night. If it's only a few plant, it's completely safe. Plants take in more CO2 than they take out, also less than we do.

When my parents purchased their Brooklyn home in 1968, my mom requested that my father build her an outdoor front porch on the top floor, for the exclusive purpose of growing foliage. No one was allowed to go on the porch to sit and hang out unless they were watering the plants or involved in some type of maintenance pertaining to their care. This hobby/obsession also extended into the interior of the house in every available room. (My mom has a 40 year old "tree" growing, in her downstairs living room. A real freakin' tree! The room looks like a Druid's grove.) Fast forward to now... my parents are still alive, in that same house and the front porch is a magnificent, living, colorful assemblance of greenery, almost 50 years old ! So now, the 'great grand-kids' can go help abuelita water, feed and talk to the plants just like I did as a child and my kids did, before them. ♥

Lik she rightly said,” its natural to have plants”I don’t have an apartment her size a studio with balcony. I have a pond, a garden and many plants. Now around 100. It is very much healing and keeps home alive and birds are regular visitors. After long day at work can simply relax sitting there each day watching the birds and flowers bloom in different colors. Worth the effort. Even if we don’t realize this, plants give positivity more than any furniture or gadgets at home.

Some years ago I tried house plants for the first time. All day I would fuss over them, moving them from room to room throughout the day to catch the best sunlight, messing with the leaves and branches, watering them practically every few minutes. Anyway, despite all this loving attention they didn't seem to be doing very well. Then something came up and I needed to go away for about 10 days. I wondered and worried if they would survive without me being there for them. But, to my surprise, when I returned a week and a half later, they were thriving! There was a large amount of growth and they looked healthier than they had ever! It was as if they said to themselves when I left, "Thank God, that pain in the butt is gone!" and started partying!

Ernesto....you're watering it too much. LOL. No kidding. Let the soil dry out completely before you water it again. Cacti don't like wet feet. I have one that only blooms every 13 years on the night of the full moon. Lovely purple and cream flowers with a scent unlike anything you've ever smelled before. I've had it for over 40 years. It sits in a pot with very little soil, and the only water it gets is when it rains. Which, here in Florida, is often enough. LOL.

The Jaw Drop from visitors! Hilarious! This was me many years ago. I completely understand the passion for plants. Most of my plants are now living outside; they languished eventually inside and pest management due to weakening plants became too much maintenance. I do have to move them all inside for the winter months, which for several huge plants over 20 years old, is quite the challenge! Kudos to a beautifully maintained inside greenhouse! The plants are clearly thriving! 😄

maybe try growing succulents? they are pretty sturdy plants and dont mind a little neglect. i water my cuttings every 10 days and my full sized plants every 14 days. and i give them fertilizer once a month (though during growing season its rec amended to do twice a month if i remember correctly) and my succulents are kept indoors cause i live in an apartment with a community yard so i cant plant outside. i found that the KZbin channel GardenAnswers is very helpful.

if i ever get a house i kinda want to have a plant room. i imagine it to be small and crowded and with a tv/pc and it would be a place where you can just have tea and listen to music. that would be awesome

Poor design, should automate all the watering. Takes only 1 day, as opposed to 1 hour per day to water.

+Rollo Larson No it doesn't take 30 minutes. She has 500 plants, times 10 seconds per plant equals 5000 seconds, or 83 minutes, at the very least least 60 minutes. It's not only a matter of convenience, she has a lot of spare time, people who work can't water 500 plants manually everyday.

Valken- no, YOU'RE the mistaken one. She doesn't have to water EVERY plant EVERY day. She has them split. Half on one day and the rest the next, or some system.

+Vanessa Smith If they get proper amounts of sun, the soil will dry out everyday. Maybe some plants will survive with little sun, but they won't grow much.

As the grandson of farmers and the son of a major gardener, I'm an urban gardener and have numerous plants in my apartment. When I don't know how to grow something, I research and learn how. This has proven successful and I wish you the best in your future indoor gardening.

I lived like this for years, killing every beautiful plant I bought. I thought for sure I had a brown thumb. Turns out I was over watering them. Now I am more careful and my thumb is getting green now! Don't give up.
