A 16-year-old is suffering from a rare condition that makes her look like she's 50. Raizel Calago, from the Philippines, is 16 years old but looks middle-aged due to an undiagnosed, mystery genetic condition. Raizel told Truly: “I have a rare condition that makes me look old. I noticed my condition in 2019, I was shocked and asked myself why my face was like this.” When Raizel and her family started noticing the changes to her appearance she sought medical advice. “The doctors believe it could be progeria”, she explained. However, she is waiting for a formal diagnosis. The teenager had previously been competing in beauty pageants, but over the course of two years her body began to age rapidly and her life was turned upside down.

Hell I must have a similar condition i have been called a liar before when stating my age... I have had people mistake me for older. Its strange... Either they think im very young like 15 or 40... Both is too old or too young. It's strange. I have noticed alot of people born in the 90s appear older....i saw a guy in my class...he was 23 but full beard and huge bald spot in his head. I assumed he was a professor at first.

I saw another documentary on a condition like this, might even have been on this channel. British family of all girls. It ended with her getting plastic surgery, and she was very happy. I hope this girl doesn't feel she needs that, but my heart breaks for her. Maybe it's a dumb idea, but I thought they should meet. I don't think I have this condition, but since I was a teenager, people used to call me lady, aunt, or even grandma. I was only 17 when I went with my friend shopping, and an old man the same as my dad or older wearing a suit, called me grandma. My friends was laughing. But I was shocked and could not ever forget it. That's why I don't show neither my pictures nor my voice in social media, because they always think I'm really Old. Which makes me cry all the time.

It's so hard at 16 to accept changes in your body already going on in a typical way. But I know what it's like when things change in a rare way or a way that doctors blame on other things (in my case) for many years (decades) before even trying to get to the bottom of it. To be 16 and have a condition where you are mistaken for something you're not must be absolutely unbearable. Raizel, you are so beautiful, and what all the terrible people who bully or make fun of you don't seem to consider is the fact that in 20 years they will look just like you! Maybe even sooner. And that time begins to speed up the older you get so they can snap their fingers and suddenly realize they had been cruel to somebody who looks just like they do. It'll happen in the blink of an eye. They will live with the guilt of treating you a celebrity now, with hate and judgment instead of kindness and compassion. I have a rare genetic connective tissue disorder that has aged my hands like this. Not my face. But, it's not far off to consider that this could be a connective tissue disorder. There's a woman, a model, btw, who is around 27 now, I think. She has extreme wrinkles all over her entire body, and she appears as though she's in her 60s. She has the exact same type of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome as I do, it's just affected her differently. Ehlers-Danlos effects us all differently, it's a spectrum disorder which means of all the possible symptoms and illnesses that come with it, your gene mutation has simply picked through them like a cherry tree and you happened to get, let's say, a sleep disorder, extreme hypermobility, and/or....loose skin. Not to say Progeria isn't the cause, doctors have your case and they know what they're looking for. Here in the US they will run your blood work and photos and symptoms ask through a database and that will give them a few or several conditions they should test for. The doctors will pick through what they think fits you individually and very specifically test for the things that meet the criteria. That's what the doctors in the US are doing, and due to the pandemic, this already very lengthy process has become far longer for everyone everywhere. The model's name is Sara Geurtz. Anyone who has been patient enough to read this much of my long winded comment. I just thought it might be helpful for Raizel to see or maybe even get in touch with her somehow, if nothing else some moral support from someone who has been living it as well. Well I am so proud of her attitude about it. It really sucks to be self conscious about something so major in your opinion and the judges of others who don't matter. Who knows, maybe she was made to appear old because she has aa great deal of wisdom and is able to teach the rest of us! She's beautiful inside and out.

It looks like the condition is only affecting her face, which is interesting. The rest of her appearance looks that of her age. It really is a medical mystery because progeria affects the whole body and at a very young age, not later in life, in your teens. At least her condition hasn't affected her physical health. That's the best news. She can still chase after her dreams.

Im from the Philippines and i saw the full video on News. Her whole body became older not just her face. She have stretch marks like that of a mother of 5. There was a heart breaking scene on the news where they put her old picture side by side on who she is now and you can see the huge difference. The picture was just a year ago before she looked old. Now that I think about it I’m almost positive there was a girl in my school that had it. I noticed it in middle school, but her laugh lines would sag similar to an older women in their 50’s. That was by far the most prominent feature, but I just thought that was just how she was normally (not considering the genetic disease). She was very kind.

First let me say that you look beautiful... still. Secondly, I couldn't imagine having to experience that as a 16 year old as it's a hard time or age to get through. But I understand because I am in my 50s now and I have no idea when I aged. It makes me sad sometimes but then I remember that I am still here and I am blessed. I thought progeria was something that was always apparent in very early childhood, but apparently there's a type called Werner syndrome which may not develop until the teenage years/early adulthood. I really feel for her; I hope she gets some answers.

The progeria cases I've seen (online) look much different than her, and they don't grow like a normal child like she did. I can understand your pain coz my alopecia started when i was just 13. It was really difficult for me to stay strong and focus on my studies. There was no nights when i didnt cry to sleep.. And people would just point it out to me and say it to my face. There came a point when i wont even go out of my house. I dnt know where i got all those strength to come out of house and face the world in a daily basis. For 11 years i kept asking 'why me'. If today i look back i see only 2 things 1. Being sad and crying alone and 2. Studying. I stopped going to parties and all social gathering. I know some people would say that i shouldnt have given two fucks about what others say but all i was doing was to protect my teenage self till i grow up enough where my adult self can protect my vulnerable side. I am 26 now and doing much better in life. I have achieved my dream to become a doctor and quite satisfied with my life. I hope you read my comment coz i wanna tell you to study hard and focus on your goal. No one is thick skinned at the beginning it takes years to become strong. Make your own identity.

First of all, my heart goes out to this young woman and I hope she will get all the help that can be provided. She is still beautiful and her spirit is very young. I'm hopeful she can succeed in her career! The doctor's guess of progeria seems logical, but I have never heard of any case,where a person with progeria did not already show clear signs of rapid aging at 1-2 years old. The condition itself is very rare, but her case is even more rare. Hopefully she can see a specialist very soon.
