Seems like a meme. But in all seriousness the sticks' weight made lifting puck more difficult, not to mention it took longer. Seriously, try taking a snap shot with a stick made 40 years ago. Very quickly you'll realize why everyone just slapped the puck most of the time. Not to mention the absolute absence of any kind of consistency w/ the whippyness or flex.

I'm pretty sure most of the people commenting on here are too young to have seen Gretzky play or you would not be saying such stupid things. He is most certainly the greatest offensive player of all time, nobody has come close to doing the things he has done. The reason most of his goals were scored shooting along the ice is that goaltenders of that era were stand up goalies meaning lifting the puck would help the goalies chances of stopping it. Pretty sure if he had played in todays game he would be smart enough to figure out that since all goalies now are butterfly goalies lifting the puck is the way to score. Also, people talking about him playing in a different era have to remember that if he played in this era he would also benefit from lighter equipment and sticks along with better training, exercise techniques and nutrition. He has more assists then anybody has points, he holds more records than anyone else, not sure how anyone can deny his greatness. Having said all this, Ovechkin is a better pure goal scorer, Mario was bigger, more physical offensive player, McDavid is faster and so on, but Gretzky had the best overall ability with vision unequalled by anyone. This is coming from a Leafs fan who watched Gretzky eliminate them in 93 and still have to admit he was the best.

Its hard to say because he was scoring on Zamboni drivers that had bad knees.
@DanoFSmith-yc9tg2 жыл бұрын
Well considering he essentially had an immunity from physical contact, something no player before or after him ever had, and the fact goalies, conditioning, and the speed of the game have changed the game completely over the last 30 years, I doubt Wayne has half the points he got in the 80’s, if he played today’s game. At absolute best Wayne’s game translates roughly into a Mitch Marner of today. Good player, yet far from great.

2:30 what did the ref actually say?
@jeronimo99412 жыл бұрын
The referee thought Gretzky's stick was up that high because of a natural follow through after a shot. By rule, that would not be considered a penalty. The referee later admitted he got the call wrong but Gretzky insisted in interviews after the fact that he did not commit a penalty and it should not have been called a penalty. I've never seen the game in question so I don't know if it was ambiguous or just a bad call.

Gretzky could strategize very well, thts why he was good. If you put him in the nhl as a young man today, he'd probably do just as well.
