LEEDS PARISH #31: BARDSEY CUM RIGTON
Welcome to Bardsey cum Rigton in the city of Leeds, located right on the A58 between Scarcroft and Collingham. Although small comparatively speaking to others, this one’s full of history
Bardsey is mentioned in the Domesday Book as both Berdesei and Bereleseie, situated in the hundred of Skyrack. Its name is formed of two elements
The second element, “sey” comes from the Old English word “ēg” which means “island”. The first is agreed to be from a personal name, but exactly what this name was is not certain
Since this is not an island, it has been suggested that the naming was metaphorical, referring to a hill rising, island-like, from flat ground
Bardsey’s history centres around a few things, one of which is a castle mound. There used to be an old railway line here too, one which we’ve encountered before
Generally, it’s a predominantly middle class area of Leeds with a high proportion of retired residents. Housing is mixed and while most is private, there are some council houses dotted around
Facilities include a sports club with a cricket pitch and two football pitches; a primary school, and an Anglican church and a pub - both of which make some very bold historical claims!

My village! The first station you came across was the old police station I believe! Such a lovely and well researched video!! X

The old station was the old Police Station, with a Police House attached. At the time the Police Statuon was just single storey. As an eleven and twelve year old I often had to answer the station phone if mum was busy and dad at work or sleeping after a night shift! I can say that with 100% certainty as in the early 70s when my father was in the Police we lived there!

I did wonder if that was the police station afterwards. Knew it couldnt have been the railway station, wrong place

Good to see this tour around my childhood home village. Yes the big embroidery work you nicely highlighted in the church and rightly worked out depict village life, and the seasonal or church calendar. Many ladies of the village, including my Mum, Sandra Hanson, contributed elements to make up these impressive picture panels. Our old house is even glimpsed. In around 2000 they received some lottery funding to have the works properly framed and installed. A stand out future in this much loved old church for generations to come. Good episode, but you didn't fancy a venture down the old railway line alongside Hetchell Woods then?

@@TheVillageIdiot yes bit off beaten track, it leads to Pompocali earthworks which is technically in Thorner i think.

It's in Scarcroft, mind you it's right on the border
