Del, the alignment with the bed is technically know as its axis. If your lathe was a CNC controlled machine it would be classed as the Z Axis. On any CNC machine tool the Z Axis is always runs through the centre of the tool spindle. The machine I used to create part-programs for actually had two main spindles, one was designated as Z1, the other Z2. This gave the programmer the flexibility to control and drive them independently. It’s amazing how useful these mini lathes are for producing one-off parts. They lend themselves very nicely to the world of motorcycles as a majority of the parts to be turned (wheel spacers, bushes etc...) are well within the capacity of the machine. Ride safe Sir.

Thank you for your insight Michael, it's a wonderful subject to learn for hobby purposes, and like you say, the world of motorcycles benefits so much from the ability to turn parts at home.

I wonder what would happen if you got rid of the flex on the standard clipons. They seem to have a lot of movement. Probably end up with really buzzy bars, although the bar weights should get rid of most. Great video Del, your look well. That's good to see.

5 hours? Wow, well done. I haven’t used a lathe in years. But back when I did I think that would have taken me a couple days to get right. They look great, but won’t they end up being very buzzy with no damper at all? I would probably have put a rubber washer/spacer between them and the bars just as a dampener. But I have not ever working on that type of bike, so maybe its not an issue. Great video.

need a bit of advice if possible. I'm getting on and ride a 2001 Yamaha r1 with clip on handlebars. Is it possible and more importantly safe to drill the top yolk to put risers on to have a more upright riding position or do I have to go down the rather expensive purpose made top yolk to achieve this. would appreciate your advice thanks
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob.. i would have to see the yoke underneath to make sure it has enough thickness of metal to drill and hold the bar clamps securely.. i haven't looked under one before so not sure.. as long as the part you plan to drill through has the full thickness of the rest of the yoke, and enough area so the holes have the thickness of the bolt all around them... then that could be ok... but you'd have to check to be sure mate.. Good luck with it and i hope it works out ok..

Hi Del, good call on getting the play out of the bars, the Busa is the favorite of all the 50 odd bikes I have owned. It was the first bike where I noticed the effect of positive counter steering, they do like a good shove on the bars to get them down and through the corners. I would love to see you do a full nuts and bolts refurbish back to standard on a gen one Busa. With the care you lavished on the Triumph it would be a good watch.

Thanks Alex.. sadly i have no plans for a restoration on this bike.. it's way past the point of no return.. but it's totally mechanically sound, and will make a killer street fighter...it's gonna be a right street weapon. however the next proper project will be another build like the Legend, a "Resto-mod" makeover to create a really great looking, one of a kind bike at the end.. just got to source the donor bike and they're really rare..!

Hi there.. Often the forks are reluctant to "self centre" just by plunging as i showed.. so in those cases.. with the help of a friend, do it again, but this time, stand in front of the bike with the wheel between your legs, and force the bars straight.. then get your helper to tighten the bolts in sequence while you hold it still.. and don't forget to check the rear wheel alignment too because if that;s out it can make the frotn feel out too..!

@@Moonfleet41 Thankyou so much,is there is any chance the front mudguard and its bracket can change the alignment of fork bottoms while tightening the Mudguard bolts?the forks and front end appear all aligned at standstill,its when I ride the bike,the forks appear to be tweaked towards the left side

@@Anonymous-pb9yb No, not likely, it's soft plastic and shouldn't pull your forks about... check also that your handlebar clamps are aligned in the top yoke as they have flex in them too...

@@Moonfleet41 You're God,I just fixed it today,the clamps were not aligned ,they were loose and now the handle is completely perpendicular to the forks,And I liked what you said in your recent video,Learn to improve,God bless .
