I’m glad you covered the high bar squat for tall guys. I’m 6’1” and lean and still learning the mechanics of weighted squats. I can’t seem to get anywhere near 90* under load yet but can ATG with body weight. Working on mobility everyday to get the range of motion in my tibs.

That's awesome and same. It's a constant work in progress here, too. I love when some of these super mobile or shorter barefoot shoe folks are like, it's easy to squat ATG...then taller and stiffer athletes are like uhhh.... I have the stiffest ankles from playing ice hockey, lol.

I went full hardo a couple of months ago and actually found it comfortable and beneficial. I.e. Train in vivobarefoot primus lite 3, walk in Topo Magnifly 5, trail run and run in Altra Via Olympus 2 and Topo Pursuit 2. Don't really have many professional attire occasions at the moment, but will probably look into some wide toebox options when necessary. I'd say if you have the resources, then definitely give them a try.

@@zhuochen8092 Ayy, good stuff. Also, hardo here is defined as only thinking “barefoot shoes” are the way. I’m all for folks rotating and figuring out what they like. Just can’t deal with these dogmatic barefoot shoe influencers. Stuff is so cringe, lol

I wear all of my barefoot shoes(primarily all of my different style Vivobarefoot shoes) with STRYDA low profile barefoot all cork insoles that just released last month in June 2024. I own 6 pairs of that specific insole. I recommend these insoles to anyone thats having a hard time adjusting to barefoot shoes of any kind. I am now reaching new levels in my training with no injuries, or any mobility issues whatsoever.(that wasn’t always the case)

Ay, these are great tips! I'm curious, Allan, and this is NOT me trying to discredit your experiences, but when you made the shift, did you also start paying more attention to mobility/your training methodologies? What I've observed from coaching clients is that a lot of times the language around the full-time barefoot shoe shift for health-focused reasons often gets taken to an extreme because lifters "feel" better when making the shift, but what they forget is that they also improved their consciousness of their training/mobility/stability in general when making the shift. Thus, providing a better experience which then gets blanketed onto barefoot shoes, when in reality, it's likely a culmination of factors. I have no doubt barefoot shoes contributed to you feeling better, however, I'd also objectively look at other changes you made in addition to your footwear shift. I do this all of the time with my own training, btw. Something works really well and everything improves, then I assume it's that one thing when in reality it's a blend of stuff. I try to always check my language to avoid creating a bias and making others think it was only "one" thing that improved quality of life/training/etc. Curious for your thoughts. This is also a topic I want to film a video on in the future!

@@thatfitfriend yes you’re right. Removing foam based shoes and foam insoles from all of my daily wears, was actually the most important factor when it comes to what lead to me making significant improvements in my training.(along with wearing toe spacers when I train) I used to wear the discontinued “Altra HiiT XT2” for training with the Birkenstock Birko Contact foam insoles. I thought that was my perfect setup, until one day I I tried on a pair of crocs 360 literide pacer sneakers(narrow toe box) and my toe splay alignment went to 💩. It took weeks for me to finally start feeling right again. The most important factor that lead to me finally being able to recover was removing any shoe or insole with any kind of foam from rotation and starting to use toe spacers while training. I now stretch and do yoga/ animal movement exercises with the Vivobarefoot Motus Flex(no insoles at all, and wearing toe spacers). For my hardcore explosive plyometric and speed training I strictly use the Vivobarefoot Hydra ESC, paired with the STRYDA barefoot all cork insoles.(while wearing toe spacers) I actually pair those insoles with the all cork Vivobarefoot all cork insoles that come with the premium leather Gobi sneakers. I place them directly on top of my STRYDA cork insoles.(I bought two pairs of premium leather sneakers just for the all cork insoles they come with. You’re right about it not just being just “one factor”. This works perfectly for me. I use the “feeling” based method for all my footwear decisions. I now have an averse reaction to any shoe containing any kind of foam, and immediately remove any foam insole they come with.

Lems, not any of their grip models, work as great transition shoes imo. They don't have all the cushion or near the arch swell of something like Altra. And Birkenstocks are great for recovery when your arches start to get tired. At least that is my opinion. As an aside, barefoot shoe sizing is wonky as all get out. At least if you have a 4E foot! Anyway, great video as always. Thank you!

The Lems TrailHeads have a 4mm drop. So that's even better for people used to higher heel drops.

I am one of the many who has been wearing walking/running shoes for years or decades. Heel drops around 12mm. For me to go right to flat barefoot shoes would be insane. So I found a few transitions shoes that have heel drops in the middle range. Wide Vans Old Schools and Lems Trailheads both have 4mm drop. Within about a month, my ankles adapted to the Vans, but my calves and achilles are still no one close to going any lower. I wear the Vans just around the house or to places where I won't be walking much, like out to eat.
