Ha, thanks, Anni! Another good looking shoe, I love hemp. I need to clone myself, so I can test and review more house. Water doesn't seem to come in the bottom of Wildlings, because there's an extra layer above the split, but it will come in through the upper fabric. That said, they have new "Resoled" styles with no split and a higher wrap that would be a bit more effective. bit.ly/4atJLma The Tann Resoled is top on my list to try.

What's really nice is they're so easy to wash! I can just scrub them by hand in the sink with a little Dr. Bronners, get all the soap out, leave them to dry in the sun. Then there's no gunk inside or outside, and the hemp canvas is nice and stiff again 👍

Haven't tried them, but have looked at them before and they seem like a solid option with vented sides, medium 5mm sole, and a decently wide toebox, as far as I can tell. You should try/review Saguaro, they're actually a pretty decent budget BF shoe, got my self a pair and surprised with how good/durable they are.

Yea, I've considered them, but I do have concerns. For one, like Whittin, they've directly ripped off the Vibram V-Trek's style, which bothers me, but more importantly when I see shoes selling for $40 that tells me that everyone else in the brand's supply chain is getting screwed over in order for them to charge that little, especially the workers in the factory. For a budget option, Lono kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZK5ZXmaeq6cmtk, Xero kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqWah6ZjZ8aKgrs, and Freet kzbin.info/www/bejne/inOtlp-fjZytf80 at least make a solid effort to use sustainable/ethical practices and materials without charging a ton.

@@AndrewFolts hmm yeah interesting point, but also assumptive as I doubt some of the other companies charging exorbitant prices are squeaky clean when it comes to ethics and business practices. Perhaps it's what the BF industry needs to bring down the exorbitant pricing of brands like Vivo price capitalising on the lack of decent competition. I personally can't afford them so had to find an alternative, here in Australia there was virtually no other options. Hopefully as BF shoes become more common and more brands pop up, the pricing becomes more reasonable. Thanks for the info 🤙🏽

@@gibbethoskins8621 Yea, like I said, Lono, Freet, etc, aren't perfect, but are at least making a solid effort. For $40 you 100% know everyone in Saguaro's supply chain is getting extorted, because it wouldn't be possible to deliver them at that price any other way. Vivo charges what they charge because they're simply the best in every way. They're, durable, flexible, well designed (although some models look dumb/Nike-sih, imo), and made with premium materials at a higher ethical standard than pretty much any brand, except maybe Wildling. They can't magically do all that for bargain prices. I totally feel you, though-it's frustrating that sustainability is expensive. The whole thing comes down the the richest 1% controlling more wealth than the 99%. Realistically, Vivobarefoot is a gnat on the radar compared to tycoons like Bill Gates.

Do you recommend other brands that has gone the same route as Lems Primal collection, Softstar Primal collection, Fivefingers and Realfoot? That almost clown shoe-like shape for full toe freedom? I have wide feet so other brands than mentioned above, i have to go up a size to the point it gets way too long, but it's the sacrifice i have to make. And Vivo's styling are so damn cool it's hard to pass up.

As someone with medium feet I find that shape to be overkill. If your feet fan out quite a bit, then they certainly would be more comfortable. If you feet are just wide, not extra-wide, then Vivo might work, but def check the sizing templates to see. FiveFingers actually don't look that wide, they just stretch out to whatever shape your toes have.

Hi Andrew, which shoe would you recommend for long city tours walking? I used a vivo magna leather and my feet killed me in a 4 days tour in London ( could hardly walk after the second day, in the fourth I was almost crawling 😅) but this was last year, now I'm more advanced with barefoot

@@User-Tal1951 Between the Lite and AW it's just about how much you need water resistance. My original Primus Lite's were 3mm like the Sensus (no insole) and I wore them for both working 8+ hours on concrete as a shoe salesman and running on roads. As long as you use a smooth stride, there's no need for padding, as your foot will come down softly. As with any new shoe, it's a good idea to work it in gradually so your feet can adjust and strengthen.

I checked your videos above about the Primus and Sensus, they do look more comfortable, but I didn't like theire look 😄. That's why, I am thinking more about the lite or AW( hope they can handle a possible new challenge in the future.

I've had 3 pairs of Xero's shoes and never again. The Toe box is NOT wide. They have somehting like 4-5mm less than the Vivo's. I've measured them trust me. I still have a pair to sell here if someone is from Canada

Andrew, what do you think about barefoot shoes for those who have flat arches/flat feet? Is it true, in your opinion, that people with flat arches actually need/benefit from cushioning/support in their shoes, or is this yet another misconceptions (like the one which says that we, in general, even those without any foot conditions, *need* support/cushioning in our shoes)? Btw, am I wrong using terms "cushioning" and "support" interchangeably? Thank you in advance.

Barefoot shoes are great for flat feet! I had borderline flat arches back in 2017 and, without a doubt, cushion and arch supports made it worse, because my feet just became weaker and more exhausted from trying to keep steady on squishy foam. When I transitioned to barefoot shoes, my arches raised and became much stronger, to the point where they're now medium height. Also, yes, cushion and support are different. Cushion is just padding. Support usually usually means more firm devices, like inserts and dense stability foam, which are meant to "prop up" a weak foot/ankle.

@@MaximC What I'd do is just wear barefoot shoes for as long each day as you can without any significant discomfort, then go back to your normal shoes for the rest. Each day just gradually spend more time in barefoot shoes as it feels right.

Nope, in fact some people run ultra's completely barefoot, although you need a lot more callus for that. I've found that I can run much longer in barefoot shoes than in cushion with less fatigue, especially with FiveFingers shoes.

I don't feel like I know the perfect diet, although what I'm eating right now is mainly organic/free-range bison/elk, wild caught salmon, lettuce/spinach, alkaline fruits (kiwi, pear, papaya, avocado, lemon, coconut), veggie juice (celery, fennel, ginger, lime), soaked/sprouted nuts, seeds, legumes, and pseudo-grains (quinoa, lentils, buckwheat, cashews, walnuts, pepitas, pecans). Actually I'm looking at my KSO ECO's right now and the second toe is exactly the same length as the big toe, plus the toe rubber is flexible and kind of folds down to accommodate longer toes, so it might work for you. My second toe is also longer than normal.

I wish the term "vegan mesh upper" or just any "vegan" description was a clearer. I would prefer to know if I'm getting something that's mostly plastic or something with some meaningful biodegradable potential. If it's mostly cotton, hemp, etc, I'd be more interested. If the shoe is almost entirely plastic or if it's some ambiguous greenwashed thing (ex. Lono says they use "biodegradable polyester" without publishing proper reference documents or having third party certifications), then I'd probably pause and think harder about that purchase.

Vegan leather is always plastic. But I 100% agree with you. I feel like companies use the term vegan is to give the illusion that the material is good for the environment when it's most likely non recycled plastic. And if it is recycled they are pretty good about mentioning that usually

The reality of the internet is that you have to use the terms people are searching for, or you'll never get found, but yea, more transparency is always a good thing when it comes to materials.

Sometimes, but not necessarily. For example, synthetic can be made into a finer mesh for hot weather without sacrificing durability. You can't make a thin durable mesh with leather.

@@AndrewFolts The thing is: synthetic is cheap. You get the same kind of mesh, from the same materials and the same quality, made in the same factories from some China brand as well as Vivo Barefoot. One costs a third of the price. I am not saying that certain materials are not functionally useful, they definitely are, but some materials are just... cheap, sold at a premium. I am not a fan of synthetic materials because of the turnaround. These shoes are done after 1-2 years. A bit like fast fashion. They produce a huge amount of waste and I try to buy products with turnaround, made from materials, that will not clog up my son's and his children's children arteries for the next 300 years. The whole "vegan" thing makes me angry, because people pretend that this is the "better for the planet and morals" option, while it objectively is easily as hurtful to animals as leather, just indirectly and for decades, centuries to come. If "vegan upper" would mean: made from high quality cotton, made from hemp etc. (there are dozens of plant fibers, that are incredibly durable, functional and bio degradable), then I would nothing but applaud "vegan alternatives" to leather/wool. Vegan is supposed to be the "moral option" (and I really would love for it to be that). To be that, it needs to be cradle2cradle. It cannot damage maybe even more living creatures, than actually killing them for leather. Otherwise, it's a cheap scam, branded to play on the emotions of customers. Then you add the "nicely branded" "membrane" for water resistance.... PTFE coated cotton or synthetic fibre. A forever chemical. It's incredible bad for the environment, animals and every human on this planet, for hundreds if not thousands of years. Especially vegan options have those in them. Why not use oilskin? Made from carnauba wax or some other non animal alternative wax and linseed oil, mineral oil (i get that's not a great option, but still). If those brands would really care about the environment, as their green washing branding wants us to believe, they would look for viable alternatives to some of the worst materials known to men. (A good company in that regard is Mukishoes, that you also reviewed, the are actively looking for REALLY sustainable alternatives)

@@W4ldgeist I totally agree with you that natural fabrics are preferable and much healthier for the planet, but you can't expect to change everyone's behavior with one video. Furthermore, the barefoot products/brands that check all the boxes of 100% sustainable, natural, ethical, durable, breathable, etc, are so few that it would be financially impossible for me to only make reviews about them, currently. My goal is to draw people in through a variety of options that are still orders of magnitude better than the ultra cushioned marshmallow "trash in 300 miles" shoes that the majority of the population wears, so that we can all move in a better direction. Finally, it's not that case that synthetic shoes fall apart any faster than natural fabrics. My original Vivo Primus Lite's (all synthetic) are still going after 7+ years. How you treat your shoes is a big part of it.

No brand could manufacture high quality shoes for $25. Consider the materials, manufacturing, shipping, marketing, payroll, healthcare, rent, etc, etc, etc. That would be a charity, not a business, ha.

I was NOT happy with splay, they are way too expensive for shoes that didn't even last a week before getting a tear, and started completely falling apart at less than 3 months. Awful shoes period, but for how much they cost they're a borderline scam.

Did you buy them recently? I've heard at least five complains within the past couple months and apparently the new version is not as good as the original ones I have.
