As an Aussie couple in tropical Queensland we faced the same dilemma as many others getting the right balance between our aspirations matched with an appropriate choice of catamaran. We have a HH50 being delivered in the first half of next year and we didn’t choose it because it could fly a hull…though one day with a crack crew we might give it a go ! But more because that tells us it is strong. And equally importantly in soft tropical winds we can sail at good speeds and NO engines ! We love the craftsmanship and finish. But equally important all the stuff you can’t see…plumbing, beautifully labelled and run cables, separate AC and DC tech spaces…inside very hatch is a well finished space. Easier to maintain…. I could go on and on why we reckon it suits us but that will bore your readers ! Long legs and beautiful. The yacht that is !

Neat boat. Great tour. Thanks. It's exciting to know that there are cats that can sail with a hull in the air - without flipping (Maybe they have a list of all the people who've done this or will be able to soon do this, and those are the only people who can tour the boat. They wouldn't even tell me how to get an appointment.) The hulls seem a little wide for a performance cat. (The beam is two feet tighter than similar performance cats. I always wondered if Gunboats were the width they were because of narrow gap between those two sheds in La Grand Motte.) I was wondering about its light wind and passage performance. Thanks for answering that question! (I would've otherwise guessed it'd be similar to a Leopard.) It is super light, for its size 2t lighter than similar length performance cats. The hull windows are spectacular. Brilliant design.

Thanks for pointing out the flying hull on performance catamarans, other KZbinrs didn't take that into account. I am very curious if a certain couple who started sailing 6 years ago and recently bought the HH44 are aware of this.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Жыл бұрын
Interesting question - I am sure they will but if you don't want to fly a hull, you just keep the boat more conservatively rigged. There was an OUtremer that capsized recently which is the risk in the lighter hulled boats...
@TheSailingFamily Жыл бұрын
Every catamaran will either fly a hull or break a mast/daggerboard/rudder. When you really (REALLY) push your boat, do you want the rig to come crashing down on you or do you want it built strong enough to not break? That's what HH builds.
@kirkb34733 жыл бұрын
Another fantastic boat that’s hard to find something wrong with. This is one man’s opinion but I think one of the strengths of the boat (it’s enormous open cockpit that flows to the saloon) is also its weak point. To me we stood on this boat and that one long bench seating and table reminded me of a church pew. When would a couple cruising ever actually use this space? Also who wants to be seated looking the wrong direction towards the helm station? You don’t…you want to be looking out over the stern at that beautiful anchorage you are in. Stunningly fantastic boat, but this is where it lost its appeal for me, as for how a couple would actually use the boat.

Welcome to sailing then Psy! You will only fly a hull when the wind is coming Friday m the side (to create the lift) and then of course I is not far or hard to go a little further by accident and cap size…. To do it you need to know what you are doing and have good crew on board and everyone be alert - no beers and cigs out yet back! So for us it is not the way we want to sail with that much stress / excitement!!!
@calvingarrett32453 жыл бұрын
Hello both of you good to see you're out boat shopping kind of like window shopping. I'm sure they can build that boat with no fly hull if you wanted it like that. And I would be worried about capsizing to myself. I don't know anything about boats just what I hear and see on KZbin one day I would like to learn before I'm too old but I would have to learn on a smaller boat before I would purchase a cat or a tri hull. Some of us are not fortunate like most to be able to have a decent boat even a starter boat wish me luck. Both of you take care and be safe God bless you wish you well on finding the right boat watching from Roseville California USA Ray Garrett
@barefootdoctorssailing85673 жыл бұрын
Hey Ray, If there is boat club nearby you can learn how to "sail" on dinghies and that way you will understand the way to set the sails and how to beat upwind, tack, and sail downwind and then when you Get onto a cruising boat, you sail it immediately and then the new techniques are the manouvring under engine, into marinas and dropping the anchor which is relatively easy! So don't delay, get out and sail on anything and you can do it.... Even sailing a windsurfer will teach you how to sail but that is more complex that sailing a boat as you use the lean of the mast to change direction. Hope to see you out there one day! Eli and John

I sure know you’re aware about catamarans triangle. So, if you want performance, comfort and price I think you should run to a monohull!
@barefootdoctorssailing85673 жыл бұрын
Well, monohulls are also always a compromise too (racing vs cruisers/ long keel, flat bottomed, lifting keels etc) and unless you go 60 foot or so, getting regular speeds over 15 knots would be rare so performance is always a relative term. Again depends on what you want and where you want to sail as monos are better in certain situations - "you pay your money and you make your choice"!

Oh my! Speed and weight are very important but this boat would literally scare me 😳 She’s so light and so fast that I’m afraid I would be sailing with the anchor dragging behind me to slow her down! The high speeds are a _potential_ performance aspect of the yacht. Prospective owners don't have to sail at maximum capabilities all the time. Or are they more into a comfortable ride and a gentler but slower lifestyle? Your tour of the HH seems to hint that you are looking for some performance but you seem to really appreciate the comfortable lifestyle. No wonder buying a new boat is so darn hard. lol As long as you keep on making videos of your search its all good. We are enjoying the journey.

Hi Ed, thanks for the comment and we are looking for ourselves but we are not wanting to go really fast unless it is comfortable and easy. We are likely to review some cats/tris that are heading towards the extreme (wet and hard work) that we will not go for but if we do not see them, we will not know and we hope that giving the tours gives everyone a better idea of the pros and cons of each boat. As we have said, each person puts their priorities differently and that is why there are so boat out there and we are now really having to look at how important different features are for us as boats seem to be good in one area but you lose something else - that compromise that always bang on about!!! I would not see us in a Rapido but I would still love to get on board one and have a good look and even sail on one as it would be thrilling ride for a day... I think that for 3000 mile crossing, I may prefer the slower easier sail - but having not sailed on one, I will not prejudge. Regards, John

At the end of the day it all comes down to your understanding of the term "show" cause if a show is just "showing" what you do, then it is a show - but if a show is a performance that you "put on" and then end when the camera stops, it is not a show... This is a performance cruising catamaran and is designed to travel at speeds over 20knots. To do achieve this, the boat needs a narrow hull and must be light.
