FINALLY, we are able to reveal the CAUSE OF THE FIRE that destroyed out new Leopard 50 catamaran in August 2021!!! We also explain the reasons for the long delays to get through all the legal wrangling and there is advice for all yachties that could save your boat from the same outcome.....
We have footage of the actual event and injured individuals being wheeled away and the footage of the wrecked boats being removed from the site...
Our Patreon option starts from only $3 per week, and will allow our supporters to enjoy live updates, join us for sailing events in Aegean Greece, May 2024. Then in Dubai Jan 2025 (aboard the new Portofino 52) join us for the launching party and test sails!!! We are also offering boat build tours with sailing off Dubai to share the progress of the P52 build and provide whatever sailing or life discussions that YOU want us to provide during all of these events..... It is a very exciting prospect and we have been requested repeatedly to give advice, take folk sailing, teach sailing techniques etc etc.... So here it is!!!
Any Patreons will have the choice to join us for these events which are usually about 5 days to be up close and personal with Eli and John and learn from their expertise... There will be sailing trips, excursions and chats during the events and the subjects will be designed to suit the participants that will be there. Patreons will receive all the sailing and talks with the Barefoot Doctors without any cost but will only have to cover their own travel, food and accomodation costs.
All Patreon proceeds go to Exqisit Life Foundation to support TUFMINDS Mental Resilience and Suicide Prevention Program worldwide.
Some come Barefoot with us on this exciting journey - now physically and in person with Patreon if you wish!!!
Binge watch and come barefoot with us as we travel and explore the planet, mostly from the water but sometimes through the minds of others as we provide aid and support where needed through the amazing TUFMINDS solutions!

So happy this has finally been resolved. You lost your beautiful dream home. I know about rags and acetone, solvents, fumes that settle, flammability, etc, etc... And yet! on my boat is a liter of acetone. I'll drive up and get it off. Kind of foolish of me. I even just checked on the can two days ago. Now when I do get it off my boat with no bad result I've also learned that 'no bad outcome' doesn't mean 'It was okay,' 'it was safe,' or I should keep doing it. It's a lesson I used to teach my students. I also need to make sure I have the right information. What else might I have missed....? I'm happy no one died, it all got sorted and I think all of us who are your fans are especially happy that you're building an even more amazing new boat.

When you were inching the cork off the campagna bottle, I had to pause the video before the bubbly burst, so I could go get a beer and celebrate at the same time as you did because by then I knew you would be going into details from episode title. I knew it was over.. Glad it was settled and finalized. I stopped asking about your insurance because I had a hunch you were limited on what you could say or couldn't. I always hoped one day it would be settled in a favorable way and you would give us the good news and some details. Today was that day. I may have mentioned in my earlier inquiries about my war with insurance companies over an accident that took place at my place of business and it also involved a fire and a night security guard that got injured. I also was woken up by at 3:AM by a phone call. All incidents such as your where property is damaged or lost and individuals hurt, and an insurance company is involved....could be a nightmare. I am very happy that it is done and over with. Looking forward to the next chapter with the new boat.

I am currently working towards a similar dream, and whilst doing that, am also watching many sailors to learn from troubles, issues, and challenges that they experience(d) and how they, including yourselves, have over-come these successfully. One of my very old bosses once said to me... learn to rob with your Hands in your Pockets, be observant, watch and evaluate, then apply. Congratulations on finally having some closure on this situation. Everyone is going through something. The deeper the 💩💩💩 the harder you swim. I am going through a personal hell right now, I refuse to let other people's choices bring me down, and every day has been a struggle of late, I will get there, I will succeed, and I will come out of this stronger. I have a list of Pros on my fridge door, no cons, I won't allow any negatives to have a voice. There is nothing I can do to change 2 major hurdles in my situation, I do have the choice of how I cope. Even though the smile on my face is fake, the smiles I receive back are real.

Thanks for sharing-l fully appreciate your decision to go low key in dealing with this problematic situation. I did the same-In December 2019 l did not have a fire but same experience as my boat was knocked over on the hard stand by the boat next to me that was not tied down probably. It took 4 months with insurance claims and 18 months 12:06 for a total rebuild from top of the mast to the bottom of the keel, striping the mast newrebuilding and repair dented aluminium hull and all it in tailed-plus my management of all the services and trades. Just because the slip management team did not inspect the tie downs on the boat next to me! Now my boat is as good as new! SV Skoiern IV all of this could have been avoided but for one mistake.

Some things to consider prior to engaging a head contractor in the future to manage the works on your yacht. 1- Have they a Safety Management System 2- Can they demonstrate how it is implemented 3 - in respect to the works that were undertaken by both contractors did they have documented Safe Work Method Statements and prior to starting work had they completed a Job Safety Analysis ( risk assessment) 4 - Did the contractor who was using the acetone have the Safety Data Sheet available which would highlight the risks also of using the product. 5 - The Head Contractor is responsible for coordinating works so that they don’t create additional risk .

I remember watching that boat burn and have wondered what on Earth could have happened. Thanks for the ending of this story. I was in a building on a Saturday working and a worker was stripping war from a floor in the basement. He was using a circular hand held buffer that is used to wax a floor. But he was on that day using Acetone to cut the old wax. The buffer had gotten the old wax and acetone on his pants and at some point it ignited. The poor man was life-flighted to a hospital but later died. So, yes, acetone is a very dangerous chemical and should only be used in open spaces that are well ventilated. So glad you guys came out of this justified. God bless.

in 1992, an electric fire severely damaged our 52 foot motor boat... I learned, through various sources, that the insurance company had hired a private detective agency to check on us. We did receive compensation for the damage, and over the many years since, I can certainly appreciate the insurance company's investigations, as it is almost impossible to determine the true cause of some fires on boats.

To think this was caused by negligence through such poor workmanship, that acetone was allowed to seep into the bilge is beyond belief. Thank goodness no one was killed. The environmental damage in this fire was huge.

I never had any doubts about your innocence from the onset. I felt the loss that must have consumed you both. You two have been so forthcoming and generous throughout your videos and I, like so many others were always wishing you well from the sidelines. It saddens me that you are defending yourselves even now and that only makes the hardship that much worse. Very glad to see the two of you landed on your feet. There's a pun in there somewhere, but suffice to say that I/We take comfort in this outcome.

A valuable lesson for us ALL. In the construction/renovation industry for over 50 years, the first time I've heard that acetone was heavier than air. How about that for teaching an old dog... Propane (LPG) has similar properties hence the reason propane fueled cars are not allowed in underground parking garages.

Thank you for that wonderful video well that's why you have to be so careful with flammables in side of a boat. Most people don't realize how important it is to air your bilges out before you start your engines especially if it's a gasoline engine. That's why it's really important to have good bilge fans in the bilge. When you step on your boat first thing you do is flip on your fans second thing you do is you open up the hatch to your engine Bays 10 minutes a good 10 minutes of that start your engines then you can close your Bays and turn off your fans. Because it's enclosed spaces you're just asking for problems if there's any chemicals down there gasoline especially or other types of combustible accelerates. The other thing it's really important that I have on my boat is a fire system with two fire extinguishers on either side of my bilge that if a fire happens and these things will go off automatically and dump enough extinguisher into the bilge to put out any type of fire

Spontanious combustion. I was working with a friend on his house. He left staining rags in a plastic garbage can. We all got a call late that night the beautiful Victorian house we were nearly finished was a blaze. Horrible sight. Interesting that they found the cause of the fire and highlights many aspects of both the build and what buyers carry or store on there boat, Do we need more thought on fire prevention from the build upwards to the parts fitted to stop these fires taking hold so fast , Chemicals in simple things like a dropped ladys nail varnish remover smashed on the floor then leaking into the bilges ( its base is the same as what caused your fire ) degreasers/twp pack paints/thinners all carried in the spare s department Fire prevention has to start with the builders to stop raging fires and heavy smoke , nice to see you went for an alloy boat good thinking and glad everyone is alive and safe.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comments Misha! We will be doing a dedicated fire prevention episode at some stage to cover al later aspects that we have learnt over the years and specifically after this fire... We do consider that the builders could add fire retardants into the resin but it seems that the increased cost makes them think that they lose market share and only if the public demand those things will the "usual" production boats change. Rescue boats and planes use non burning resins so it is POSSIBLE but the "people" need to be demanding it and paying a slight premium....

Acetone does not spontaneous combust like polymerizing oils. It does have a very low flash point, the point at which it form vapor, -17c. The vapors are highly flammable and can travel along surfaces to an ignition point as you have shown. However, acetone soaked rags will not combust without a source of ignition.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 4 ай бұрын
Thanks Greg for that info but I have been told of first hand stories of paint shops that had rags with acetone spontaneously ignite on several occasions but have not tested it myself. Several of those stories are in the comments here and other videos of our channel. Whether it does or does not, we all agree that you need to be really careful with acetone and keep it in open, well ventilated spaces....

I have to say, I have been around boats my whole life (we cruised for two years on our sailboat) and I would have never thought of something like that happening (although it makes perfect sense in retrospect). Two harmless activities that when performed alone are fine, but when performed together, were not fine. That was some really bad luck, but overall, very lucky that no one was seriously injured. And, yeah, once a fire gets going on a fiberglass boat, all the fire department is usually able to do, is save the keel!

My Hunter is 34 feet long, and I carry four fire extinguishers, and my smoke detector has a 10 year battery. Acetone is often used to clean up from epoxy. Don't use it. Distilled vinegar dissolves non-hardened epoxy. Much better for your skin, too, than acetone. I used gallons of it, building my catamarans.
