Sparring no-contact bare-knuckle is a little silly but sometimes we still do it at my gym just to warm up for light contact rounds. The purpose is to get everyone in the groove of going real 'easy' and technical in the following rounds with equipment on. My coach says it's something Thais sometimes do. It's so much easier to parry without gloves on and the guard game completely changes without big cushions to protect you. My previous karate training makes a lot more sense when we're sparring like this, but it being no or very light contact means we dont really pressure test it so I'll never know.

there was a really prolific underground bare-knuckle fighter (Bobby Gunn, if i remember right) and he said in a magazine interview I read that opponents were focusing on trying to get him to hit their foreheads since another hand-break would end his career, and they wanted him out of the game.

I like that you also explain how to counter techniques that you are explaining how to use, as soon as i saw how to break that how i pictured a spinning elbow or backfist as a follow up. Knowing how to counter your own techniques is so important because you can make instant adjustments in case the opponent knows how to counter your technique.

Hey Mike, I recently moved state and decided to try out Krav Maga at a reputable gym that works with the Australian Defence Force after having done MMA for 3-4 years. RE the blocking with your head, my head coach mentioned using palm strikes to the head and fist strikes to softer parts of the body to avoid breaking your hand - It was new info to me so thought I’d share. I love the content mate 🔥 Keep it coming EDIT: Not sure if this is allowed in bare knuckle boxing rules, and also there’s the obvious draw back of losing range due to hitting with your palm instead of your full reach.

had anyone thought about shin gaurds/ metal shingaurds for self defense? kicks would be viable and possibly break bones. they can be warn under pants so no one can see them, and not only will it hurt more cause there's a hard surface hitting them, you can throw your kicks much harder, maybe as hard as you possibly can, cause there padding underneath

@@grapeleopard6809 true, i keep forgetting people cant just kick someone, especially in a fight lol. but it could help with confidence also, just knowing your legs will, for the most part, be fine. Mike, have you ever made a full video in parrying? Also blocking: I spar with bigger dudes often and I find blocking hooks to be most unrealistic part of boxing. It’s better than nothing to get you mitt in there, but some guy with 100kg and force smacks you with a good hook, I feel you’re still taking most of the blow anyway. ”In dah streetz” it’d be useless, so using elbows instead makes a lot more sense, or even better, slip, duck and roll. I love boxing, but I always have self defence in the back of my mind and some stuff in boxing (like any other MA/combat sport, pugilism being one of the best though) feels just dumb, especially blocking hooks.

Gotta 'doff my cap' in your general direction sir, nothing you said that I would disagree with and much you said that I applaud. Here's a contentious statement, if you've seen old paintings of bare-knuckle prize fighters from the 1700/1800's, the classic pose had them with elbows down and knuckles down, a total reversal of modern boxing with gloves. I think there is a very good reason to fight like this if you have reach and don't know how long the bout will last (some of them lasted for over 8 hours), probably the weakest point is the small bones of the hand (offensively), so you don't want to smash your hands early? Front teeth, philtrum, nose, throat, chin, sternum, ribs (particularly under a raised arm?) are all 'fast targets' that don't require huge effort and deal a lot of damage. A jab in modern gloved boxing can knock the opponents head back and set them up for the cross, whereas a good jab in a street-fight can be the end of things right there? I submit that there were very good reasons to fight 'elbows down' and they are as valid now as they were 300 years ago. There are purists who love boxing for it's skill and timing and no-nonsense approach, it takes years of dedication to become adept (as with martial arts in general) and one of the sad outcomes is that you can 'talk a good fight' if only your back wasn't so 'effed up! (yes, I am talking about me but hopefully this will pass). You move very well for an old guy! (from an older guy?) but you can't always depend on your footing in a bad situation, then the trapping and close work will be vital whiles't you break bones. God speed, respect and always, Pax vobiscum.

You can snatch someone down momentarily to make them think it's their idea to pick their head up. That works for striking or to help set up your next clinch or even shoot in grappling... but you shouldn't intentionally hold onto a bad collar tie, because you're just as much attached to them.

Whenever I research bare knuckle stuff it always starts to look closer and closer to traditional martial arts… when I studied traditional martial arts there was no end to the teasing and condescension from sport fighter types saying all the stuff Mike is talking about doesn’t work

I live in the south of England (large settlement, not Luton, ok it's Cambridge which is to be fair super variable and surprising), how does the way way more dramatic part of the USA you live in compare to for example the north of England?
