My big advice after 10+ years of ultra marathons (and Nick did a reasonable job of this here) is contrary to what you may think - YOU (the runner) are there to support your crew way more than they support you. They are constantly living on pins and needles (do we have the right stuff, how is he feeling? etc). You can get wrapped up in what you are doing but remember, YOU chose to be there and they are taking a day out of their life to help you. When you come into those pits you need to be smiling ear to ear baby! All positive. You could be bleeding out of every part of your body but it's all smiles. In fact, you are smiling when you ask them to take you to the hospital. If you need a cry you do that out on the course when you are all alone. When you come through the pits you don't complain, you don't get negative, you don't do any of that. You can tell your crew what you need or want etc. but you do it with a smile and you are loving life. They deserve that!!

This may be the worst advice I’ve ever seen. “Hey bud, I know I twisted the crap out of my ankle and it hurts to breathe, but boy oh boy do I not get to live in my moment because making you feel special is 10,000 times more important”. Don’t be stupid. You can celebrate and appreciate your team after the event. They understand what their role is. If they don’t, you’ve prepared poorly or they’re the wrong people.

My husband is my crew too... he often "adopts" the crewless runners I hook up with in the race, so that they can have support too. I've learned though, it's not his passion, it's mine, so I limit him crewing to the most difficult races, so I don't burn him out. Shout out to the supportive partners out there!

"An ultra for me is like this self intervention, and when I started the race, I was thinking about the end of the race. I was thinking about mile 80,99, 100. And it dawned on me, like what the fck I'm doing, why I am thinking hours from now, why I aren't focusing the mile I'm in. And I started to reflecting. Maybe I'm always looking at the next thing, I'm not able to actually enjoy and live and learn from the present. That's what I am taking away from these first 45 mile, it doesn't matter if it is a race if it's a milestone in life in business, with your friends, your family. Be present, enjoy the process because you are going to learn from that process and that experience, and don't always keep looking for the next thing. Be hyper focused where you are right now. " Nick Bare

Thinking ahead drives me crazy sometimes. Running and just focusing on breathing and putting one foot in front of the other is hard, but once you do it. It’s almost like my head is on a cloud. Nothing matters, as if I’m meditating. I don’t know how to meditate but this is my closest to attempting.

Great lessons, Nick! Yes to doing something that's a challenge, not something you know you can accomplish. At 51 I did my first 100mi on as little training as I could get away with due to having two small children and lots of chronic injuries. That was last year. This year, I did the rim-to-rim-to-rim of the Grand Canyon at 52 on the same chronically under-mileage training plan, but got it done. This spring trying for a good showing in my age group in a couple of half marathons. Still getting it done despite family obligations, work and a lifetime of pushing this old body. It's all about being in this moment and never resting on the laurels of previous accomplishments.

AWESOME VIDEO! Two key points... 1.) Are you HURT or are you INJURED? You have to know which one because you can always keep going if your hurt, but you need to know when your truly injured and stop. You were hurt when you twisted your ankle. 2.) You learn so much about yourself in the hardest moments in life; when times are tough and hard and your in pain! ITS ALL ABOUT THE LASST 50 MILES! You must have learned so much about yourself during all these long races. Mad respect!!!

When you spend you life challenging yourself it will payoff. At 52 fell alone in the woods 14 below zero out lightly dressed a 60 second walk to my running truck took several hour of crawling threw the woods. Injuries shattered hip shattered pelvis broke right shoulder 10 broke ribs severe hypothermia bruised lungs and femer. After laying under exhaust pipe to avoid freezing to death I mustered enough strength to climb in the truck and call 911. After 20 minutes or so I was found and medivaced to trauma unit. Was told you couldn't destroy you hip and pelvis any worst than I did, shattered I was literally pieced back together, didn't sleep for 2 years after fall due to misery. Point is I always took the hard road in life and it paid off 💯. My goal has been to run a sub 45 minute 5 k I know it's not shit to most but it's massive accomplishment for me. Go out people run a marathon do a triathlon take the hard road don't be so damn soft. Life is flying by if you have not noticed

As Rogan said on the Nims pc. It’s people like you, Goggins, Hanes, Nims… who truly inspire, because ur doing. Money where ur mouth is. Going to do my second Olympic triathlon in May. This one is a bit diff due to having a second kid/infant in the house again. The mentality to keep consistently choosing hard things, that’s what develops growth. Well said. Thanks.

You videos are so damn awe inspiring man it’s crazy, I’ve always been kind of a runner like hitting a 12 miler every week etc but this shit gets me pumped up to go hit some marathons this summer up here in Alaska.

Oh my god, I’ve been wondering if you would have that realization at some point, specially before the birth of your daughter, about the present. It’s all about balance! Kudos to you.

Another great video. You certainly have a good team behind you Nick. Keep crushing it. I was a track runner and am now running Ultras. Recently I have started lifting as well. This hybrid training has been inspired by your exploits. All the best.

This was on another level physically and a whole different level content wise! Thanks Nick for bringing us along the journey as you ventured through each mile of this race. This inspires and drives me to run this one day 🙌🏼 or to challenge myself physically that very few will do themselves.

This was amazing. Like a well written paper that had perfectly Illustrated images and footage to capture the moments. You feel like you are there with you. Learning a life lesson. Reflecting into our own thoughts and commitments. Learning what self reflection feels like in your eyes. A true masterpiece. Your film/editing crew is one of a kind and their creativity keeps getting better and better. Thanks for the inspiration!

Yeah I sprained my ankle yesterday trail running in Fairmont Park and it was everything I could do to come down out of the hills without crawling. I can't imagine running 70+ miles on it after.
