Hi Sam 'Black bogies' were / are a BR code for goods stock bogies up graded to be able to run at passenger train speeds, improved springs, brakes, grease boxes etc. Those 'black' warwells with decking were the type used on 'Motorrail' trains in the 1970s and early 80's. Motorrail was a service where you could drive to certain mainline stations, your car would be loaded onto the warwells via a special loading ramp. The passengers would then travel in normal coaches (Mk1 and 2's in blue / grey inter city livery) with the warwells with the cars on marshaled at the rear of the train. When you got to your destination you got out, retrieved yer car and drove away. These services were popular in the summer, serving tourist spots like Devon & Cornwall, The Lake Distict, The Scottish highlands etc. Maybe you could run a motorrail train at some point. Any more powerful BR diesel would be accurate, western, 40, peak, 47, 50. And blu-tack a couple of Oxford rail cars to the warwells then Robert would indeed be your mothers brother.

Another great review and testing of these Warwell's. I would recommend checking the back to back on all loco and wagon stock and re-gauge if necessary. To aid the wagon flow if the wheel sets are causing fraction, is to dab a droplet of oil onto the bearings. They are a better version of the model for detail (nice if chains supplied in detailing pack) and the variations Hatton's have made them in is very good too, so top marks for the options of livery etc.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын

Yes i do met/have issues with similar (cheap) points! And the Hornby ones with the huge plastic crossing part (specially on curved points) are prone to wear, making locos and rolling-stock derail. The wear of the "frog" and (specially) the "guard rails" is to blame. I wonder if these wagons would work with close-coupling?

Good evening Sam ! Thanks for your review of the Hattons Warwells. I have noted two important informations you gave me : 1) the Warwells are excellent wagons, you can buy some, it's a good deal 2) the 0-4-4 Wainwright H Class by Hornby is a lemon, don't buy. Thanks to warn me, I had it on my shoping list. Scrubbed right now, I have my dose of SR problem locomotives : the Oxford Rail Adams Radial, replacec by an Hornby, an old Q1 class with coupling rods problems (the fixation pins comes loose when running and the coupling rod falls away, I have planned to replace the wheels when I would find some), and the famous Hornby S15 with the temperemental motor... Seems SR locomotives and Hornby does not goes nice toghether... I don"t want to have a fourth problematic SR engine on my roster, three, that's enough for me. Well... One positive thing, I really loves those warwells. I will buy one or two as soon as possible.

Sam, those WarWells can carry 26 tons. It is printed on the sidebar. It would have been nice to see the platform removal and refitment. As far as the free-running goes, the Oxford Rail has been running before and the Hattons haven't, so a little unfair there. if they are Pin-Point Axles, then some running in is required. Maybe you can do a Retest at some later date. (They are Black on the underside.) Martin. Thailand.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Martin - I learned that once I watched the footage - they were too small to read! The platform removal wasn't pretty - and I notice they didn't sit quite right after I'd done it - probably not really recommended, but can be done as I say! I've never known wagon bearings to get looser with running in - in fact the opposite is true - when new, there's no debris to cause friction. After some running, the bearings can become dirty or worn causing them to run worse! The Oxford rolled just as far when I did the same test from new. Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Sam, you wonder what the weight restriction of the decks would be? It's actually readably printed on them :) Does anyone know if the prototype would work with both vacuum and air brakes? Because there seems to be a huge vertical vacuum cylinder and also an air tank underneath the cars.

Hi Sam, Nice to see the Hatton’s packaging is like a previous Prime Minister... strong and stable. Phew. It’s not like you to go out and spend money on Warwell’s. What we need is more wars, then we can have more drab war-time locomotives and drab war-time rolling stock. And with more wars we could weather the Warwell’s with some Humbrol “Dried Blood” or fun-time “Brains & Guts”. Yay. Numerous opportunities there then. Jim

They're fascinating wagons. Were they replaced by the 'Weltrol' wagon? I had a Triang one in the early 1970's, and that was a big ugly beast. I was happy simply to have my 08 Shunter push it around. Have you got any 'Nuclear Flask' wagons in your collection? At 14:59 there was noticeable hunting on the Oxford which I didn't like compared to the more solid coupling dynamics on the Hattens which I thought looked more realistic. I guess this is due to the lack of damping resulting from the Oxford's low friction running gear ? I know absolutely nothing about model railways so I apologise if the comment is fatuous!!!

I suppose this question works with rolling stock as well as locos, Which would you prefer? Amazing review overall and it’s nice to see that we’re getting positive again after what happened when you reviewed that horrible derailing Bachmann train set on Saturday I believe. Hi Sam Liam here. Lol when you dropped the box and gave that blank stare. I enjoy watching the warwells. I have an idea for a video. Get together all your best locos and rolling stock from each manufacturer like have the best Hornby loco with the best hornby rolling stock and so on and so on. Hope you consider this. Thanks Liam

Sucks living in the USA right now, I can't get anything because we are still in quarantine, and everything is still closed.
@kkobayashi14 жыл бұрын
USPS and Royal Mail are still operating. I bought several orders from Hattons and Rails of Sheffield last month. Shipping to the US takes longer than usual (one took almost 3 weeks) but they did eventually get here. I wouldn't buy from Hornby USA right now though, their customer support is non-functional.
@willausterman31044 жыл бұрын
Packages are still going through so online ordering is viable. I've gotten all six of my international packages at a decent speed except for my Devon Belle observation car. That one took a month! Trying to build the USA tour Flying Scotsman necessitates buying European models.

Tsk tsk Sam, what have I told you about shaking those boxes at the start, one day it’ll be a locomotive. Watching the derailments I may be wrong but it looked as if the coupling was hitting the rails at the point of derailing. Are they a bit too low or is the lifting arm too long. Other than that they are impressive models.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
haha you did indeed - finally messed it up! Even so - glad it was a hatton's product - I know those won't break! That's very interesting - I'll have to check that out! :O Thanks for watching - Sam :)

gauge is 16.5, you cant judge by the inside measurement as the wheels could be different thicknesses
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yes you're right actually - I didn't think of that - will try again! My measuring did reveal the inconsistency though - I collected quite a range of values from different axles! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Sam, the side label showing the colour scheme as "BR black" must be a labelling mistake. Even though the photo on the Hattons' site of the box says Black, their description clearly states Brown. I guess someone at Hattons didn't check the box labels.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yeah you're absolutely right - it was correct in the listing, just not on the box! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Fair play to you for leaving the drop in there Sam 😂. I got the same bundle a few weeks ago, it’s a good deal isn’t it! I might try and modify mine back to tank carrying ones, the deck is easy to remove.
