That was wonderful. I try manuever with you; guessing which engine, fwd or reverse, etc. Some extraneous talk. To your port there was a dark hull tanker moving. I thought it was going to sea. But in appeared to be docking. I did not see any assist tugs. Speaking of Cajun "talk" I worked the lower Mississippi. Grand Isle, Venice, Port Fourchon. The approx 9 months i was there, and i don't exaggerate, i always needed a crew member from the area to translate for me, the radio traffic, not the Cajun, but the accented english. 😮😅

Parallel parking is as much art as science, car or barge. Those last few feet (inches) are always tricky. 😀 Looking forward to more videos of the East and North rivers, Hellgate, and the Sound.

Interesting stuff with the assist tugs there, they've been operating in the are since 1956 or when the oil boom era from CORCO industry. My grandma spoke about seeing the big ships arrive to that bay in the 60's. Fair winds and following seas sir.

Future video Idea: When towing another vessel, often the tow sheers off to either side. Some vessels are docile and follow behind, others are just beasts. For example during a tow a while back the tow was almost at right angles abeam the towing vessel, the tow heeled way over under the strain of the towline and it just would not come back. Keeping such tow under short stay is the solution to maintaining control. Explain the hydrodynamics behind why this sheering off happens ie the differing flow of water over each side of the tow, interaction, etc.

Thanks for the great video. Question; what happens if is decided there's no avoiding a strong hurricane? Besides filling the barge, do you anchor in the best shelter available? Does anyone stay with the tug/barge, or do you evacuate the whole crew and pray? Thanks again.
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching Ralph. No, unfortunately we can not leave the tug or barge and as soon as the Coast Guard declares condition Yankee all commercial ships have to get out of all effected harbors. So last year when hurricane Ian (I think) came at Puerto Rico, we got underway and went 3/4s of the wat to Venezuela to avoid it. CUOTO

Captain Tim, You mentioned possible heavy weather preparations such as loading the barge and from your other videos you said you put out to sea so my question is where do the assist tugs go like the Don Oscar ? Do they try to anchor up somewhere or tie up to a dock or put out to sea also? Stay safe Captain Tim ! CUOTO
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching Dean. I believe they stay put in the protection of the harbor. That is not an option for use because of the barge (lite or loaded) as soon as the Coast Guard declares condition Yankee, we are forced out of the harbor. CUOTO
