It's great that you have started these Bargue instructional videos. I had copied the Bargue plates. It helped me a lot draw proportions and rendering.these videos are very helpful for beginners.

Thank you so much for this! I have tried a couple of Bargue drawings in the past and am working on a more intermediate one now, but I keep getting lost in just trying to "copy" vs. being intentional in what I am trying to get out of the process. Can't thank you enough for the extremely high quality content you consistently provide...

I am excited to discover you after I discovered Bargue about a week ago, Your language is so descriptive that my mind,listening to yours,concerning theevolution of forms in stages begins to develop concepts like bargue in bargue... I hope does not sound stupid... I even am not an english speaker.but someone in his 60si from a modest country who discovered drawing abaut two years ago ...and as my eyes open I start understanding hop depth of life canbe surprisingly reflected on a flat surface.For sure iti has to be a great play with meanngs going beyond the actual forms...wonderfull.Amazing!!

Thank you so much for this Bargue series, Stephen. I am currently doing an atelier-style training on my own (which I know is a bit of an oxymoron because you need a master:)) and your videos have been really helpful. I find doing the Bargue, even on my own, has really improved my eye when it comes to drawing. (PS I first discovered your works in Juliette Aristides' books, and am a big fan. You and your wife Cornelia are such an inspiration.)

One of the common complaint of Bargue drawing method is that your drawing is only as good as the level of your copy of the Bargue plate, there is no room for artistic freedom. It's more like learning with restraints. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.
@stephenbaumanartwork4 жыл бұрын
This is a good point- I definitely think that the early stages of learning to make representational art involves a lot of restraint. This strength will come in handy later on in the artist's career as well-

Amazing video! May i ask a concept that i don't fully grasp? It is about "negative spaces" and "shapes". So let's talk about the tiger shadow shape there. Is that a negative space or a "shadow shape" ? What about the spaces left on the light side. Can shadow shapes also be called negative space? Is shape design also done to light negative spaces and facial features? Im pretty confused with the naming of these thanks.
@stephenbaumanartwork4 жыл бұрын
The tiger is a shadow shape. Negative shapes will the the shape that the background makes when contrasted wither the silhouette of the darker or lighter edge of the subject. All shapes can be named- light shapes, halftone shapes, & shadow shapes.

Should the copies be made the same size as they appear in the book, or should they be made somewhat larger in size?
@stephenbaumanartwork3 жыл бұрын
That is helpful but not required.
@sagileibman55254 жыл бұрын
as always a great video! could you please elaborate about shape design and why does it matter? I mean, if i'm trying to create an exact copy of reality, why would I bother to design shapes and not just "copy" them as they are? thanks
@stephenbaumanartwork4 жыл бұрын
Fair question, I touched on this in the vid but maybe it needs more screen time. Perhaps a vid on shape design, full stop.
@sagileibman55254 жыл бұрын
@@stephenbaumanartwork well I understand that it helps with building up the form, yet I wonder how the drawing might be affected if you're using different designs. thanks for the reply!

Thank you, great video! The Beethoven plaster cast is actually a life mask. There is his death mask too but it looks much more lifeless as one would expect, with sunken eyes etc. See for example: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Ludwig_van_Beethoven
