You won't find out in the Anime, but when Shenron revived everyone killed by Cell, that included Android 17. He was revived at the exact spot where Cell absorbed him. 18 ended up finding 17 and after everything that's happened to both of them, they go their separate ways and live regular lives on Earth. 17 actually goes on to become a park ranger protecting endangered species. I guess you could say 16's influence and love for nature rubbed off on him. 17 acts tough, but he has a good heart.

I'm glad you mentioned the thing about ppl saying Goku wasn't a good father. I think he was. He was there for Gohan alot up until this point and the only times he wasn't was when he sacrificed himself to save the world. Gohan looks up to both Piccolo and Goku. If anything Piccolo is like an Uncle to Gohan.

When someone dies they dont keep their bodies, only their souls go through Enma, thats why we didnt saw Trunks in the other world, Gokus case is different because remember that Enma gave him that privilege when he died first against Raditz because he was going to be needed against Vegeta and Nappa and they needed Goku to train with king kai and thats why he was allowed to keep his body. After that he was allowed to keep his body because the many times he save the earth.

Given this was the initial end for DBZ until the later saga came a long and other subsequent content after this felt final. Gohan becoming new defender of the Earth and Goku choosing to stay dead as so others don’t have to pay for his past actions. But for me as many say was Vegeta’s introspection. Having Piccolo be the one to thank Vegeta for his brave actions was fitting Vegeta’s actions are something Piccolo understands all too well given he himself was also a reformed villain. Vegeta is just loss his only goal was to prove his strength to Goku especially since Goku one upped him time and again and for Goku to die the way he did Vegeta not only feels robbed of his goals but hallow in the aftermath. The prince of saiyans is literally the last pure blood saiyan alive and his only rival a ‘commoner’ not only proved his strength but he gave his life for those considered ‘weaker’ than him. For all his talk of being a ‘warrior’ Vegeta never was one, a conqueror maybe, but a warrior fights for others something Goku always did time and again and when the chips were down Goku did not hesitate to make the sacrifice play to give his life for others without a second thought. Its why Vegeta vows never to fight again as he had no meaning no purpose in his fights other than to kill and dominate. Goku proved he was not only stronger than Vegeta in power but also in integrity.

Dragon Ball is full of false endings. It's called Dragon Ball Z because it was to be the final series. Z being the last letter of the alphabet. Goku and Friza were to both die when Namek exploded. When the series was extended, they were rewritten to survive. Then again the Cell series was to be the end so they once again killed off Goku but it was extended yet again so they had to find a way to bring back Goku for the Buu series.

To me, the reason why Goku didn't come back was that he care so much about his family. Goku felt like his mere existence always put the Earth and his family in endanger. Madison's right there are no more villains to fight, but the reason Goku still chooses to stay dead is that there may be more villains out there that want him. Goku doesn't believe that Cell is the last villain that has beef with him.

@@tahjsimon9058 I’m pretty sure Earth was of no value to Frieza the reason it caught the Frieza Force’s attention was that Raditz was looking for Goku. Frieza then came to Earth to get revenge on Goku. The androids(13-20) were all made to kill Goku. I’m not saying it’s Goku’s fault but at times it does feel like he indirectly causes future hardships for the Earth just by living on it. That’s probably what made Goku start to feel guilty/responsible and think “Maybe it’s best if I don’t live on Earth”.

He questioned whether he had surpassed Gohan. And when Gohan said he was going to be in the tournament, Vegeta said he'll enter too. Seems Vegeta didn't need Goku for motivation.

Baris, Trunks is actually dead. They don't outright say it in the dub, but when Trunks coughed up blood and Vegeta went nuts on Cell, that was the moment Trunks died. In the Japanese version of Z (and in the dub of Kai) Yamcha tells them that Trunks has died from their injuries, but in the OG Funi dub, Yamcha just says "he's in bad shape" or something like that. They had to use the dragon balls to wish Trunks back to life

Everybody always asks why king kai wasnt revived when they wished everyone back. Yamchas exact words were, "please revive all those ON EARTH who were killed by cell." I believe if he'd left "on earth" out of the wish, Shenron would've revived king Kai, bubbles and Gregory.

Honestly even giving Cell a senzu bean was the best decision he could have done. Without cell at full powered there's a great chance he wouldn't have pushed Gohan to break through his limit and found a way to play him and beat him. Without ssj2, the chances of him losing were greater.

@@meow5261 nah I've had years mauling over this and only one thing remains constant, Gohan always has the greatest potential but he also gets cocky/distracted and can barely get the job done as he should. It was a huge risk for Goku to do this, but hess what it's arguably an even bigger risk to hope that Gohan would not only break through his limit and find this power but also be enough. Goku gambled with the xensu bean and gambled putting his faith in Gohan.

As for the senzu bean Goku give Cell didn't make a difference, alot of the dbfan base think that Cell had a power boost after he eats the senzu bean which is false because Cell was not injured, recovery from injury is how saiyan get power boost. But the problem was never because Goku had give Cell a senzu bean the problem was Gohan thinking he can convince Cell to stop his evil ways, even Android 16 knew that Gohan was holding back his true power (Gohan also knew he had the power) and he figured why Gohan don't want to use it.

i think the decision of guko to stay dead is a turn that the writer toriyama went with, and nothing to do with the former on fullfilling his``destroying the earth destiny." It was just death. plain and simple. he was at peace and time to leave the physical world. The writer basically planted the notion that everyone is vulnerable despite dbz cyle of die then get revived by the dragonball which is on the contrary of how fragile the real life of the viewers.

I wish Dragon Balls existed in reality so I could wish my Grandad back, he passed in March of this year and i’ve never been the same since, my mental health rapidly declined, lost my job and didn’t want to carry on… but i’m in a better place now and gradually getting better… watching DBZ with Baris and Madison has definitely helped, I grew up with it, watched it countless times and it never gets old - the story, depth of the characters and how incredibly relatable some are is a timely reminder of how not just me, but ANYONE can overcome the trials and tribulations life will throw at us. Man, the music in this version does not do justice, it's not like how I remember it watching Kai or the Japanese version. Also, refreshing to hear someone not jump on the GOKU BAD DAD bandwagon.

I think I have slightly refined my opinion on Goku as a father. I've said before that Goku is a loving father, but not necessarily a good one. But I think that's actually a little too simplistic. Goku is, without a doubt, a very loving father. And that is why many people consider him to be a good father despite his, also obvious, flaws as a father. And I have always said that those flaws mean that he is simply a loving father, but not a good one, because being a good father requires more than just loving your kids. And that is true, but Goku does do a lot more than just love his kids. Madison pointed out that being a martial artist is his focus in life, and that has been something that I have said is what makes him not a good father, because a good father would have his children as his primary focus. But again, I think that is too simplistic. Being a martial artist might be his number one objective in life, and that might keep him from being the best father that he could be, but he is still, as a whole, a good father, despite his flaws.

@@meow5261 I'll agree that Piccolo is the better father figure to Gohan, but I won't agree that simply being present in your kid's lives makes you a better father than Goku. All father's are going to do things in their lives that are bad fathering. They are going to be selfish, put their desires ahead of their kids, fail to notice what their kid is interested in, get caught up in work and not spend enough time at home, etc. If that automatically made them bad father's there would be no good father's Goku is a flawed but loving, and ultimately a good father. But he is undoubtedly a terrible husband.

The real reason Goku decided to stay on heaven was because Toriyama wanted Gohan to be the new main character. At his core, Goku cares about his family, but the story demanded he had to remain dead.

Sort of wish they used this in the dialogue, but why was Namek invaded and ultimately destroyed? It was because of the dragon balls being so valuable attracting god tier powerful dangers. Goku at the time wouldn't want to use his own personal incentive of coming back again while putting that entire reconstructed planet in danger of another invasion. So really, there was no safe way to bring him back. It wasn't till the next saga, where danger was universal and so it was an absolute emergency situation...

Trunks did die, just the English translation did a great work in making DBZ child-friendly. In the original, the moment Trunks spit out blood in the episode after he was hit by Cell was the moment he died. In the English version Yamcha only reacts by saying something like he's in bad shape or whatever.

In this version on DBZ it was edited out that Trunks died. Even the scene when Trunks was lying on the ground after being shot, he vomits out alot of blood then dies.

The first wish wouldn't have brought Goku back to life anyways. They asked "bring everyone killed by Cell on Earth back to life." Besides arguing if it was technically suicide by Goku there, he didn't even die on Earth so he wasn't included even though he was killed by Cells attack.

I always get emotional during this episode. Goku has a good point but it's a shame that his family will have to live without him. He has got the weight of the world on his shoulders that he has to think about that normal fathers don't. It's in his nature to think mostly about fighting and doing what's best along those lines but he loves his family even if it seems like they come second. Who going to tell Chi-Chi? Krillin? lol

This definitely shows the difference between male and female logic. Selflessness on this perspective more Goku and mostly men sayiy yeah I probably should stay "dead" because enemies will keep coming for Goku. And female logic more about Goku staying for family and helping Gohan grow up.

I think Mad fogets that its true that a ten year old boy needs a father, but what about the other 10 year old kids in the world that lost their father and they dont have dragon balls to wish them back like the Z fighters? I understand what she means about saying that Goku is single minded but shes wrong, its honorable because he is not thinking about him, of course he would love to be with his family and friends, and he is giving up that to save the earth and to keep villains away. It would have been selfish to wish to come back, and yes its true he has benefits on the other side to hang out, but he earned it by saving the earth so many times, no one else has that privilege
