It's Watches & Wonders week baby! The Time+Tide team is on the ground bringing you coverage of all the new releases. But we're also getting to see old friends after two years of digital presentations as well as meeting some for the first time.
After several negroni-filled Zoom Meetings and the odd collaboration, the long awaited meeting of Andrew and George finally took place. Add in the spice of Adrian from Bark & Jack and you've got yourself a party.
Like the watch you've only gazed at longingly from afar but never got to hold, sometimes they're just better in the metal.
In between the gags, the boys picked some of their favourite watches from Day One. Read on below to see their choices and check out the video for the full show.
Andrew's Pick - The Grand Seiko SLGT003 Kodo Constant-Force Tourbillon.
There were progressive moans in the background from the T+T team when this one was unveiled. This is the new heavyweight champion, taking the title of Grand Seiko's most complicated watch ever. The complication combines a constant-force mechanism and a tourbillon as one unit on a single axis. Built on top of the T0 concept movement introduced in 2019, the Kodo has undergone further mechanical refinement to ensure it further adhered to Grand Seiko's grammar of design.
Available in October and priced at 370K euros it's limited to 20 pieces (19 if Andrew has his way).
George's Pick - The TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 1000 Superdiver
The new titanium Professional 1000 Superdiver is a straight-up beast. This 1000-metre professional tool, ISO-certified for saturation diving, harks back to the spirit of the uber-cool 1000m Diver and Super Professional models from the ‘80s, but with a design language in line with the modern 300-metre model. Naturally, the case dimensions are going to be bigger than the 300, at 45mm, but the height of 15.75mm is completely reasonable for a 1000-metre diver.
The Tag Heuer Aquaracer Professional 1000 Superdiver will be available in June of 2022, checking in at just under $10K AUD.
Adrian's Pick - The Patek Philippe Calatrava 5226G
Proving that not all heroes are called Nautilus or Aquanaut, this field-watchesque Calatrava is pure fire from PP. Housed in a 40mm white gold case with an incredible textured charcoal grey dial with a black gradient rim and gold applied numerals with beige luminescent coating, it ticks all the boxes as a luxury everyday option.
The Calatrava 5226G is priced at 33,000 CHF.

@@matthewdale956 I've just registered interest at my AD. Looks like they've had a fair amount of demand already - but it isn't going to be a "rare" piece. If folks want one they will get one sooner or later. (That said, they told me it'll be at least a year before they'd have one for me...) I think it's a killer piece. Smart-casual is a clever way to go for Patek's precious metal line up. These days most people only want one true dress watch (in my case a JLC Reverso.)

On the one hand that Patek looks hot. On the other hand it doesn’t look like a Patek. Rather it looks like a microbrand release. As ArchieLuxury puts it - watches are all about BS stories and snobbery, and if people can’t tell straight away that it’s a Patek, then it doesn’t have the snob factor people lust after, and what I would want if I was to fork out the amount of cash needed for a Patek.

@@thegorn Yeah, I see what you're getting at. Watches absolutely can be status symbols for many people - and that's okay. But when it comes to Patek, Journe, et al, I think it's also about what I would call "group-insider-recognition" - a bit like wearing a Regimental or an Oxford College tie. I don't think someone would stroll down the street with a _Chronomètre à Résonance_ in the hope that the regular man (or perhaps even the regular watch enthusiast?) is going to look at it and think: "oh wow, he has one of _those!_ ". It is for the owner himself, first and foremost, and for those very few select individuals with an eye to see and knowledge to understand.

But from what I've heard, the lefties like the date on the 9 oclock position so that when they wear it on their wrist with a dress shirt, the date is more easily readable as the watch slides under the cuff. Makes sense to me.
