Honestly so glad this video came up. What killed the collab for me is exactly that: the quality issues! Mine once stopped over night! I thought the battery died already (what would have been strange) but then i engaged the pushers and bloody hell the chrono hand started to move. I then gave the watch a few gentle taps and since then it has been running. My Point is: If Omega decides to put their name on the dial, the watch has to be superior to Swatch quality. This is what a real collab should be, now it is just borrowing a Name and a design... Sad for the Brand ...

Omega had nothing to do with the moonswatch. They even did not like the idea and did anything they could to not make it happen. The Swatchgroup was stronger in the end unfortunately. It’s really a shame that they need the hype. Omega’s design team are running the brand into the ground. If they would bring on new designers/creative directors that were actually watch fans and in tune with the market, they could easily be the biggest brand in the world. As for Swatch, their main issue is the sizes. The old ones are 33mm and the new stuff is too large. They need a 36mm. Fairly easy fix. I think most of these Swiss brands are in dire need of new talent at the helm.

@@speedwolf5212 I think you’re blasphemous words are 100% correct. Omega is one creative director away from super success. Look at what Breitling has just done with their new designs, just stunning. Sure, anything slightly toned down from Breitlings mega-tacky recent history would have been good but they have just knocked it out of the park this go round. Omega feels safe and stale to me. Absolutely fine good looking watches without a soul. TBF I’m the last person to speak about Omega because their aesthetic as a whole has never spoken to me. The Swatch comment is so dead on. Too small to too large. Basic Swatch should be 36 (not 34), chronos and divers 38, and chrono divers 40. No idea why they thought 43 was a good idea. Swatch make loud designs that just come off as clown shoes at that size. You know like RM does. If people have to try that hard to be noticed they need to work on their personalities first. They seriously look like toasters on the wrist. I would also add that Swatch need better quality built into them. I own tons of them and they really are quite shit. They wind like a 15 year old learning to drive stick for the first time, functions stop working from out of nowhere, and they break easily. This goes for the Quartz versions as well. How do they use ETA and have these issues? Make them better and adjust prices accordingly. Make them easy to service as well. Swatch is a very collector friendly brand and if they just built them with some longevity in mind I think we’d see them explode again. Well that, and get the sizing dialed in.

My first watch at 6 years old was a Swatch and I absolutely loved it! To cut a long story short, I’ve owned many watches from around the globe but I’m particularly fed up with everything that has to do with the Swatch brand including Omega which I have just recently bought and it‘s already in repair - can happen, fair enough. What makes me mad though, is that I bought a Swatch Ivory and the crown broke (Believe me not my fault and error). I returned to swatch to have it fixed and they sent it back to me after 6 weeks saying they will not fix it with no further explanation. At the time I thought they didn’t want to do it for free, so I decided to just pay for the repair myself and resent it back to them saying I’ll cover the costs…. After waiting once again I received the watch back with the same note, that they are unwilling to repair it even if I pay. I had the watch for less that a year and having had at least 20 watches thus far being super careful with every piece and never broke a single one - I was pissed and still am after well over 5 years! Still have my first piece and over 30 now, if that adds some perspective… Their customer service is terrible and I regret buying the omega even though I love the watch and knew Swatch had acquired Omega years ago. @tomldickinson2 жыл бұрын
I have the all-black one. I love it, it's very cool - but to be completely honest I waited until some of the hype had died down and I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. I love Speedmasters - I have one from 1970 that I wear almost every day and it's clearly built like a tank. I love vintage Swatch and collect those too. I know (from owning mint Swatches from the 1980s) that when you look after an affordable plastic watch they can and will last for decades. I think some people bought the MoonSwatch expecting it to be a good daily beater - but in reality the MS is Sooooo delicate. Any slight prang will damage the 'crystal' or case. It's weirdly my most fragile watch - I treat it like a vintage dress watch. Even though that's strange and not for everyone, it looks great, I enjoy wearing it and talking about it, and I know if I keep it in mint condition in future it will be a classic and regarded piece of Swatch and Omega history. I think that last point is unquestionable, because whether you like the MoonSwatch or not, it became a significant part of both brands' history the moment it was released.
@tonygluk12 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about that last point. The fact that MS was all the rage for a few month doesn't make it prominent from historical perspective.
@tomldickinson2 жыл бұрын
@@tonygluk1 Thanks for your reply. I definitely see what you’re saying about the hype. What I mean is that I cannot imagine any book or document of either brands’ histories that would omit this bizarre and strange chapter. Particularly the historical context of the pandemic and the fact Omega didn’t get its bump from Bond or the Olympics. If it did I don’t think it would be a complete history. That’s all I’m saying. If the prices don’t increase I could care less - that’s not why I collect watches. I’m just a nerd.

Since then, even when fully wound, it will just stop sometimes. That was $200 USD flushed down the toilet pretty much. No more plastic watches for me.

I’ve always loved the concept of the moonswatch but I’ve always said (and posted) that they are too expensive for what you get. You can get get an orient Kamasu with automatic movement, sapphire crystal, all steel, including bracelet and 200 meters water resistance for less than 200€. Hell, you can get a swatch irony sistem51 for less than 200€. I have a swatch irony that’s almost 20 years old that’s been banged up for 20 years and it’s still running beautifully. I just change the battery when ever needed and that’s it. The movement in the moonswatch is a very good quartz movement that will last forever but the watch build is very poor.

My Speedmaster Pro (Hesalite) had a pusher issue. It unscrewed itself, Never found it. Sent it in under warranty. They replaced both pushers and gave the watch a complete service even though it was only 1 1/2 years old. But when I got it back, it was gaining a massive amount of time daily. The conclusion was that it had probably been exposed to a strong magnetic field somewhere in transit. Not my fault, but not Omega's either. Regardless, they gave me a new watch. You get what you pay for. Can't imagine them doing any of that for the Moon Swatch.

Hi Adrian, great video and food for thought. One question came to mind for me watching your segment though; did you contact Swatch to have it repaired or replaced? I'm assuming it does fall within the warranty no? It looks to me from your video that the bio ceramic cracked and could have been a batch that was improperly mixed or didn't cool right or even had bubbles form, weakening the final product. Only one third of the mix is ceramic and I would have to say that mixing ceramic and plastic can't be the easiest to do industrially. Completely agree about Seiko 5, they are fantastic value and the CWC G10 isn’t even a homage, you are getting the actual MOD approved watch! Not a cereal box version (as coined by one of the commentators on Hoodinkee). As for your swatch, have you tried a warranty claim? I’m sure they’ll sort you out 👍🏻 I’ve had a few swatches and they often replace the watch entirely within warranty period. A swatch is not serviceable other than battery changes. But OMEGA did not even like the idea. They did for a long time anything they could to NOT make this happen. I agree, the average-guy out in the streets will not know. But OMEGA had to pass on the design to Swatch, as the Swatch Group (which OMEGA belongs to as well) asked for it in an "insisting" way. They had no options. OMEGA also had zero development on this watch - they just "donated" the design. I would even say technically, this was robbery. Secondly anybody who is into watches knew, that this is not a quality product, not anywhere close to a real Speedy Moonwatch. Still, I understand the disappointment from Adrian. If I had one (and I try to get one, too), I would also be disappointed seing the watch drop to pieces... but all others (who are not into watches) will maybe just scrap it and turn over that page. BTW the comparison at 5:30-ish is with the Omega with the plastic "glass", which will definitely get scratched sooner rather than later... also the MoonSwatch plastic glass does look a lot like it... Oh and I have a "Snoopy MoonSwatch - Mission to Moonphase - New Moon" which was £270 quid, but the price per letter of the name is much more reasonable at £5.29... 😀 I am enjoying it, but with some negatives: The hands are fairly hard to read when it's dull, as the lume appears black like the face so there's limited white. The big white seconds hand dominates your vision when the hands are near to it. I think the best thing to do is to use the big seconds hand as, err. a seconds hand... so just start the chrono running when the sub seconds hand hits 12 o'clock and leave it running. (Though they don't advance in step most of the time, which is actually a plus for the Chrono function.) I believe the movement is by ETA, which at least sounds good.. Setting the Moon-phase is a pain and you have to reset the time afterwards as it uses the same setting position on the Crown, so stops the time advancing. The "real" seconds hand (on the sub-dial) does stop moving when you move to the time setting position on the crown, but I'd prefer it if it parked itself at 0 seconds (i.e. 12 o'clock) as that makes setting the minute hand simpler (I just aim to pull the crown out at that exact moment). Curiously the 8-shaped blocking part of the Moon sub-dial is vertical and somewhat transparent, white on the white one it is horizontal and opaque, I assume this is so you can still see Snoopy when he's behind it. There's assorted UV sensitive stuff in the Moon sub-dial and a UV keyring torch in the Box. Even with a real UV torch (vs the mini one that came in the box) reading the Snoopy quotes on the moon sub-dial is a (powerful) magnifying glass job. The writing on the strap either side of the watch is UV sensitive (I was going to replace it as apparently the bars are spring-loaded, now maybe not). BTW it feels heavier than the previous Swatch Speedies I handled, that might be the strap. (Really doesn't matter but for completeness) The Big Seconds hand advancing in whole seconds means the Tacho function is pretty limited. The plastic "glass" is kinda reminiscent of the one Omega used on the original watches (and still do on the more historical-based new ones, vs sapphire and its less desirable look at the edges on others. No date function, which would have been handy. Free replacement batteries (in a Swatch boutique) for the life of the Watch is a nice touch. Nice fit on my 7" wrist. Probably my first and last Swatch, but I'm allowed one aren't I? (Plus selling for quite a mark-up on eBay if I decided I didn't like it. I don't plan to do that though.) P.S. Haven't broken a pusher yet, but early days... P.P.S. Will do a straight swap for an Apollo 13 Snoopy in mint condition if anyone has to have the latest/greatest MoonSwatch... 🙂

It will be interesting to see what happens to speedmaster sales in the next 2-5 years. I've always wanted a speedmaster but never had the courage to purchase one. I think my Mission to Mercury "gateway watch" might just push me over the threshold - the OxS watch pusher that didn't fail.
@sebastien64832 жыл бұрын
I would have lost my shit if a pusher broke off my watch as normal wear and tear. The games with the distribution of the moonswatch completely killed it for me. I wouldn't buy one if the offer was in my face. Omega should just bring more colors to the speedmaster line. The Dark/Blue/White/Grey side of the moon variants were well received.

I had a friend who recently bought a speedmaster from somewhere in the early 2000’s who’s pusher fell off after he bought it. No one could fix it and he had to send it to omega. Omega did a full service and repair. $1100 and 3 months later he got it back and 3 days later the crown broke off. So……
@bikeman1232 жыл бұрын
The speedmaster pushers are easily replaced. There's plenty of watchmakers who can service it. Omega servicing is nearer £800, independents half that. My Speedmaster is now 55 years old, it's a quality watch and not what you suggest. Is your nose growing?

They want you to have that "luxury purchase experience" where you travel into a busy city, camp out with a bunch of scalpers, and then fight your way into a store to hopefully snag a plastic watch that may break in a few months. Once it breaks, it would be a damn shame if all you had to remember the experience was a quick and efficient online checkout.

I also have the Jupiter as they had it as I walked past the store. It scratches so easily. A gust of wind and I have a new scratch on the “glass”. Too bad they produce them from such poor quality components. I do not recommend buying these. They are fun but not worth it.

My MoonSwatch is going great, no problems, no damage, and with a Seiko mecha-quartz movement the accuracy varies less than a second a week. The sensually bumpy Rolex-style multi-link stainless steel bracelet flexes comfortably with tight tolerances. The matte sterling dial is framed by a deep red bezel and crystal--both sapphire--that gleam flamboyantly atop a well executed brushed stainless steel case. The rocket ship chronograph subdial hands are bop and the watch is water resistant to 100 m, (330 feet.) Sporting a screwdown crown and screwdown back, the watch can be opened and repaired. If you tire of the elegant stainless steel bracement, my watch was also shipped with a decent NATO strap that lets you vary your look from day to day. Oh, wait, mine ISN'T a MoonSwatch. I'm wearing a Pagani PD-1701 moonwatch homage, but with with the high-end specs Swatch left out. It doesn't have a brittle plastic case, no cheap acrylic crystal and no choice of straps; you have to settle for a single low-end NATO st;yle. The permanently sealed case cannot be opened to repair. Despite not having a sealed case, the PD-1701 has ah, 100 m better water resistance than the MoonSwatch's basic, "water resistant". It does have one thing in common with the MoonSwatch: style, which Pagani did better because this watch drips, it says, 'just try not to look at me!' There are two more differences: you can buy four PD-1701s for the price of one MoonSwatch, if you're willing to skip over the dubious privilege of paying an extra $210 to advertise that Omega logo.

I was in Rome yesterday while on holiday and I thought I’d check out the MoonSwatch. Heck, maybe even walk out of the Swatch boutique with one. Walking round the corner in to Via del Corso I saw there was a big queue outside of the shop. Apparently there still is high demand for this watch. To be honest, I would have bought one to if I wasn’t ready to wait for an hour in 40 degrees centigrade. Now I’m glad I didn’t.

The near-term benefits to the Omega and Swatch brands aside, in terms of simple quality for price my money was better spent on the Speedmaster homage by Pagani with the Seiko VK63 movement and sapphire crystal. It was ridiculous for Omega/Swatch to make this watch out of bioceramic with a plastic crystal fused to the watch so it cannot be replaced - plus a cheap movement. While I don't mind any company producing a more affordable version of their own popular product, deliberately making one of such obviously poor quality actually does more to hurt their brand than help in the long run after the hype dies down and the problems start to surface. Yeah, it was great to see the lines at the stores for a simple watch, the online enthusiasm, and even the crazy resale prices - but just how many people will get turned off in the end because they got burned by poor quality? Unfortunately, I think it will be too many.

I thought and eventually did the same thing and bought the Pagani Design PD-1701 V3 for like 70 USD on the sale. MoonSwatch is a brilliant idea but essentially what you get is an overpriced toy.
@saairgunner59252 жыл бұрын
The problem for Omega is that they had to do it with Swatch, like they did. If they made a cheap version, similar to a Pagani Design and call it an Omega and sell it for $200, it will cheapen their image immeasurably. So they had to do it this way, with the Moonswatch being a sort of caricature of the real deal. And that is all right.

I do enjoy the look of it though and the Moonswatch gives me similar vibes for a fraction of the price. My explorer will get 95% of my wrist time but this is a fun watch to throw on now and again. Btw, I actually like the strap - as some others have mentioned, swap the part with the omega logo to the 12 position and it becomes much more comfortable.

Making it a "physical shop only" item has to be the biggest own-goal. I probably would have bought one, never having held it, from the online store. Definitely not dragging over to Melbourne and heading out to whoop whoop Chadstone. No sale.

They had the entire set on display but NON for sale. It was pathetic. Either you want to sell them because they're a commodity or you don't. I guess they're just super afraid of flippers but they would have 100% made a sale on me because I think they're a cool trinket but not going to go out of my way.

I love the idea of the MoonSwatch, they look awesome and they injected some much needed fun and excitement into the watch world. My issue with them was that I just couldn’t see how they were worth the RRP. I have one Swatch in my collection which I bought on eBay for £30 and based on my experience with that watch I wouldn’t ever pay anymore than that for a Swatch. It’s fine for what it is and it’s not a terrible watch but it feels flimsy and delicate. If I’m honest I’d much rather spend 30 quid on a Casio than on a Swatch. When you combine that with the supply and demand issues and then the whole scalpers and price gouging thing it means the MoonSwatch isn’t for me sadly.

Unfortunately, I can’t say I’m not surprised. Like you , I admire the concept. I even admire the asthetics, but as soon as anything is done “on the cheap”, the liklihood of failure increases exponentially. I was ignorant if the impening Moonswatch release until the night before. On the morning of the release, I went to my local Swatch retailer and gawped at the queues. As I walked home, dejected, I looked at the Omega Speedmaster 38 on my wrist and thought to myself…… WTF am I thinking about? When would I ever wear the Moonswatch in preference to my Speedmaster? The simple answer was never. Since then, I’ve watched the reviews change from unequivocal conceptial support, to downright criticism. I’m sure many will remain fully supportive of their purchase. For what it’s worth, I’ve aways been a believer in whatever makes you happy has worth and value. But, even if you ignore financial value and consider only build quality and reliability, I’ll stick with my Speedmaster 38 and be forever grateful that I didn’t wast my mney on a Moonswatch.
