I don't really get what's so confusing or controversial, a "scandi-grind" is just nickname and a simpler way to describe a "short saber-grind with no secondary bevel/edge". A "scandi-vex" is just an easy way to describe a "short saber-grind with no secondary bevel and is convex", or a "scandi-grind that's convex ground". It's just name given to describe in a simple way something specific with a specific purpose, which is how most words/names are created in the first place. I guess by the same logic you could also say that there no such thing as a "bushcraft" knife, and that they are merely short camp knives, or they are just hunting knives with a shorter bevel (and so on), but I see he uses all three of those names (and more) to describe his knives. Honestly, this reminds me of when guys get bothered over bladesmiths using the term "damascus" to describe pattern-welded steel, which is simply the widely accepted and modern term used to describe pattern-welded steel. Nothin' against Mike, and I honestly couldn't care less if guys want to call it a "scandi" or "saber" or a "purple daisy", but this particular video just seemed to be mostly concerned with some needless nit-picking. Ok, I'm done, lol. Take care :)

Honestly i love the term scandivex. It says exactly what it means. Also it's my favorite kind of grind. I know this is by no means scientific but this is how I personally categorize grinds: there are convex, flat, scandi, scandivex and concave grinds. Each can be a full grind, a grind with micro bevel or one with secondary edge (v, convex or concave). This alone allows 25 different grinds. Than the spine can have different highs, the angle of course can vary, concave and convex grinds can have different curvature and the tip can be differently tapered.

Lol "You guys made that shit up" killed me. I've always stroped tip first As Well. It seemed like the tip wouldn't get as sharp as if I went hilt to tip.

Thank you, I was told this knife had a scandi grind-you hear that all over the place-but it doesn’t, as I figured out when I went to sharpen it. I was confused and doubting myself until I saw this video!

This reminds me of the music timing argument where one may argue that there are only really two times - 2 time and 3 time. 4 time is only two 2s; and 6 time is only two 3s, etcetera. It’s a technicality that doesn’t actually effect the music. And it often comes down to arguing over semantics. But for the record - people who only sharpen their knives perfectly flat on a stone can tell the difference between a Scandi-flat-grind and a Scandi-convex-grind that is sharpened on a strop. I’m not saying the flat grind will be better. In fact I think the Scandi-Vex is better. I’m just saying - there is a difference between flat and convex, and that is the difference.

Dunno bout the other peeps but the convex grind got me interested with the bravo. Still waiting for mine to arrive though and really hoping the tang isn't skeletonized coz I liked it hefty.

Im actually a bit more confused now, but I still want to know how to grind my from-factory scandi's into more convex grinds. Do I just follow the basic convex grind method or do I have to recontour the blade with the bevel and stuff?

saber-grind doesn't exist it's just a very tall scandi-grind ... but if you want you can call it saber-grind

I love making convex grinds and for whatever reason I feel I can get my edge very sharp and it just seems easier. My method needs to change however because I feel extremely unsafe grinding it the way I do on the top of my grinder where the belt is slack at about chest to neck height rather than removing my platen and grinding down lower with the belt force moving down rather than towards my chest. Terrible habit I must stop immediately.

This is so unnecessarily pedantic. The word "Scandi" only means that it is of Scandinavian origin. That particular grind is very popular on Scandinavian knives. Therefore scandi grind. Just because it doesn't exist in your personal vernacular doesn't mean you need to belittle any who use it.

That's great, and I appreciate the response, but the truth is that it really didn't come off that way and since he's a trusted part of the knife community that means care needs to be taken in how information is related. I bet you even money that more than a few people take this information to heart.

Not taking it personally, I just don't like misinformation. And truth told, if it were a useless grind then why is it so prevalent, especially in historical pieces? Useless? For cutting apples, totally. For cutting curls in wood and carving tasks? Works fine.
