Always liked IWC, just never saw the value in them... until that Portugieser Automatic 40mm. With a 60 hour power reserve and Côtes de Genève perlage for virtually the same money ($7,200 USD vs $7,050) as a JLC Ultra Thin Small Seconds with only 43 hour power reserve and lacking the movement detail, makes this look a realtively good value. And NEVER apologize for barbequing when the weather permits. As a former resident of Minnesota I remember doing it in December, in my garage... during a blizzard. Gotta do what you gotta do.

Another classic Bark & Jack video Adrian, I see IWC watches as ones I would "aspire" to own, especially their 40mm Pilot line. As a former Master Mariner I would rather reach for my copy of Admiralty tide tables than rely on something on my wrist. Regardless of the complications and price! Going off on a tangent, how about a video on your taste in whiskies? Keep safe, keep sane and keep producing such top notch content.

Nice review. As a boater the tide function is legit. But a tide table costs $15 so not crucial. But if you do have a boat and actually do the navigation then it would be a nice thing to have for your local waters. I like the new Yacht Clubs, but I do wish they were 42 rather than 44. They're always going to be big though, as that's the Portugueser DNA.

@brianfrancis5711
@brianfrancis5711 4 жыл бұрын
While the new 40 mm automatic will appeal to more people due to decreased size and no need to wind, IWC is turning its back on the history of the Portuguese and what made it unique. It was developed for 2 merchants from (you guessed it) Portugal to be a wristwatch that was accurate enough to be used as a marine chronometer and thus had a manual wind pocket watch movement in a huge case. Hope they don’t drop this version from the catalogue. It’s similar to when they made the Ingenieur with a sapphire case back and no antimagnetism a couple years back. What are they thinking?

One thing that bothers me is when they cut off part of the hour number. Is see that a bit with these watches you discussed. When I went to the IWC boutique in NYC back in December, I tried in the Portuguese Moonphase with Roman numerals. There the moonphase sundial was partially obscuring the XII to the point where it looked like a VII. Other than that, I thought that watch was great. Have you noticed other makers doing this? Does it bother you?

As someone who is just getting into serious astrophotography, I’ve been wondering if a moonphase watch might actually be something useful for me to own - when planning out what I’m going to be shooting, sometimes with only a few hours notice (cloudy skies suddenly clearing up in the evening), knowing how bright the moon will be is a necessity in knowing what I can shoot - if it’s full moon it makes it much harder shooting deep space objects. Yes I can just google it (that is what I do now) but we can all use our phones to tell the time anyway.... As nice as that IWC is though I also am not in a position to drop that amount of money on anything haha.

Loving the new Portugieser range but must take issue with your comment about 'why have a moon phase?': In many parts of the world knowledge of the arrival of a new moon is not only of interest, its absolutely essential. The Holy month of Ramadan cannot begin until a new moon is sighted and very VERY wealthy families will pay a premium to have this knowledge accurately indicated on their wrist. Keep up the good work

Hi Adrian, if you live by the sea knowing the tides is actually very useful, whether you're boating, fishing, diving or just going for a walk along the beach. Arguably a more useful complication than a moonphase (unless you're a werewolf of course). So in a way I'm surprised it's not more common - a dive watch with a tide complication would make real sense. Maybe Omega can step up with a Seamaster which really masters the sea. Cheers

What is it about watches that makes people get annoyed at pricing I wonder, what I mean is, plenty of us I'm sure drool over new Farraris or Lambos or Bugattis, or even Corvettes and have no problem with their prices because I assume we have that little voice that says "Man Thats georgous, but I'll never own one" but when it comes to timepieces I always look at IWC and Patek, etc and think "HTF is that worth $100k??

Wearing a different timepiece everyday, I cannot be bothered to reset day, month, moonphase, celestial time, tidal time and what not seven times a week. So I usually focus on three handers, maybe with a nice date window Which is why the most interesting of the bunch in this video is the Portugieser Automatic 40. Looks brilliant, I guess finishing is top end, the movement is a thing of beauty, dimensions are spot on and, while £6500 is not a small amount of money for the entry level in any brand, it’s not absurd when talking about IWC. But 30 meter depth rating ? Come on, the Portugieser is a wrist worn marine chronometer for God’s sake, not a fashion gimmick. And I’m not even sure it’s chronometer certified. 😲 Not so long ago on this channel, another Swiss brand got some flak for having no screw down crown on a casual water sports watch, despite boasting 100 meter of water resistance.

People are getting fatter. That’s a fact. They increase the sizes because fat people have bigger wrists. Same goes for the clothing industry. A Medium in the past is now a Small, because of the psychology behind this: fat people will think they have a good body..
