FeedXL is amazing to figure out the percentages of ingredients in feeds and supplement. It was a real eye opener for me!

Choosing the right food for my horse was a complete nightmare with how much my barn owner judged what I feed him and the brand I use. She would want to charge me to pick up my feed just to be nosey and always calls my grain “special feed” when she texts me about it. I felt terrible until I found out my trainer uses the exact grain I do and it works great for our horses. Supplements has been the struggle lately because they never seem to work even if I feed it for 6 months straight. I am going to look into joint supplements for my old man soon so hopefully smartpak will have what he needs.

What! That’s crazy I’m so sorry you go through that with the barn owner. I always try to be flexible if an owner wants to feed something different than what I offer I don’t judge! Supplements are so tough I feel like so many don’t work!

I miss you! Also, I am now feeding very good quality first cut hay. Since getting the mustang, and wanting to allow them to eat 24/7 I have found it perfect. I use hay nets for whole bales and end up with very little waste. I did Crypto Aero forage as a balancer, and their grain for Chipper. Then a couple flakes of compressed alfalfa for all three of them. I just started Vit E and I add salt. I have to say, no one worked this winter due to ice but Chipper is coming into spring looking the best he has looked top line wise. Everyone is a healthy weight. I plan on stopping the grain and alfalfa once they are on pasture and am looking into a track system for keeping them. It’s amazing the things you learn when you start to get geeky with it! What are your thoughts/experience with joint supplements? Have you found anything that actually shows improvement? I am hoping with the track and consistent movement the old lady stays in decent shape, but would pay for something to make her more comfortable as she ages if it worked. I love that you are posting more often!

Ah i love hearing this! And I’ve heard great things about crypto aero. Joint wise I do believe stuff like Cosequin works but only if you start it early before there’s already arthritis if that makes sense. Like Rex got Cosequin starting at 6/7 until 13. As soon as they are teenagers with arthritis I move them to adequan injections (typically the vet recommends a series of them over the course of a month and we do this 1-2 a year depending on horses arthritis) and the competition horses get legend injections once a month during the season. I’ve also heard good things about Hagyards joint supplements, might be worth looking into!

Curious how much say and input you get in what you feed? I know as barn manager where I am I get no real say. I can give input, i.e. say if a horse's weight is not where it should be and make suggestions, but that's really it. We fed the Purina senior grain for a while, but due to a change in formula plus a mix up at the feed mill, we had one of the old guys choke. We've since switched over to Tribute exclusively for all grain. The barn owner also spends hundreds of dollars on random supplements and I really question how effective they are. In general I totally get why people are against grain and I would agree that forage based as much as possible is ideal. But I think it's important to take each horse and their needs individually. I know even with quarts and quarts of grain we still can't keep weight on the old ones. They have horrible teeth and just can't eat that much hay or grass so forage based only just isn't an option.

Totally get that. While I love a forage based diet I also have had some super hard keepers and older guys that need heavy grain diets. There’s definitely always a horse that needs that surely. I actually just got a horse in that is on three hefty grain meals a day because she’s large and underweight and put broodnare here more grain than most cause she’s eating for two! I definitely get more input than most and my opinions on supplements and grain are always at least discussed. When I actually came in the barn manager at the time had eliminated feeding beet pulp and alfalfa and was feeding more grain - thankfully I was able to bring this back! I don’t have full say, but I feel my thoughts matter.

Do you find yourself talking out loud everywhere you go after doing these vlogs? Like working out in the gym and talking to yourself or shopping and talking to yourself.... Just me doing that, oh ,ok

🤣🤣🤣 haha no I definitely don’t prefer to talk out loud. I am actually super shy about filming the vlog if anyone is around that’s why I’m always alone!
