We are taking down our 100 year old barn because it is leaning. We are hoping to use the barn wood in the rebuilding of our home.

I’m part of the 6th generation on our farm. When we go riding around with my dad and he sees these barns that are falling apart it just breaks his heart. If these barns could tell stories... I couldn’t imagine what they would have to say. Thank you for reusing some of them materials, I’ll definitely be showing my dad.

The first thing I thought of when you were discussing the "what you save or spend growing food" was the many expenses you won't have because of being healthier, happier people! All those medical bills, prescriptions, etc. that you WON'T end up spending money on because the food you grow is so much more nutritious and not actually detrimental to your health, as is the case with much of our food from the grocery store.

Not to mention the physical exercise, the natural vitamin D, the grounding/earthing from constant work touching the earth, the clean air, and just the sheer happiness of a life of connection with the planet and with your family. All of those things are priceless on their own but their effect on your health is also incredible.

That was a very old barn, probably dating back to 1880 or thereabouts. I used to play in the barn at my grandparents which was built before 1920 (I have a picture taken in 1920 of the barn and it was already quite weathered. It stands yet today used by a cousin who still farms the land. Not a pole barn though, that's why I think yours was a lot older. It was painted barn red when I was a child but hasen painted for many years. There is an old buggy still in it that my grandpa would hitch a mule to and drive the family to town as he never owned a car. Needless to say those are really happy memories.

I just want to add a couple thoughts to the discussion of growing your own food. I live in town and have a small lot and limited space (I would love an acreage- someday!). I need a place to live anyhow so why not make the most out of that space? I grow as much food as I can, make my own compost, collect rainwater, and have added chickens this year. My goal is to make my yard work as hard as it can to benefit me. Why have a perfect lawn I need to mow when I can feed myself? Am I saving money? Hopefully in the long run I will but I cannot buy the quality of food that I am growing. My mental health is definitely better when I am digging in the dirt, walking around my garden observing my plants, and laughing at my chickens' antics. I have the opportunity to bring fresh lettuce and peas to my grandparents (who are delighted to see the next generation gardening!). The benefits are overwhelming! :)

Chamomile is time consuming to harvest. When you have that much it's worth it to use a Chamomile Rake. Johny's Seeds has them. Chamomile is fantastic for more than tea. It's so healing! You can add it to a herb blend for a foot or bath soak, wash a fretting baby with a tea to calm, use as a eye wash, add to cookies for your kids, and a lot more! I love the lifestyle you are living! You are saving a lot of money when you consider how your lives are affected over a lifetime of good food, living so close to nature, and amazing family time. Blessed!

Hopefully you & your nephew take notes, photos & pay attention to the construction of the old barn because it's a wealth of information that you could use to build a new barn or other structures. Imagine being able to recreate a new barn using the same techniques they used over a century ago. I wish I were younger so I could do it. I'd love to be able to do things like that.

Mint is a lot better if you freeze it than dry it. It retains more flavor. Just pick the leaves off the stem, wash it, and stuff it by handfuls into a freezer bag. Push the air out and put it in the freezer. I put enough to make a gallon of mint tea into a quart bag so that it is ready to go when I need it in the winter.

This video is another visual stunner! Thank you Art ,Bri & Kids, & Critters ! Bri, when I have extra abundant herbs, instead of pulling individual blossoms, I take the top foot or so off the plant with sheers. Hang them upside down in the barn in rubber banded bunches with string till dry. Then crush them off the stems in a big tub or wheelbarrow and bag them up in labeled paper sacks. (Good kid job )? Those extra mature ones would be great just cast around wild areas to seed. That much chamomile must smell like heaven! Such a beautiful property you have there! I think you are already busy enough though! Lol.

My son's great grandmother on his mom's side had a stone used by her grandparents to fasten the milk cow to for grazing. The stone was slightly oblong and maybe 10-14 inches long. The cow could move it some, but didn't go far due to the weight of it. They didn't have to worry about her wondering away. The stone had been well rounded over the years and you could tell where the rope was tied, and which end had rubbed the ground. She called it a grazing stone... Have you ever heard of something like that??

On the cost/benefit front, you also need to include that you cannot go to the store and buy food equivalent to what you are growing/raising yourselves. If a person is just trying to survive at the lowest possible cost - buy the commodity food products at the stores. But if a person wants to eat extraordinarily high quality food, you can't beat growing your own.
