Art, y’all have a challenge ahead of you! Bri is an excellent wife and mother. A few things I can think of that may help... treat the house project like a job. Set your specific hours. Arrive on time, set your breaks and lunches to set times, and leave work on time. For Bri, outdoor cooking may be a big help for her. Setting up an outdoor oven, use cast iron, and she can cook some seriously big meals- soups and stews can go far. Something that can also happen is begin teaching your oldest to edit videos. She will learn quickly and soon take over editing. Going back to you, with treating the home as a full time job, on your two days off, you can step in and give Bri relief. This will keep things mixed up and help keep things going. Grace is old enough that she can take the smaller kids to do tasks so that Bri and you can get big things done. Don’t fret if things don’t happen. It’s time to work as a team more than ever. Maybe sitting down and having daily family meetings with everyone’s tasks and goals for the day in discussion, being open to the kids and let them be more involved in the day’s planning, the kids may perk up and say “I can help with that”. Take things day by day and chip a little bit off here and there. You can do it! Have faith!

Radhika M he wants to help his wife because he loves her deeply. He is a man who takes on all that he can to relieve his wife and family from as much as he can... he does for others. My husband is the same. I truly understand. It’s not because of anything else. It’s his love for his family. He tends to the things that are right there. The home project is a very large and overwhelming project. It hasn’t taken priority because his family has the basic necessities. Honestly, the house project fall short of the necessities, but there are so many other things he feels he needs to do and they don’t take as much time. It’s all based on the deep love and adoration he has for his wife and children. I applaud Art for sharing their difficult journey.

Leslie Castle all said and done - his wife NEEDS the house for her to thrive. And we all have to sacrifice for what we absolutely need. I love my family dearly too. And yet I do what is essential to ensure they are truly thriving and happy. He was given the funds and even quit his job. None of us have that luxury. And still excuse after excuse video after video. Sorry to be so harsh.

I feel your anxiety and understand Bri's frustration. You guys have analysis paralysis! LOL! Living in a camper with five kids is not ideal but a huge percentage of the world would think it was heaven. Having that huge barn for storage, a place for children to play and a ton of other uses is such a blessing. I don't see how moving would solve the problem. Focus on the positives and keep chipping away!

I agree with this comment to some degree, however winter will add an additional level of difficulty. You do what is best for you is do what is best for you and your family. You are truly more productive than most of your critics, I would venture to guess. All construction takes longer than most people would anticipate. I've been married 40 yrs to a contractor. Just do your best. It is good to have goals and time lines but they don't determine success or failure. Not one of us has full control of our lives and external factors. You are working on making things and yourself better. You score big points for that.

Please seriously consider hiring a general contractor to help get you over the first hump. We found a wonderful German Baptist man who with his father and son helped with our extensive renovation. One huge asset is their connections. We would try and try to get people to come out for bids and they just wouldn’t show up or we would never hear from them after. They did all the major stuff (additions on a 100 year old farmhouse and bringing the original up to code) and we did all the interior finishing. Still took us 2 years worth of weekends. Actually I still have some trim to do lol

Art, Lauren D. is on the right track! Check out All her points. That would get you the "biggest bang for your buck," on many matters. They would also get bldg. materials cheaper than you, too. With all the natural disasters & other destruction, all bldg. materials are skyrocketing in cost, On this point, I'm "serious as a heart attack" about the tenacity & varieties of MOLD. Even if you destroy every strain & every spore of them; there are many more strains ready to invade from the laden ground beneath the house, or on anything brought into the house. Even on your farm-work clothes. Mold is incidious when it comes to the innumerable ways it damages the mind, emotions, physical body - decreasing both quantity & quality of life. I know as a nurse, I'm preaching to the choir here. But molds have ever so slowly crept into my former home, & for about 4 years I've been deteriorating with ever-increasing maladies. I bought a new one a year ago, & the contractor has failed to fix a roof leak for over 6 mo. while mold started & grew, with increasing water damage every time it rains. During the first 3 mo. in my new home, many of my illnesses decreased, & I was feeling better & getting much stronger. But for the past 5 months, numerous doctors & specialists have been unsuccessfully "chasing" additional diagnoses & treatment protocols for my new acquired maladies. I've about come to the conclusion, after much research, that the majority of the problems are from molds. All the mental, medical, & physical symptoms are listed in the mold-causing symptoms & diseases. (Thank God for the Internet's access to excellent sources, such Mayo Clinic, John's Hopkins, federal government documents like NIH, Universities, etc) Each doctor has a limited view, based on his/her education & clinical experience. In recent years they're So busy that patients are shuttled in & out in only 15 mins. I think the molds in your house, & the troubles, work, delays, illnesses of family members are too costly overall, to try & salvage it. Sentimentality, attachment,. wishful thinking, holding onto a loved object are not worth the costs. Please very seriously consider, for the sake of the health & quality of life... Consider buying a new, or nearly new, single wide or double wide mobile home. There are manufacturers near you & you could have floorplan & other input, if you buy factory-direct. You all could be settled in within a month from purchase. The monumental job currently ahead of you would be off your plate. Then you all can have more time for physical, medical, & stress healing. You now know about water flow, lay of the land, etc. to pick the best location. Y'all can then more easily make future plans about what to do about the house, other buildings, grading, etc. while living on your own land, in a comfortable dwelling, with all the necessities - & without either or both of you renting, commuting from elsewhere to work on the farm, garden, & house. You can bless Bri & the children with your love equally, by releasing your desire to "do it all" for them. Please free up your mind, body, & time while having a home that is a mold-free, healthy environment.

@@carolynchadwick7867 Interesting and viable idea and solution. I would go for it too at this point for several reasons: too much stress on the family due to the living situation in a camper, saving on rent elsewhere, saving on materials due to covid spikes in prices on building materials, covid itself (with the 2 plus waves forecasted, which this time may lead to more spikes in prices on more than just building stuff but fuel, food, feed, etc. prices and even shortages), too much pressure and rush on the reno and not enjoying the process and (family) life as one could and probably much more. Also, they could get the prefab positioned somewhere a little bit away from the main house site and use it eventually as a guest or helper/worker house or a house for kids, when they get bigger and need more autonomy, etc. This way, the reno/building of the new house can take the time it needs to, 2-3 years maybe, with partial move in sooner?
@carolynchadwick7867
@carolynchadwick7867 4 жыл бұрын
@@katnip2u Absolutely, you're right. There are so many more pros than cons. And if they keep the camper, it could be used as the children's school. Or isolation living quarters for sick contagious family members & one parent caregiver. Just so many possibilities. And Art won't be exposing himself to the health-destroying mold spores during the peak predicted cold, flu, Covid-19 season, which the experts think will be worse than usual.

Great advice from older gentleman. If you listen and heed. “Accomplish one thing a day. End of year 365 things done.“ I used to be a project manager. Set realistic goals. Your task, your responsibility. Blame no one, get it done if you have to stay up all night. Your initial goal was clean out the house. 7 days. 8 hour days. 56 hours. Let’s say you have 10 rooms to clear. Adjust goal to one room finished each day. Modify goal to 10 calendar days. Not 14 but 10. When self employed you don’t get weekends off. You will feel happy and motivated when you finish in less than 10 days. Move shed. Probably a one day project but set it to 2 days. Get it done no matter what. Make a list of milestones. Break into projects. Break into tasks. Identify items you can work if you get a rain day that slows another project. This way you are always moving forward. Remember you quit your job to work on this. Think of this as a job. If you can’t do that. Go back to work and hire someone else to get this job done. A rent house is just another distraction. Right now it’s Bri’s job to figure out how she keeps other stuff going allowing you to focus on house build. She is soooo capable. Trust her. You guys can do this IF you want it bad enough. Last comment. Skip the life couch. Read your Bible, pray, listen and obey. Dude you tend to over analyze stuff. You really don’t need to pay someone to help you with this. This is your skill set. Now this was kind of harsh. But I was a no excuses project manager. Let me tell you what you are good at. Story telling. I would suck at that. So story tell and have the courage to hire someone else to do the house. Just an idea. Good luck. Prayers.

Im talking about a helping hand , didn't expect a high schooler to be a constructual engineer. But he can be a manual laborer/helper. I've been in construction all my life, so its not new to me, my husband is an actual engineer but works out of town for 6-8weeks at a time so I need a helping hand as in , fencing, re siding a 100 year old barn, building chicken coups etc etc. These are the things im talking about, which will give art the time to concentrate on other things, or get things done faster to move on to another task/project.and not only that it gives a kid the money to buy school clothes, have internet where as he didn't before. May give that kid a new prospective, it has my helper, he gets so excited when he learns something new, he takes pictures of before and after projects so he can show people and also said I will have them to add to my resume if needed. And when he graduates this year if what he learned from working with me helps him even a little bit get a full time job no one will be happier than me.

It is so refreshing seeing a man share his vulnerabilities so openly and honestly. It is critical in life to admit that you need help, and that you don't know how to move forward. I'm sure there is a reason you haven't hired a contractor, but it seems like you are taking on more than what you and Bri are able to do. Farming, youtubing, and parenting is already a full time job. Using precious funds to rent a house seems like a big sacrifice, but your mental well being is essential. In your next video will you explain why you aren't hiring out a construction crew? It seems like a very reasonable and much needed allocation of funds in order to move everything along faster, more efficiently, and safer. Just because you can do it on your own, doesn't mean that you have to or should.

As far as scheduling goes you might take a page out of Justins' book. Sometimes he seems obsessive about his schedule. "We have 15 minutes left in chore time. We might be able to get that fixed by then.", is the kind of thing you hear from him. Blocks of time set for chores, meals, projects, editing, etc. have to be realistic, and then adhered to. You can figure it out.

Not sure how moving will solve a lot of your problems. You would be spending more time driving to and from just to take care of the animals. More time wasted before getting started on working on the house. The cost of renting is going to eat up your savings and with the cost of wood and supplies going up. I understand that being in the camper isn’t ideal but it’s the most financially smart thing to do. I know large families that have had to sacrifice living in small spaces for a few years to reach a goal. Use the funds you have - get the house done by others where you can and then you can do the finishing yourself - but don’t feel you have to do it all yourself. It may save money but Bri and you might lose your sanity waiting longer and delaying. Rent cost and so does bussing back and forth - more gas, wear and tear on vehicles, risk of car accidents coming and going, animal issues and your not there etc etc. Use the money you have and get people in to do the job in a day or two while you do the other things in prep. Yeah it's going to be tough, honestly how is moving going to be better? It's like an employee saying, I'll do a better job with a new pickup. Well if you do a better job you get the new pickup. Changing and uncomfortable location doesn't change your problem. Problems tend to follow us. Your just adding another task to the ones you have now. Driving back and forth. That don't work least it didn't last time. I'm cheering for you, God bless 🙏

@it34102 No, Art quit his nursing job about a month ago to but full effort into the house, and has been coming up with excuses about why he can’t get things done. He has not prioritized the house. He has been making gardening videos, cutting down bushes, jacking up sheds, meeting with a life coach friend, etc. Anything except actually working in the house or contacting professionals. I can understand him being overwhelmed at the enormity of the job but I cannot accept the constant excuses. A LOT of money was donated to help rectify many of the home issues. Nothing said Art had to personally do the job by himself. IMHO all that has happened in the past month is a family is short their main income, nothing constructive has been done on the house, and I can only guess the money raised is being used to replace Arts lost income. I know this all sounds critical but I think it is time for Art to recognize not everyone is capable of everything. I see him as a caring husband and father, but his stubbornness on doing this house has now put Bri & the kids in the position of spending another winter in the camper. OR spending money earmarked for house repairs on rent ! As far as others vaporizing, I think you are forgetting about Miah of Roots and Refuse, while Jess held down their family and homestead. And the Rhodes welcomed them into their home for a break. One thing I have seen on these homestead channels is a willingness to help each other.

OK, I am just wondering again why not get a single wide three-bedroom home and place it where you have the camper? It will cost about the same amount as renting somebody else's home. The bonus is that you are still on your land. After you finish your remodel you can sell the mobile home and get the investment back; where if you rent it all goes to somebody else's pocket.

You didn't ask for my opinion, but I'm giving it because you chose to share with your viewers what you are doing, or not doing, as the case may be. So I do feel a sense of responding to your video. Please, please, I mean no disrespect. I say what I'm about to say because as the old saying goes, "Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees". I fear you aren't able to sensibly and productively go forward right now. Art, why are you changing diapers and helping Bri during "work hours"? Who did that when you were a nurse? You, Bri and the kids should consider your "work hours" as being away from the family the same way you were when you were a nurse and weren't available to be with. I do understand your wanting to help Bri when she and the kids were sick, but who would have done that when you were still working as a nurse? Would you have taken days off from your nursing job? You're spreading yourself way too thin and nothing gets done appropriately when that happens. Hire some help to at least get the house gutted. That will be a huge step in the right direction and will let you SEE PROGRESS, which the lack of is getting you down right now. As far as renting another house, why not just buy a big toaster oven and a couple of burners to cook with? That is way less trouble than renting another house. I've read the comments below and I do sense that while your readers are sympathetic with your plight, the reasons you're giving for not making progress are wearing on them. GET SOME HELP; that's what the money was for to help you get back in your house sooner. You'll be glad you did. Diane in NC

Deep down he knows this house build is huge and beyond his decision making and project management skills. He seems reluctant to spend the money donated to him for exactly this purpose. Art needs to hire a project manager, who knows the right contractors and get Bri and the kids back in their home.

Brilliant perspective, Jimmie! Art (and Bri) could just 'pretend' that he is still going into the nursing job and put all that time, instead, on the house project. (That is why he quit, isn't it? ??) Living with 5 kids in the tagalong is also part of 'the house project' I think... and maybe there just isn't time or energy to do ANY of the other usual 'productive, satisfying' stuff until the house is done..... UNLESS a manager is hired ... and even then?

Some good suggestions on here. Some criticism. I totally agree you should put a full sized kitchen stove in the barn to cook on. Not sure why you haven't already. Later, use it for canning. Also, the idea of setting regular hours daily, like a job, & sticking to them is brilliant. Four hours a day will accomplish so much. No kids just you ripping & tearing. If Bri can handle your 12 hr job she can surely manage 4 each day. Do school then. The thought of spending thousands on rental would make me heartsick.

From my understanding the point of the family going to the Rhodes for several weeks was so ART could focus on the house without them there and he did everything but work on the house. I'm beginning to think this won't happen. Execution seems to be a big issue as he has stated himself but now we are all seeing it. BRI can handle him not being there and working on the house but I'm not sure Art can focus and stay on the house project. I feel so sad for her as she has been more than patient and loving to him. I'd be very upset and angry at this point.

@@Beckaboo1982 My understanding about why they went to the Rhodes last winter had nothing to do with the (old) house. It was to do with Bri's eye problem right then. Being by the Rhodes gave them handy adult sitters for the children for when she had her multiple appointments, especially with Art at work. It also put her much closer to the various doctors, etc. Not to mention, immense psychological support during a very trying time. They never mentioned it, but I'm sure Rebecca and Bri were able to team up for some homeschooling, as well, each playing to their strengths and able to do more together than apart. Another thing they did mention, was that it put their family in better housing for the coldest months of winter. They mentioned how much of a problem they were having keeping the RV sufficiently heated.

This is as a beginning homesteader: I truly think that it’s time to find help. Especially with mold. While I understand wanting the aesthetic of your farm house the mold has likely permeated EVERYTHING. We have a small amount of mildew on a vaulted ceiling and we are a low income family who is STRUGGLING and are lucky it’s only mildew because at this point we can’t afford to have someone come in and redo the insulation and ceiling as well as the cross beam that goes across the roof because it’s bowing. In the grand scheme of things that only costs maybe 5k MAX but we just don’t have it. You al have been lucky enough to have a huge fundraiser for you. Use those funds to hire someone to come do it for you. We can’t do everything on our own. If I was lucky enough to have funds sent to me hiring someone to get it done in a week or two (or in your case a month or two) would be the biggest help to a homeschooling mother of two. Just hire someone. Get it done in a couple of months and cal it a day. Being grateful you have money given is making sure it’s wel spent.

And I for one, feel blessed I was able to donate to this beautiful family and will NEVER be sorry for doing so!

I absolutely love the honesty of your videos. Your struggle with setting goals and keeping them realistic as well as fluid is something I’m facing daily as I start my little urban homestead. I’m 56, single, and I bought 6 acres. My goal is to producing or bartering for the majority of my food in the next 5 years. Your os make me feel like the struggle is so worth it.

I’d connect the skids with a couple of 2x4’s. Then it takes the pressure off the cabin, puts it on the frame of the skid. And yes, I agree, you need a general contractor to run the job. I’d call at least 3 for estimates.

I didn't tell you before after I first watched this amazing video, but your self awareness and willingness to tell yourself and us what some of the difficulty in executing the steps for the house project impacted my life greatly. In am an Art without a Bri and struggle in some in the same ways. Your epiphany of a better way to proceed more effectively inspired me. Thank you.

It's time to suck it up princess. Get the power disconnected and a temporary 120v plug on a pole to power the camper, and start demolition. You're allowing yourself to create excuses. Brianna will prosper when she sees you making progress no matter what the current living situation is. You're only gonna delay more if you go and find a house to rent. The videos don't need their current level of spit and polish, we'll be just fine watching a bunch of time-lapse of you kicking down walls and filling the dumpster. What your friend Webb should have told you is to just START! If you got 5 minutes to sit and wallow, that's another wall you could have torn down. Holiday is over, stop talking, and begin!

OMG. I AGREE. I work more than full time hours as a nurse as well as run my own farm. Animals gardens and all food production and preserving is done by me. Any building and repairs also done by me! What is wrong with this family with 2 healthy adults that can't even work a whole day without fussing about it?

Okay, I'm speaking from the heart when I say this. I'm older and a little wiser so I speak from experience when I say it seems you are going backward instead of forward. I understand your job as a nurse limited you to time spent on the house. I also understand it was hard on Bri to take care of the farm while you worked, however, that is what you do in life, make sacrifices to achieve your goals. I became very concerned when you quit your job because you need that income instead of relying on KZbin and Go Fund Me. That job was a guaranteed income. Now with the cost of living so high and will become lots higher by the first of the year, along with lumber, I would be worried sick. Yes, it would be great if Bri had her big kitchen and living room added on, but, again, do you have the money for that? Now you say you are going to rent a house so Bri can have more room and she will be able to cook better. You will be on the road a good part of the time and nobody will be there to keep an eye on the animals so they will suffer as well. And it will affect any work being done on the house because you will be busy with the animals. My suggestion would be, get your nursing job back so that you will have a steady income which is most important. Hire the work out to have the drainage problem fixed. Tear the house down. Put a modular there instead to save time and money in the long run and buy one within your means. You're still a young couple and with hard, hard work, prayer, and dedication you will succeed with your dreams but not as fast as you want. Your plate is so full now and, in my opinion, by moving away from the farm could be detrimental to your marriage and your children. Too, maybe you would feel better about yourself by eliminating some of the pressure. Bri will also be making the sacrifices as well but in the long run, it will make life so much better for all of you. Teach your children to do more of the chores too. Couldn't she stay in the trailer for another few months knowing her home will be ready a lot sooner? Again, I say these things from my heart and I don't want to see you fail. This is a lot of pressure on a marriage.

Is there any way you can construct just a kitchen, like using a 12 x 12 building insulating it , heating it, and outfitting it with full size range and refrigerator and a large table /counter for work space and stay in the camper for everything else. It seems if you rent a house, which you already looked into and there were none close by, you will be spending more time running up and down the road, transporting the kids too as they have to continue their schooling, you will have even less time to work on the house and burning through cash for rent. This kitchen could be used later as an outdoor kitchen for canning, butchering etc. Just a thought. Have a Blessed day.

My thoughts as well! One of those pre made sheds you see everywhere, have a couple friends over and insulate, drywall and get some electric tied in from the house and have a kitchen in a weekend. Feed them a big spaghetti meal. Set it at a right angle to camper in a spot you can leave it there to be future processing area for your animals and veg or just a homeschool room.

You and Bri and doing a great job, you need to stop beating yourself up for not achieving your goals, great idea with your friend it will set you up for other goals on the homestead as well, get the family into a rented house nearby, and then you will be able to see the wood for the trees, I think sometimes we stress out so much about the stuff that we need to do that we become unable to do much of anything, get help if you can with either the animals or the build, I know you do have some help. and lastly take no notice of people who seem to think you are living your life for their pleasure x

Goodness, Art, you do talk about yourself a lot! (not a criticism, just an observation). Even if you only worked on your goals during the time you talked to us about yourself and all your consternation (and you could have told us all you did in about 5 min., not 20), you'd be a lot closer to your goals. Just do it! A little self-analysis goes a long way, but that much is exhausting! It even exhausted me, just listening to it! And, you two are so enabling of one another and all your "stresses" to the point that you will never get back in your house the way you are going. Seriously, if you just treated what you need to do like you had to treat your nursing job, it would all be done already! I cannot believe you just used house-hunting as an excuse to let yourself off the hook! I know exactly how that's going to go, you'll find a million reasons why you can't find something to rent for weeks or months, when it shouldn't take more than a week, maybe 2 (yes, I'm a native of NC, have lived in Charlotte all my long life and know your area very well). Get a realtor to help you find a rental, yes, they help with finding rentals. I love both of you, but you are grown-ups and need to handle this challenge like grown-ups. That has yet to happen.Just do it!

I love you, Bri & the kids. This is my opinion & given with love. I think renting a house is a bad idea. (1)It will be another disruption in your children’s lives. They need stability & routine. They are so happy on the farm. (2)An added expense. That money could be used for the renovation. (3)Who will do the chores? If Bri is at the rental with the kids, that would leave the chores to you. That will take a lot of your time away from working on the house. (4)Commute time. Again, taking time away from work on the house. Hook up a stove in the barn that Bri can cook & bake with. Treat the house renovation as your job. Go to work each morning & get busy. Maybe have lunch with Bri & the kids & then back to work. Get some help from friends to gut the house. Remember how quick that went at the Hollars, with so many friends helping. Hire a contractor. They will be in charge of the schedule, hiring people that are needed (they usually have people that they work with), get contractor prices on materials (especially useful since lumber prices have risen so much), etc. The sooner you get started, the sooner y’all will be in your new house. I have really thought about y’all’s situation a lot. I am making these suggestions with love in my heart. I hope you will take this in the spirit that it is given. I hate seeing your family not able to live & enjoy life to the fullest. My thoughts & prayers are with y’all. Blessings, Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇨🇱🇺🇸👍❤️🥰🙏

My heart is going out to you and your precious family! I lived in a camper for 4.5 years...I built my shell of a house 7 years ago.....it’s still not finished...but , I’m grateful I’m debt free, live in a dry safe home, my animals surround my property and I have my little homestead. Sometimes it feels like a battle, emergencies arise, life just happens. Life can be full of ups and downs, happy times and not so happy times...sometimes it can be devastatingly crushing...but in the end, God has an amazing plan for y’all!
