I'm not particularly an expert on Plymouth but most of those old engines that set for a long time lose compression like that, if you put a couple of teaspoons of gear oil in each piston it should give you enough compression to start it up, once you do that and run it through a few heat cycles you should get your rings back and have compression again.

@@arthurroosa9197 It started the first time, so it did have some compression. The second time, it sounded at times as if it was firing too soon, trying to drive the engine backwards. It only takes about a spoon full of gas to prime the engine. Any more and you flood it. The low compression may because the excess gas washed the cylinders. Oil the cylinders and see if the compression improves.

I am speechless: I always thought that a car starting that easily after many years of neglect was a Chevy thing. I saw now, that a mopar can also come back to life very easily. I think it is more likely to happen with a simple straight six.
@josephg41
@josephg41 Жыл бұрын
Chevy's in my experience either start straight up quite easily or they are hell on earth. Had a '65 C10 283 that sat for 30 years, started up after new points, rotor plugs and was great. Then I had a '63 Impala SS 327 that sat for 25, did all the same stuff, it even had more compression, but the sucker is still fighting me after a month. I know they are near identical engines, but the 327's always give me a hard time for whatever reason.

It has a 2-speed powerflite automatic transmission, there was a 3-speed automatic available as well, called torqueflite + the basic 3-speed manual transmission. With that golden "V" in the grille she usually should be a 318cui V8 (or the V has been added at some point). Watch out, at some point she might even try to kill or hurt you...and I know what I'm talking about. Oh man, that growling starter brought back memories when I first started up my 58 Plymouth. I had this very similar situation, ran great and let it sit for months. No start. These don’t like sitting for long periods of time. Marvel mystery oil down the holes, clean and relube the starter (helps get more rpm’s out of it) and dribble in 2 cycle mixed fuel down the carb for starting, any mix is fine. Straight gas will just wash out your cylinders. Once it does run, try to get some heat cycles into it to help loosen/seal up the rings. Also might want to look into replacing that carb with the correct unit. The one currently in your car is off an early 1950’s Plymouth. It’ll work, but it’s not correct for the later model 230 flatty. Love the car as much as mine. Hope to see more of yours! Parts wise, Big M and Dave are the way to go! As well as the 1958 Plymouth FINatics group.

Needs a Golden Commando 350 installed if you can find one for it, even though it's a Sedan and not a Hardtop it's for sure a car worthy of restoration.

I want to see more of it! Try some thick oil down the cylinders to help bump the compression up and try again. If it starts let it run and blow the cob webs away. It should help and free up the rings after a while. And keep it original! Love this car!

Definitely need more on this car. Let it sit with marvel mystery in the cylinders. Either way it would probably need a redbuild. I'd either do stock or make it another challenger series. Very cool car. Can't wait for more content

I agree with everyone else, add a little oil, Marvel, something to help seal the rings to get it started and then let it get up to temp. Get a few heat cycles into the motor and put her around the yard to get those rings moving again. I would like to see more on her and start getting those parts on the car like a brake booster and a new window.
@ronniehenley2564

Try adding a little oil to each cylinder to get more compression to make it fire up. Maybe some heat in it will bring the rings back around.

Yep, and pull it into the garage and let it dry out some. I’d like to see it get washed and waxed. And then since the lights work put a tire or two and brakes and at least drive to the ice cream stand with your buddy’s Plymouth. It’s a hot summer.

Pop the head off. Pretty easy to do. Or pull the side cover. I think you might have some sticky valves that are slow to return. Funny it ran fine the day before however. I did the same thing on a 1957 Plymouth wagon in one of my videos. Ended up breaking a valve off and having to redo all the valves in the second video. Great cars! Good luck!

Get it running again, leave the body as it is. If I had to guess, I'd say the low compression is probably the valves- either stuck or carboned up so they don't seal shut. Either way, a healthy 360/727 would be a welcome improvement.
