chasing down a vw lead that sat parked 34 years after getting rear ended at a stop sign,

I always enjoy your video's. No bull, straight to it, and you have great common sense about everything. and your a gentleman. (you remind me of my father, R.I.P., who had a love of old cars and a genuine respect for everyone) Too many car video's out there that are shot by pompous wanta be car guys with bottomless pockets destroying old cars in the name of trying to restore them. Thanks for just being an all round decent person with a talent for all things with motors and age. it's appreciated more than you know .Peace

This reminds me so much of my first experience with my Beetle, when I was 15. There was a neglected 1970 Beetle (hardtop) sitting in a driveway down my street that I had been eyeing for years. When I was 11, I had written the owners a letter saying that I wanted to wash their car in exchange for money, since I was saving up to buy a real Beetle of my own and since I didn't like seeing theirs get neglected. I never heard back until 4 years later when I saw a "For Sale" sign on the house. I knocked on the door and inquired about the car, which by this point had weeds growing through it. They instantly remembered who I was, even though they had lost the letter. They sold it to me that day for $100. My dad and I inflated the tires just like in this video and pushed it home, which was right down the street. It was such a surreal feeling knowing that this car that I had been eyeing for so many years now belonged to me. Almost a decade later, I still own it. It now runs (with a new rebuilt engine) and I take it on grocery runs at every opportunity I can. But it has never received the cosmetic restoration I hoped to give it, largely due to the fact that my family doesn't own a garage nor do I know anyone who has space they'd be willing to lend me. I've thought about selling it since I know that I won't be able to give it the love it deserves, but part of me knows that if I do, I'll never find it again. What's peculiar about your new Beetle (congrats, by the way!) is that even though it was parked in 1979 when it was only nine years old, it had already been repainted. Why would a car less than a decade old need to be repainted?
@mustie17 жыл бұрын
thanks for sharing your memories, that was a great story, as far as paint it was cheap back then, what part of the country is the car in ?
@NESherv7 жыл бұрын
Mustie1 Mine is in California, but it was cheaply repainted by the original owner too at some point in the same color, Yukon Yellow (no primer used though)! However, it was on the road from 1970 to about 2003, and sat until 2007 when I bought it. It's no show car! :)
@mustie17 жыл бұрын
at least the weather in your area is more forgiving then here, and show cars are over rated, your always worried about who will scratch it.

Yeeep! it's like pure magic every time you get to start these barnfinds/garage getaways. And the hard truth is that these cars shouldnt even be around anymore. I bought a 1958 bug that had not been moved or started from the old haybarn that it had been parked in for 42 years....new battery and fresh gas and it started and run like it was a teenager driving to the prom. Just pure love for these old magic engenering marvels. / Rolf, Sweden

Check the leakdown to check the rings, valves, and head gaskets. Adjust the valves. Change the oil and screen. Change the plugs. Check the distributor cap. Check EBAY for body parts. Adjust the clutch. Christine is her name. She keeps coming back! That's why she was in that garage.

Michael Ramm Nobody is talking about where the car was made. I said VW Made the Best tops, Meaning the glass window, insulated roof and headliner. It doesn't matter who made it or where, it's still a VW Convertible top. And yeah I've owned 6 Karmann Ghias, all convertibles.
