I volunteered at a stable “in exchange” for horse back ridding lessons but… yeah that didn’t happen. I was there for almost 6 months and the promises for regular lessons were never met. But I did learn some important things and I loved the time with the horses! While I had it… the longer I was there the less chore things they had me do with horses. But I’m thankful for what I got! Thank you for another fun video! I’m praying for you and your horse journey! You’re doing great!💛

Ok, I had a similar situation and I I need to know... was I scammed? I would work a few days a week, from 12PM to about 7 or 8PM, and rarely got the chance to ride for a short amount of time (15-20 mins). And why does it seem like a very common issue, barn facility owners promising regular lessons but never delivering on that promise?

This was so me when I was younger! 😂😂😂😂😂 I worked as a stable hand when I was a kid in exchange for riding lessons. Eventually I was exercising the boarded horses too. I had to do all my homework and have good grades in order for my parents to drive me to the barn and pick me up every afternoon and evening during the school year and 7-7 during the summer. I’m pretty sure some child labor laws were violated 😂 I got to know the full care board horses really well. I felt bad for several of them because their owners came to the barn only once a week for their lesson. I’ve always wanted my own horse but I said I wouldn’t have a horse unless I could keep them on my property. We have a small homestead farm we are building up and I have two beautiful mustang mares now. Dreams do come true and it was worth every hour of work I did as a kid and younger woman.

If you are thinking about working in exchange for lessons or board, calculate 10$ per hour of work and then check what a lesson or board would cost. A good rule of thumb imo is 2-4 hours of work for a 1 hour lesson. It depends on your area and barn of course. If you are working more than 6 hours for a lesson, that person is taking advantage of you and you would be better off getting a mini job and paying with the money you earn.

Spot on! I’ve been reading the comments and people, especially kids don’t realize how much they are being short changed. I used $10/hour as a rule for kids and $12-$15/hour for adults depending on their experience. Around here, lessons range from $55 to $90/hr depending on the expertise of the instructor. $10x6hours = 1 lesson with lower level instructor. $15 x 6 = 1 lesson with very experienced instructor.

Me and my mom volunteered at a western barn over a summer. I helped with kids camp from 8 to 3, 5 days a week while my mom was at work. The owner was always late and had 2 kids. I was stuck having to deal with 2 young kids while doing the kids camp all by myself because the owner just sat their and watched me basically babysit his kids and watch the kids from the camp. At the end of the summer me and my mom stoped volunteering their because the manager called me a lire, her kids bullied me and it felt like her family was attacking me and my family. But we love the owner’s sister and mom that did all of the lessons so when they moved to another barn we have been going their and taking lessons. They have been teaching me very well and brought me to my first rodeo this summer.

Omg yes this is so true. The hay day one is so funny because we all know they were acting sick because nobody likes hay day XD. I have not volunteered to work at a barn but I volunteered to be a helper at my riding place. Basically I just helped out around the barn and it was a camp for kids to learn about horses so I also had to watch kids. These are the things I did: mucking, sweeping the isle, grooming horses, teaching kids how to ride and lead horses, set up courses for the kids to go around on or leading the horse (like poles, cones, etc), watched kids, tried to catch a mouse in the loft (which never got caught as of what I know), watched horse shows/movies, cleaning inside the lobby, playing games with the kids, riding hobby horses around the arena jumping fences (lol it was my idea with my friends), giving parents of the kids a tour around the facility, and finally getting loads of crying kids out of the loft because there was a bat that came flying out of the ceiling (then all the kids were like “wait I left this and this upstairs” so I had to run up and down stairs with blisters on the back of my feet from my boots getting people’s things. It was an amazing experience and I would have loved to do it next year but they stopped camps and I’m so sad. I love volunteering even through the struggles, so seriously if you get the chance then do it you learn so much and have a ton of fun!

Fun story: in the 70s I used to work at a stable part time. The manager said I could ride with her, but that only happened once. I loved horses so I didn't mind it - probably stayed throughout the summer then quit before the winter season. :-) But the coolest part was when Jackie O. came to the stable to meet up with a friend! Oh, yeah. I "volunteered" for one of my mom's co-workers one summer. I was supposed to be able to ride in exchange, but there was literally no place to do so except for a round pen that was completely filled with 5-6 foot tall thorny weeds, which I eventually worked my ass off to clean out. She had me strip her long neglected stalls a few times a week because she never mucked them. Mow her lawn, clean and reorganize the feed and tack rooms, wash all her winter blankets. She even had me start halter training a foal she had. I never did get around to riding as I quit going over when she got fired from her job (very shortly after I had cleaned up the round pen). I didn't really want to have to hang around with her.

I worked at a barn before I got my horse in exchange for learning to barrel race and take a barrel horse to shows and our county fair. I eventually got my horse Storm as an untouched two year old and kept working there. Eventually I moved barns to get free board at a friends place but they always had way to many horses for the amount of land they had and there were allot of incidents, (horses escaping, extremely moldy hay, accidentally being left in stall overnight without water), so I moved again, to where I am now! I can work off board, so little drama it’s like living in a dream, hay is good, riders watch out for each other, (and each other’s horses 😂) and there are always new opportunities! Then the others galloped to the top field that was churned up for XC and were so muddy. I used to volunteer at an Arabian Breeding stable. It wasnt a huge one, even though it had some really well known purebred Arabians there. When i first started it was 20 hours of volunteer work for a lesson, but it was fine cause i would help with the special needs lessons that they did there, so i would get my 20 hours in 3-4 weeks. (i only went up 1-2 days a week) But then the owner changed it to 30 hours, and the barn manager (she did like EVERYTHING) taught the lessons, and she would have to push them back since she was busy with things outside of the barn. I never complained even though the barn manager felt really bad and would always try to make up for it. But the thing is, i wasnt there to ride, i was there to learn how a show stable worked. They never took advantage of me, and i was very grateful for that. Heres my story: they did start to sell everything last summer because the owner was retiring, and he just couldnt get anyone to buy this one horse he had. (partly because you couldnt even catch it) All i knew about this horse is that it lived on the huge pasture behind the barn, and nobody touched the horses out there. So i started to work with it, and i was able to do a heck of a lot with it, even though the breeder/owner couldnt even get near it unless i was holding the horse. WELLLLL, i found out this horse was 14 years old and hadnt been touched since it was 1. So i decided to buy it to see what i can do with it WITHOUT the restrictions the owner put on us. long story short, i did more with that horse in 7 months than the owner did in 14 years. So i sold it and now its a ranch horse that loves people and isnt scared of them anymore. It took a lot of befriending to get that horse back to a nice horse, but i mean, i loved the experience.

I volunteered at a horse rescue a few years ago and on orientation day they told all us newbies that they'd be teaching everything they could so we could learn about horse care and do more for the horses there than just mucking... The most I got after repetitive asking and constantly showing up and doing more than I was asked to was 1 rushed "how to put on a halter" lesson and 1 "pick up this hoof and put it back down" moment during a hoof picking demo.... It hurt craving the learning so much and never being given chance. I understood that I shouldn't be trying to touch the legs of abused paso finos or that OTTBs can be a lot to handle, but I wanted to learn how to care for them, how to help them.. It's a great rescue and they do what's best for the horses, but I felt so overlooked and heartbroken. At least I can't complain about finishing the mucking and getting to stand in a paddock with horses that are starting to enjoy human contact... The moment a particularly scared gelding starts asking for scratches or a mare lips some hay out of your hand all happy and gentle... The people made it hurt, but the horses made it better.

Before I had my big horses( I have had minis my whole life) I volunteered at a boarding barn near where I live. The purpose of me going there was to gain experience around the “big ones” before I got my own. The deal was that I would volunteer there for a little bit and then once I got the hang of everything I could start getting paid. However, even after I got the hang of everything and could do 99% of it on my own I still never got paid. I was expected to come every Saturday and work for 4-5 hours and I would have to call off in advance if I couldn’t come in. I worked there for about six months. The final straw was when one morning me, the owner, and another girl who was working in exchange for board were cleaning stalls and I was the only one working. The other two just sat there for over a half hour and just watched me do everything by myself. That day the owner also yelled at me for spooking the horse that she was leading even though it was actually her fault ( another story for another time) . After that I was like, “ Nope…I’m done.” and I never went back😂 I didn’t even really “get experience” around them because they only had me clean stalls( which I already knew how to do). Needless to say I didn’t get much out of it

@@slamminsam6xoxo Oh that sounds really rough, I'm sorry to hear that! The barn I am at is business-like but casual and so far I haven't noticed any competitiveness (I should add they do not teach jumping, which could be irrelevant but I feel like is one thing riders get very competitive over). Their main goals for teaching are building self-confidence and self-esteem in riders (and having fun), with an emphasis on balanced riding, which as a beginner rider I really appreciate. I don't know your situation, but maybe you should try a different barn, I've tried a lot of barns I felt pretty meh about and one I felt unsafe at, before finding my barn now, and I don't regret it for a second!

I started back in 1992 volunteering in exchange for my lessons. Thankfully I was at a wonderful barn where I wasn’t taken advantage of. I learned many valuable lessons in horsemanship and life in those couple of years there.

Last week and this week we were doing summer camp I usually just volunteer for fun and it’s really cool to learn about the horses digestive system and their feed!

I got to be a dream volunteer once lol. I was helping tack, groom and work horses. Originally they were just having me tack and groom and muck, but after a few lessons they started having me work the kid ponies that were out of shape. after a while they bumped me up to the more intermediate horses and had me not muck anymore. Eventually I was riding horses that the head trainer wouldn't even ride and I didn't even get lessons. I learned a lot, so im still grateful, but what bugged me is that later on after a small fallout, I started riding with a different stable. I heard later that trainers from the previous barn were saying that I was a crappy rider and that I am super timid... even though I was riding horses that would rear over backwards :( I obviously still had things to learn... I had a strong western background and had been riding for 6 years, but I was new to jumping, so I was still figuring all that out. I still wish I could have actually got my lessons... the trainer was very experienced and a super cool rider. :(((((

My mom got so bored at my lessons that she mucked a tonnn of stalls.. there went any video of me riding 🙄 It was my first time jumping 4ft and my mom was like “oh I missed it cause I was mucking stalls, I have to get my exercise :)” JSOWKJSSOWOIWJEJE so frustrating.

I've been working for my lessons since I started taking them. My trainer is super nice, and while I do earn my keep, I've never felt terribly taken advantage of. Plus, I get to learn a lot.

I was volunteering for a few years at a horse riding school. We would be there from 8am to 5pm every Saturday and had a lesson in exchange. It was really chill and I loved it there for the most part. I even loaned horses there for a bit. It was good because I got experience and I'm not able to have that on my CV but at the same time I defo could've learnt more while i was there

I’ve been volunteering for a while now. But I just started intern. 3 months ago. And on my first day as interning. I put the wrong horse in the wrong pasture. + I put the wrong halter on them 😂. I knew the horses. I just forgot where they went. But good thing the horse that she was with didn’t hurt them. Same with themself hurting the other horse.

I do chores but not for lessons. I have 2 horses that live at the barn I do chores. So if I clean 10 stalls a day plus my horses stalls, I get half off the amount for board.

I volunteer at a horse treking and quad biking place there are 10 horses and 12 bikes I go there 1-3 times a week and I wax saddles and bridles, muck out, wash quads, make feeds, cook barley and every day I get a free ride. At the moment the owner has a mare that she brought in febuary this year and the second day she had it it got a huge gash in its leg so only this week the mare (Willow 15.3hh) has been able to be ridden so I am teaching her the trails so I get to go out on the by myself. the owner doesnt think this counts as the ride so this week I have done 2 - 3 rides a day ( even though I love the gelding i ride pete 17.2hh xrace horse he has a canter to die for) I love the owner being able to trust me to take out her green mare on a 4 hour ride.

I worked for my lessons and the person was really nice. I work for a while on a Saturday and then got a riding lesson sometimes on Saturday or on the Monday. But then my trainer had to go somewhere else so I could not work for them anymore. I love the video! And your hair looks really good in braids!

I did that😂 I never got my ridding lessons tho, and discovered the nasty stuff of the barn by talking to the workers and all: both horses and employees overworked, very irregular paydays, the horses werent seen individualy and some were obviously hating their time there...after more than a year i had enough, no way of changing the place😭 Before that place i was at a small barn that was very nice, and everyone had to help a little...loved it, it gave everyone a closer view if living with horses, something i wish more barns teached👍

Omg this whole video was me for about 3 1/2 years then all the unmet promises started frustrating me and I felt very taken advantage of so I just started distancing myself and doing less and less I am still at this barn but I pay for my board instead of work for it I actually like paying for it more so I know it’s fair for me!! Thanks for the video I thought I was the only one that got taken advantage of but your video shows that it happens to a lot of us unfortunately 😢

I'm currently volunteering at a horse rescue barn. I get to go on a hack about once a week (not every week though, sometimes there's just no time for hacks) and I train a young horse that has been abused. I try to get on his back at least once a week and do groundwork the rest of the week with him. There's nobody else who looks after him so he's basically my horse by now and I don't have to pay anything for this. The rescue barn is my second home and the people there my second family, i love it with all my heart. Only problem: it's a one hour drive away from my home..

i've been volunteering at my local stable for a few months now (I'm trying to get somewhere to where I can pay for lessons, but I don't know enough yet) and I've been worked SO hard. One time, I had to work with another clueless volunteer tacking for lessons and all! It was super stressful, lol...

After over a year of volunteer work I was offered the opportunity to retrain a rescue pony who came into our barn, the barn manager was super helpful in coaching me and he (the pony) has been approved for permanent adoption as a club horse at my horse club so I’m pretty stoked of how well we have both done and to have been offered that learning experience

So I'm a 12 year old girl and in 2021 I started "volunteering" at a really awful barn, but I was happy and made a good friend. But I had to be there right smack at 8:00 am and I would stay there until 6:30 pm. The owner wa super mean and she made us do everything and she wouldn't let us have breaks, but I wasn't so used to horses back then so I was really happy. ❤ I love your videos sm!!!

I can totally relate to this video haha it’s so true to be careful about being taking advantage of. I have worked at multiple horse stables and some managers can be tricky. Thankfully the one I’m working at right now has been awesome and they let me ride whenever. Get to know the barn owner or manager before you work for them.

I get cheap riding lessons and spent the rest of the day poo picking, feeding, sometimes leading horses down from the barn, and taking the Shetland over poles which he jumps 10 times bigger than he is supposed to 😂 I don't have to do the chores but they are fun and nobody seems to understand!? Oh and I also poo pick for a neighbour and she insisted on paying me when I was happy to do it for nothing cos it's fun! But I'm autistic sooooo... that could explain a lot! I've been doing this for a year and I'm still not bored!
