Just found your channel,question what is the reason for the spacers when you are setting your vertical posts, any reason why your post cannot sit at the bottom of the u bracket

OK, I'll ask. Why are the posts up on blocks? You didn't address that on the video. If it's to keep them off the concrete, they are pretty high.

No, it's because the customer wanted to pour a concrete floor later. So we needed to keep the posts from being encased in concrete. I don't recommend doing it that way.

So if the post was on the finished slab would you still put something treated under it or is the thickness of the metal bracket enough to stop the post from rotting that close to the concrete?

No, the U bracket will hold the post off the floor by 1/4 inch. Keep in mind though this is for an interior application. If the posts are on the exterior, but under a roof say for a pavilion or an open porch you will want to apply a preservative to the post bottom before you install it.

Thanks Doc, I was scratching my head on that one too! And BarnGeek, the responses were great. I'm completely re-designing my pole barn now after watching your videos, very helpful. Thank you!

Below you mentioned treating the wood. If I were to build the barn, using the upper portion as my home, would it be best to just treat each post? Also, how far up should the treatment be applied? Is using old motor oil okay? I know that's what folks used to do.

No, as a house, I wouldn't recommend treating the wood at all. As long as the post is above ground, and doesn't stay wet, it can last a thousand years. Contrary to modern thinking, natural wood doesn't just rot away. It takes moisture and fungus to rot wood. I would also recommend never putting wood in the ground, even treated wood will rot away in the ground in about 40 years. There is one product for treatment, that I would recommend using if you are using the wood outside, or you want a weathered look. I will link to it in the next comment.

I just found your channel. If you don't recommend blocking the post up for the floor to be poured at a later date. What would your recommendation be?
@BarnGeek7 жыл бұрын
I would recommend pouring the floor and the piers before building the barn. Ideally, but if you must pour the floor at a later date, then this is a good method.

Okay, I can't be the only person who noticed this young fellow in the slippers, or slides or flip flops, whatever they call them where you're from. OMG!!!

obviously you cant read the warning sticker on the basket that say max weight and this is not a crane
@BarnGeek7 жыл бұрын
The beams don't weigh that much, we never exceeded the weight capacity of the machine. It is designed to carry men and materials. If you don't like using a man-lift as a crane, then don't do it!
