My grandma used to sing us this song to make us stop crying. She did a little sailor dance during the sailor part.

And, maybe, warning you a little about what is out there. Great grandma! There is a fair amount of those cleverly disguised warnings about. Have a close look at Beatrix Potter’s ‘The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck’. Written for the kids, but...

Yeow! Bix in 1924, playing with the Wolverines, was advanced over his contemporaries, the NORK, ODJB, Oliver's Creole Jazz, Jelly Roll Morton,etc. and here he is in 1930, nearing the end of his life,playing a sizzling, red-hot chorus over Gene Krupa's drums that swung so hard, even Benny Goodman couldn't top it.
@weevie83311 жыл бұрын
Came here from Dajae's "You Got Me Up" Underground Goodies Mix - 1993. If Benny ever knew, it would be intriguing to know how he felt about being sampled nearly 60 years after the fact. Or Gene, for that matter.

The last line at the very end was pronounced "He'sh Barnacle Bill the Shailor" -- the way a drunkard would pronounce "sailor." Not saying that the singer was drunk; more likely they were parodying the stereotype of the "drunken sailor." Thank you for uploading this; it's the best version of this song, in my opinion.
@cha54 жыл бұрын
Arnie Quis I thought in that very last bit there it sounded like he was saying “Barnicle Bill th’ shitterrrrrrrr.”🥴 But in a completely plastered drunk as a skunk manner.

That was the all mighty Joe Venuti and one of his pranks.
@josemarialacarra85542 жыл бұрын
In Weirdo magazine n. 9, there's a story about Joe Venuti, by Tom Bertino, in which are told several pranks that Venuti did or used to do, being one of them the time he joined the vocal chorus in this piece to sing 'Barnacle Bill the SHITHEAD'.

The old version, this one, has much more originality in the 1930s than the nasty versions we sang in the 1960s.

In case anyone missed it or can't make it out, the gruff bass voice at the very end of this record is that of violinist Joe Venuti, saying "He's Barnacle the s**thead." It's a wonder that got past the censors in 1930 and that the record was issued. Might have been lost...

My husband used to sing an R-rated version of this to me. We just listened to the X-rated version from waaaay back when. The "fair young maiden" is sweet and G-rated, the sailor is crude, sexist and mysogynistic.

Your point being?

I think that version was a comic song - that is, you are supposed to laugh at Bill for being a lowlife. We sung the x version in summer camp. It was gross, but not as you describe. What is your version?
