James Barnes is a remarkable man, teacher, composer and musician. As an undergraduate at the University of Kansas in the first half of the 1980s, I had the chance to play his newest music, often conducted by him. He was a ball of fire, even on the marching field!

What a masterwork and a half. Well played by one of the best in the world! I performed Barnes' Third Symphony with the Western Australian Wind Symphony inside the Perth Concert Hall in February where I got to play the opening Tuba solo. This was part of a themed concert about Loss and Grief, which was fitting because while we were rehearsing for that concert my cousin suddenly died.

One of my favorite pieces for band! Wonderful! The personal story of Barnes attached to this piece is remarkable.

Program notes by James Barnes - “I began to work on it in earnest at a very difficult time in my life, right after our baby daughter, Natalie, died. This symphony is the most emotionally draining work that I have ever composed. If it were to be given a nickname, I believe that "Tragic" would be appropriate. The work progresses from the deepest darkness of despair all the way to the brightness of fulfillment and joy.” “Three days after I completed this symphony, on June 25, 1994, our son Billy Barnes was born. If the third movement is for Natalie, then the finale is really for Billy, and our joy in being blessed with him after the tragic death of his sister.”

@@brucekuehn4031 Yes! Thanks for sharing the program notes. I performed this with the Utah Wind Symphony under Scott Hagen years ago, and it was a truly memorable performance. The piece is incredibly evocative!

“Who is this coming from the city of Bozrah in Edom? Who is this so splendidly dressed in red, marching along in power and strength?” It is the Lord, powerful to save, coming to announce his victory.

Thanks for choosing such horrible acoustics to record the classic Barnes's Symphony No. 3, and trying your very best to make the United States Marine Band sounding as bad as possible. I'm sure it'll be remembered fondly for posterity. Bravo!

ibuwan88, I think you are being too harsh, and also sarcasm is rather inappropriate if you want others to take you seriously. Having said that, I too was disappointed in this performance. Much of it was rather sloppy; I noted many instances where players were not together, and many bad notes played by various players (mostly brass), and one player kept botching the same note over and over. This band has had better moments.

Conductor is awful. Seriously, how does this guy get this job?
