Clifton Williams was my counterpoint professor 1966-68, at the University of Miami, and a friend. He was kind enough to guest conduct his Variation Overture at my first job as a band director

My wife and I were at the summer music camp in Miami in 68. We met him several times then I got to go on his last sunmer Band touir to Eastern Europe in 73. He was starting to have a lot of back pain then. Later he knew it was cancer. He was a wonderful man. great composer, It is wonderful he was your prof. and friend. wow. My Band Dir. there was Bill Miller, you may have known him. ( he was one of Henry Fillmores students.)

Played this in my junior year (last year) of high school, one of my favorites ever Just remembered we also played it in the Kauffman, very beautiful stage, entire hall us a giant organ, really cool place. We’re playing in Carnegie Hall this year, haven’t gotten the music for there yet but our director has it selected

Hell yeah, we played this in high school state ensemble. I had never played with a group as high calibre and listening to this very special song in my heart nearly brought tears to my eyes. Number 3 forever.

I played the bass trombone on this song for my final holiday concert in my highschool's symphonic band today! I had a blast practicing and performing it! My favorite part has to be that final trombone glissando in section O. I love how it interupts the entire band playing together , and it sounds so cool! I had trouble with the glissando from 6th position F natural to 5th postion F sharp for a couple months, but I eventually got it down for the concert! Great piece, would 100% play again!

Clifton Williams had his own 'musical language' of sorts like some composers do to easily indentify them by; can always tell his great pieces even if some aren't as well known....This is a fairly well-known work of his and is played often-bravo!!!!

Always love to hear this tune. When I was 16, in a band festival, Meridian, MS, it was the most difficult that I had played to date. Taught me so very much as a 2nd year learner. Still get those great memories. What an experience. May the goodness of "band comradery" always be with us....

Just played this in the honor band I was involved in this recently. It is by far one of the hardest pieces I’ve ever played and it was so much fun. I played 2nd alto and it was such a fun part. Probably the best piece I’ve ever played and I want to play more like it. My favorite part is from 6:00 onwards
Enjoyable Fiesta!! Wonderful sounds.. Enjoy it.. thank you US Marine Band

We were blessed to have C.Williams work with us on this piece, for HS State competition. The judges had given us all superior ratings, but in the comments... " well done, but we don't feel this piece was played as the composer intended". We got the biggest kick out of that!😂😂

That would be a great theme for a halftime show. I knew (Jim) Clifton Williams Went to Europe in 73 with his Young American Musicians Abroad. group. He knew how take a large group on a trip. And if things went a little stray, he sent his wife in to straighten things out. You did not want to tangle with her. She was remarkable.

Lacking in interpretation. The playing is top notch but the conductor has absolutely no feel for this type of music. It is a Latin dance setting and should be highly stylized--not so carefully placed like an etude as to drain all the joy and fun out of it.
@fenderbetterscream24 күн бұрын
This is the best band in the country, I’m sure the director knows what he’s doing, don’t talk smack on him for something you could never do.
