“Every reader can have a different opinion at the end between admiration and disgust and nobody's wrong.”
The Art Thief by Michael Finkel is the stranger-than-fiction true story of Stéphane Breitweiser’s infamous and incredible career as - you guessed it, one of the world’s most notorious art thieves. Finkel joined us to talk about his own interactions with Breitweiser, the notion of obsession, how we should start viewing art and more with guest host, Allie Ludlow.
This episode of Poured Over was hosted by Allie Ludlow and mixed by Harry Liang.

Just finished reading this book last night. I highly recommend it. Some parts might lull a bit, but it soon rapidly gallops, leaps up and carries you along with the breathtaking escapades. This is not solely about art, but the act of the flawed human psyche, warped maternal love, redemption and ultimately (depending on your personal conclusion) acceptance of a tragic life. In the end, I will like to think and hope “the master art thief” is able to take back some time and embark on a possible happy life.

This was an interesting book to read. Sometimes you want to abandon it, but you resist knowing that the rest of the story will amaze you. And, it doesn’t disappoint you!

I keep wondering if his father's collection was acquired legitimately or if Stephane inherited a "deeper" influence from his father...

The book was delivered to me on a Thursday afternoon. I finished reading through it, that Sunday. I, at first thought Stephane was cool. Then, I realized he wasn't cool, at all.

I can imagine the artists of all those great and irretrievable works thinking that this little toad and his filthy mother didn't deserve any attention at all. And they are quite right.
