There was actually a scene filmed in which Andy and Barney are on the porch and both are singing. It was quite obvious in that scene that Barney COULD carry a tune. He had to lose that ability for other episodes!

People have a very hard time telling people they can't sing. Aunt Bee was depicted as overall a fine cook. Thus, it became difficult for people to tell her she wasn't good at making a particular dish.

This actor was Olan Soule, who also had credits on My Three Sons (Sudsy's father in early seasons) and as an explosives expert on Dragnet in the 1960s.

He played Ray Pinker of the Crime Lab on the Dragnet Radio show in 1950. then on radio and TV versions in '51 forward and still played the character occasionally up to the end of the 2nd iteration of the show in '70 or '71. He literally pops up everywhere.

@@FirefighterSEIN 🌿 Never a waste of time to look up an actor from the Andy Griffith Show episodes. "Lawman Barney" had two farmers intent on setting up shop too near Mayberry. Barney stood up to the bullies and finally ran them off. I looked up Orville Sherman, the tallest farmer, and found out he was related to the famous Civil War General, W. T. Sherman as well as Janis Joplin, Orson Welles, Andy Devine and some other well- known stars❣️

This was a great episode but the funny thing is, whenever Barney and Andy would sing on the front porch, Don Knotts had no problem singing a really good harmony. Unforgettable, classic television.

I was in the children's choir at my church and in the front row near the microphone. Then, puberty started to hit early for me and I was moved, to the back row of the other kids and then moved in with the adults before I was allowed to leave the choir early to become a server. So, message to Barney: been there, done that! 😂

Someone should offer voice lessons instead of asking them to step down. I was in chorus all through high-school and no one ever taught voice. You either passed the audition or you didn't. That no way to teach music

I recently posted the clip of Barney mouthing the words while the baritone sang backstage onto my Facebook. Hilarious. I watched this show every day growing up in the '60s. My small hometown was a lot like Mayberry. People went out of their way to make sure somebody didn't get their feelings hurt.

I've been binge streaming Andy Griffith; watching them one after another I now see there were a few episodes featuring Barney and his issues with the choir. One introduced Jim Nabors as a singing Gomer and one had Jack Prince (who I actually think was a better singer than Nabors) as Rafe Hollister. At some point you'd think Barney would just realize he can't sing and find something else to do

FUN FACT…it was between takes on this episode that The Dillards showed up at Desilu Studio to audition for Andy Griffith…Andy signed them on the spot, they became The Darlings (along with Maggie Peterson and Denver Pyle) and the rest is Classic TV history!

I think about these episodes a lot these days. We have a new music minister at first Baptist Maryville and he is really fantastic. But I think he's also surprised at how bad a singer I am. Just like John Masters in Mayberry he knows what he wants to do about it but right now the choir is so small we need voices.

If you do a pitch check using isolated choral tuning with 440=A you’ll find that Barney is spot on and the rest of the choir is a 1/4-tone sharp. Including the piano.
