I came back to visit my Mom who had been a piano teacher for years. She was binge watching Andy Griffith the whole time I was there. I said why are you watching this old stuff? She said because she didn't get a chance to while it was on. I heard her giggling and laughing that whole visit till late into the night. I didn't know she could laugh like that. It was precious. This was the pilot episode for Andy Griffith. Spun off from Danny Thomas Show. Andy Griffith became a hit in 1958 for doing "No Time For Sargents". Don Knotts was not part of the original Mayberry cast. When Don saw this episode he called Andy and said, "I think you need a deputy sheriff." The rest is history.

This was not a Pilot for the Andy Griffith show. this is an Episode of the the Danny Thomas show. Andy Griffith was a SPIN OFF of the Danny Thomas show. for example. Mork was on happy Days, the episode with Mork was not a pilot for the Mork and Mindy show. Mork and Mindy was a Happy Days spin off. Lavern and Shirley were in an episode of Happy Days. so once again Lavern and Shirly was a spin off of Happy Days. Understand?????

I’m almost 70, and my dad was a t.v. Repair man in the fifties and sixties. He drove a van full of tubes to change when he got a call from someone. He also installed the tall antennas on people’s roofs.. I remember this .. and it’s nice to see it again ! Love Grandma Debbie

@ Debra Sparks-- We are about the same age, and I can remember back in the late 1950's and 1960's, my dad would fix our old circa 1950 Westinghouse tv. He would remove some of the tubes from the tv and we would then go to the local drugstore that had a tv tube testing machine that also contained tubes for sale. He would purchase the the necessary tubes, and then put them in the tv when we got back home. When we moved to a newer house in 1961, that house had a very large tv antenna that was attached to the outside fireplace chimney.

@@franknew9001 after my dad was wounded on Omaha Beach, the army trained him in a new thing.. Television! He had a van full of tubes and went to houses to “ repair “ ( change tubes). He also installed antennas on rooftops! He made a good living because tubes went out a lot ! 🤣🤣 our first t.v. Was a giant thing with a round screen, but we had the highest antenna in town.🤣 remember when it showed the test pattern at night right after the tape of jets flying with America the Beautiful played ?? And only 3 stations back then ?? I miss those days, everything was so innocent back then..

@ Debra Sparks-- I am glad that your dad survived at Omaha Beach, as my dad also survived WWll. My dad was a navigator on a B25 bomber, and their plane was shot at and badly damaged by enemy fire and crashed. All but one crew member survived the crash. I can easily remember when there were only three network stations, NBC, ABC, and CBS. I was too young to remember the DuMont network that went out of business around 1956. My dad told me about the DuMont network that originally aired the Jackie Gleason show called "The Honeymooners." I was lucky to grow up in Maryland that was very close to Washington, DC. Washington had a independent metromedia channel that repeated many shows for kids such as "The Three Stooges," " Superman, " and many other shows that kids like. This was my favorite tv channel by far back then. I do remember back in the 1960's that a little after midnight, all of the networks would play the National Anthem with the planes flying, then go to a "test pattern" that had an Indian on it, and a little later the picture would turn to "snow." Yes, it seemed that everything was much better back then.

In 1960 my dad took us to the train station here in Merced California to see SENATOR John Kennedy give a speech when he ran for president.. remember how they would go on trains and stop at every town give a speech standing on the caboose.. then go to the next town?? Living in California, they’d start in L.A. then end up in Sacramento, THEN fly to another state and catch another train .. it was a good time then .. my dad was first infantry, North Africa, Sicily,Italy, then wounded on Omaha.. he was my hero and always will be.Back then they used to take care of disabled vets. I still live in the house he got with his G.I. Bill.. three bedroom house on a acre of land that cost him only $5,000!

I love that they cast Frank Cady to play the town drunk which would eventually be recast as Otis Campbell in the actual series. Then, years later Otis would leave Mayberry and head off to see what life in the "big city" would be like only to end up in the drunk tank there and who does he meet? Frank Cady again playing another drunk. Cady is better known for playing Sam Drucker, the proprietor of the General Store in Hooterville (the main competition to the Andy Griffith franchise of rural comedies in the Sixties).

The Andy Griffith Show was a favourite of mine, growing up. My Grandmother was from a small part of England. Never lost her accent. I spent many weekends at my grandparents home, and Summers. Andy Griffith always whistles in various episodes, as I thoughtbtgst was so quaint , in a small town. I would have so enjoyed meeting him in person. I grew up without a Dad at age 4 ( He passed away or cardiac arrest at 35 years old) . My Mum was only 32. I. truly related to this Show. It was wholesome and delightful. Whenever I see one of these shows and at the end, I see that it was either produced/directed by Sheldon Leonard, I smile and shake my head. Mr. Sheldon Leonard was an actor from the 30s, 40s, that usually played gangster roles, like Harry the Horse in Guys and Dolls, Phil Church in Another Thin Man, and Nick the bartender in It’s a Wonderful Life, and countless other roles. It is amazing to say the least how successful he was as a producer and director. Just look back at all the "HIT" shows he produced, and you will be astonished. [Danny Thomas, Andy Griffith, Dick Van Dyke, Gomer Pyle, and more] He was truly talented and amazing. Thank you, Mr. Sheldon Leonard, for your incredible contribution to show business entertainment.

Many many years ago my late father dated a woman whose son was a producer at 20th Century Fox. The studio was not "open to the public" or gave tours (like Universal Studios did), but I was able to go and visit there for a few days. I saw many famous actors and actresses who were filming their TV shows at the time. What a treat to actually walk on the set that The Andy Griffith show was filmed! I could not tell you the joy I had! Even though it was only a TV show, it instilled in all of us who love this show a true understanding of "real America"... of good country living, nice neighbors, and average Folk. Ever since I was a child watching the show I had always wanted a house that had a porch like Andy's house! I could watch these episodes a zillion times _(and probably have!)_ and never tire seeing them again!

It was a “Backdoor Pilot” which had the characters on another show to eventually spin them off. Laverne and Shirley started out on Happy Days before being spun off. The weirdest one was Mork on Happy Days challenging Fonzie.

Frances Bavier {"Henrietta Perkins" in this episode} appeared as a different character when several changes were made between this "prototype" episode, and the series that followed- especially when Andy wanted Don Knotts to be his deputy, "Barney Fife"......and "Rose" left the Taylor household to get married......and "Aunt Bee" arrived to take her place in the first episode.

That actor was perfect for that old Scrooge type character. He just looked the part. We don't have those kinds of older character actors anymore. Anyone over 50 rarely gets cast on tv shows now. You have to be a pre-teen, teen or young adult (or maybe into your 30s to be interesting to tv execs and that might be pushing it).

Will Wright was a character actor in Hollywood fer' many years. As such he appears in all kinds of classic cinema. In reality Wright actually wasn't as old as he appeared. He died of cancer at 68 I believe but played "old and a curmudgeon", for many years prior. Alot like BURT MUSTIN who was alot like Wright --- probably even MORE so.....the difference was that Mustin lived to actually become " an older gentleman "....!

Humorist, pastor Gayle Erwin explained that a comedian was someone that got laughs at soneone else's expense by making fun of them but a humorist was humorous without making fun of anyone except themselves occasionally. Danny Thomas was like that, a humorist. He and Andy Griffiths were a couple of the great entertainers of their era.

When I was a little boy I can recall my Mama would holler for me to come In because Andy was coming on. I had four sisters and my mom and we would all gather around that old black and white tv and watch.That was around 1967 68!and now I'm sixty In 2023 and I still love watching The Andy Griffith show and I can hear my mother's voice. Those days were like living In Heaven.

I’m 75. I also grew up on these shows and watched all of them. I Love Lucy, Danny Thomas, Andy Griffith, Dick VanDyke, Jackie Gleason, Burns and Allen, Leave It To Beaver - and all I can say is thank God for ME-TV, FE-TV, and KZbin! I have no interest in any of the comedies from the 70s on with the exception of Happy Days. These shows STILL make me laugh and I never tire of watching the reruns. The older I get, the more I long for the 50s again. It really was different back then..😢

I miss all the old television shows, every evening when Andy Griffin reruns come on she looks over at me and says “why can’t we move to Mayberry, what happened to our country”. I grew up in a small rural town in Michigan. Very much like Mayberry, we didn’t lock our doors, as children we rode our bikes without helmets. We stayed outdoors until the street lights came on. Drank tap water from the garden hose. We had competition shooting in high school, both rifle and sporting clays. Every pickup truck in the high school parking lot had a easyrider rifle rack in the back window. There were no home invasions, no schools, mall, or places of worship shootings. We judged people on their actions, content of their character, not the color of their skin or for what they could do for us.

63 years ago...young Ron Howard's done all right for himself, wouldn't you say? I remember watching Andy and Opie when these shows were new, and Danny Thomas as well. As a 14-year old just back from four years in France I just ate all of it up. Good clean entertainment. Never forgotten.

Danny Thomas owned a piece of The Andy Griffith Show, as well as The Dick Van Dyke Show, which helped make him a wealthy man. Funny how those two shows are more popular than ever while Make Room For Daddy/The Danny Thomas Show has faded into the background.

I've never knowingly seen Ron's dad before (Rance Howard per another commenter), but you can certainly see a resemblance. Thanks for posting this episode...it was entirely new to me and a fun watch.
