Your intuition is correct. The writers were going for a laugh (hear the laugh track when Mr. Darling wiped his eye?) but Andy Griffith sensed the writing was off and changed his character’s physical and verbal responses to match the gravitas of the scene. In so doing he turned a brilliant musical performance into one of television’s most poignant moments.

There 'was' a time when Maggie was only 23 (1964), when performing this outstanding ballad! I never heard a better song on TAGS than "There Is A Time." Rest In Peace, dear lady. You made each of those 6 episodes, far brighter, funnier, and exciting to watch from your presence and attitude. I remember one episode where you whistled with your fingers in your mouth, just like a man! Your songs had a message to them, no more than in "There Is A Time" ("The Darling Baby" episode, aired on Dec. 7, 1964). She lost her husband Gus Mancuso last Dec. (2021), him 88, after 43 years (1968). Very common for the surviving spouse to follow within 2 years, and in this sad case, only 5 months. As a child I watched this show with my father every night before bed, and this song seemed so sad for me, and it made me tear up when I heard it....I didn't hear this for years but found myself humming this tune a few weeks ago, and searched for it, finally finding it here. My father and I loved this song.....he's been buried for five years now...and whenever I hear it...I still tear up.

Fever Pitch I tear up to when I hear it. I grew up in the south. This song reminds me of those golden summer days long dead and past into darkness forever. Many memorys well up. And Im taken back to times I can never revisit except what little scraps I have in my mind. And I can see the seasons rolling bye over the years again. And the creek filling back up with the spring rains before summer. And the long grass rolling across the plains in the wind. It brings it all back. Then it all dies again when the songs over. But I can always revisit those golden days in the South with this song. May your memories live on through the ages friend. Have a good day.

🎵 There is a time.. for love and laughter.. the days will pass..like summer storms.. the Winter wind will follow after but there is love.. and love is warm.. there is a time for us to wander.. when time is Young and so are we.. the woods are greener over yonder.. the path is new the world is free.. there is a time when leaves are falling.. the woods are gray..the paths are old.. the snow will come when geese are calling.. we need a fire against the cold. 🎵

Beautiful and profound, something lacking in a lot of modern music. Andy Griffith brought blue grass to the masses and we are better for it.

Always loved when the Darlings came to town. Brisco gets all teary eyed and has to wipe away the tears and sits there looking down at the floor with his shoulders slumped . Then, the most touching moment of the scene is when Charlene looks at her daddy and comforts him by putting her hand on his shoulder at 1:45 . Now,that's just about the prettiest thing I have ever seen. That young lady loves her papa. Maggie Peterson , cute as a button , wonderful singing voice and a very fine actress.

There is something so special about this entire thing. The way Andy stops playing and his comment at the end seem so genuine. Even the camerawork and the way Charlene hits her marks seems flawless. I wasn’t alive when the show was on but am fortunate to get two reruns a night! Episodes featuring the Dillards quickly became my favorites. I’ll never grow tired of it and will now watch it again!
