Dear Lads, hello. I am 99 yrs old. I watched the Andy Griffin Show, never missed a show. I remember when this episode came on. My husband and myself thought this was just beautiful and we would have loved to buy it . But we didn't know where yo buy it. It was just so haunting but yet timeless. My time here will be up soon, but I got to watch some of the best TV in history. The crap they have on TV and the movies today is just filth. I am honored to have seen the most wonderful shows and movies during the 1940s, 50s and some of the 1960's. And Don Knotts was my favorite of all time. I remember standing in line at the cinema to see The Ghost and Mr. Chicken when it was new released. We couldn't stop laughing. You don't find good clean entertainment anymore, today it's just FIFTH. Thank you Lads for putting this on here. God Bless. 👵 PS we loved Maggie and her father and you Boys. ❤️ and Ernest T. Bass🤣👵

Your intuition is correct. The writers were going for a laugh (hear the laugh track when Mr. Darling wiped his eye?) but Andy Griffith sensed the writing was off and changed his character’s physical and verbal responses to match the gravitas of the scene. In so doing he turned a brilliant musical performance into one of television’s most poignant moments.

When you get older, you look back on your life. You are forced to see regrets, and bad choices we have made. You long for the simple life of days long gone. You see family and friends that have passed. You see people making the same mistakes you have made. I tell my son all the time. It's not intelligence I speak to you with. It's the voice of experience, and that is worth more than anything.

There 'was' a time when Maggie was only 23 (1964), when performing this outstanding ballad! I never heard a better song on TAGS than "There Is A Time." Rest In Peace, dear lady. You made each of those 6 episodes, far brighter, funnier, and exciting to watch from your presence and attitude. I remember one episode where you whistled with your fingers in your mouth, just like a man! Your songs had a message to them, no more than in "There Is A Time" ("The Darling Baby" episode, aired on Dec. 7, 1964). She lost her husband Gus Mancuso last Dec. (2021), him 88, after 43 years (1968). Very common for the surviving spouse to follow within 2 years, and in this sad case, only 5 months. There is something about her voice and the innocence in her look that captures that era. Having seen these shows on first run and in comparison to tv today the contrast is unbelievable. I lived in homes that looked like that here in the south and was exposed to music like that in the Appalachians. I listen to everything from classical to metal but thoroughly love the honesty and purity of bluegrass and mountain music. Truly one of the greatest songs of the genre. I think for just a moment there Andy was thinking" and here I have been dodging her all this time. ". These images are now in dusty memories, the sounds fading in our ears. But here on YT we are still able to access them for now..

The songs that were written at that time had meaning to them. How could you sing about love if you have never experienced it in its true form . I have many fond memories of watching this show nearly every day with my grandpa, he passed when I was 8. I’d give about anything to have that back. I’m 26 now and one thing for certain is that I couldn’t be more grateful for the time we shared together.

I too feel like, how did I never notice this beautiful song with all the times I've seen Andy. Love the way Andy stops playing just to admire Charlene's singing and her beauty. Could there be a more likeable man than Andy Taylor.

I didn't hear this song until I started watching reruns of Andy Griffith 3 years ago, shortly after my husband of 43 years passed away. 😢 I'm 68 now and this song is hauntingly beautiful and I listen to it often with tears of sadness mixed with tears of joy for what I once had and now have lost. It's such a beautiful song ❤❤❤❤

This reminds me of my Wife and walks we would take through the woods. She died from a heart attack 20 years ago and this song makes cry.

God be with you, my brother. So sorry for your loss. After all of these years, do you have any wisdom to offer with regard to dealing with such a loss? Any insight appreciated. Peace to you.

Had the good fortune to meet Denver Pyle in 1979. I was tending bar. He was there with some friends and drank Dewar's and water. Tipped me $10 for one round! I asked him if he still played the jug and he said it had been quite awhile. He remarked on how the Andy Griffith show had held up over the years. Very nice man.

Had to listen to the lilting voice of Maggie as Charlene. She has been welcomed into the heavens but the stars are shinning a lot brighter today and forever. We will miss you, lovely lady. It was such a pleasure to meet you and all the Darlings at Mayberry Days. Will remember you always....

This just came on tv while I was sitting with my Parents at Christmas... I kinda had to step out quick... had tears rolling down my face, didnt want them to mistakenly worry. The best songs always do that. This is wonderful.

One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written by two of the greatest bluegrass performers of all time. "The woods are greener over yonder the path is new the world is free"

@@thedillards Hey! I never expected that I might ever get to see y'all around here. You guys were one of my introductions to lyrical bluegrass, and I grew up loving that and folk music (in fact, pretty sure I'm here today in this comment section because I was seeking out some lyrical bluegrass). I'd be a third generation effectively raised on this music, and getting near a fourth to add to the legacy. It feels so much like reaching back in time a bit, and I'm so glad I have the opportunity, but thank y'all, to absolutely all y'all, for the life and light you brought into the world. I have my six stringer now, and my first ever stringed instrument -- my banjo, and I'm learning a little more, bit by bit. Hopefully someday I can join the ranks of those bringing that kind of music and light into the world. I certainly know what kind of an impact it had on me. :) Thank you.

"Haunting" is the best description for this song. I love this song, but it's also one that makes me want to cry.

@@fernbear3950 My granddaddy was in a Bluegrass band probably in the early 1900's. My mom always told me I got his talent for music because I could (and still can) play things by ear on the piano when I was very young, and on violin later. Music has had a big impact on me my entire life in one way or another. I'm glad I inherited the bluegrass gene from my granddaddy. Lol 🤠

I was in the lobby bar of some hotel in Chicago when I heard a house band playing this song. It chilled me and gave me goosebumps. When I asked what the song was, I couldn't believe this was the source. Never know what affect your life will have.

Andy took the words right out of my mouth: "that's the purtiest song I ever heard"! One doesn't appreciate that kind of song until you reach my age of 84 and then you realize how you should spend TIME while you are young.

We often don't get a chance to show our appreciation until almost everyone is gone. Only Rodney remains at this moment and I'm glad that this memory has been saved and shared. I only have memories in my mind of my father, He passed way too soon for us to get him on video but he could play as well as Doug Dillard and others but only had a chance to play with Mac Wiseman a few times when he was younger. Thanks for sharing this.
