One of the most impressive guitar performances ive seen

Barney Kessel unico e per sempre grande. Grande chiarezza dovuto anche all'uso del suono secco. Basta con gli effetti che usano molti chitarristi di oggi. Ascoltate e riascoltate i grandi del passato.

Emocionante! Berlin Festival Guitar Workshop de 1967 com participações de Baden Powell, Jim Hall, Buddy Guy e Elmer Snowden. Nunca editado em CD.

In the middle of this medley, someone is giving Jim Hall smelling salts, since he had to faint at what Kessel is doing. I watch it and come damn near fainting--it is so extraordinary and so far beyond what anyone was doing then--or even now.

You're right. Didn't mean to sound like I was denigrating Hall, just trying to elevate Barney's spontaniety by saying that even another master would be amazed.

Orfeo Negro is one of my favorite tunes and this version played by Barney is one of the best, but I can only enjoy it half way through before they pickup the tempo to get into what I guess was "hip" in the days when this was recorded.

The uptempo piece is a different song often played together with Orfeo Negro (Black Orpheus). The second song is Samba de Orfeo (Orpheo) also called Orpheus Samba.

The concert happened during the Berlin Jazz Festival in Fall 1967, same as the duo Barney K. with Jim Hall " You stepped Out of a Dream" . There has been only one duo occasion! in their lifetimes, they both told me.

i hear what you're saying,but great improvisers basically compose on the spot as opposed to others, who just blow over changes. barney was a king of ballads,a monster in the studio and his sense of texture improv-wise is very interesting.but in my opinion,jim hall said more in less notes.there are merits of both types of playing,but jim is probably the most expressive and MUSICALLY advanced improviser on our instrument.playing fewer notes with intention doesn't indicate a lack of adventure!

@alexdroogie100 Gibson still makes this pickup on special order! The only thing they changed on it (slightly) is the impedance, making it work better with the powerful amps of today.
@anastasio51316 жыл бұрын
i dunno...jim hall was probably like...i could have said the exact same thing with half the notes, took a drag from a cigarette and thought of other ways to substitute V13b9 chords. i love barney...but jim just knew what to do and there was no filler! barney knew where he was going but surprised himself with the passing tone runs. jim knows what will be hip three measures before he plays it.
