Great vid. Southern Italy needs more recognition. My IWS course really opened me up to many grapes, wines and styles. Would love to see more from “the south” and the islands. So much there to explore. Thank you!

Hello sir. May I inform you that Aglianico is originally a Greek grape, not Italian. This grape was brought to Italy in the times of Magna Grecia 700-500BC from ancient Greek colonizers. It's name "Aglianico" derives from the word "Hellenico" which in Greek means "Greek". However, today it is more used in Italy for wines but in Greece there are very few wineries that started making wine with it again, in the last few decates.

Glad you like it! There is a lot of debate on this grape. My friend and grape geneticist Jose Vouillamoz has argued and published in Jancis Robinson’s “Wine Grapes” that Aglianico is actually Italian… regardless it can make lovely wines

I tried a Taurasi recently. It was a 2011 Piano De Montevergine. It blew my mind! I loved it. It has the bigger body and more residual sugars that make it so satisfying.

I have Aglianico a few times now and its pretty amazing stuff. You are spot on it does get better with age. Is the Barolo of the South of Italy? Hmmm..... I think it's natural for people to want to have a frame of reference or comparison with something that they know well. I don't know Aglianico well enough to make that call. But it's definitely south Italy's most complex red varietal. I looked on wine-searcher just now about it now, as I remember reading or watching some where that it's very old. Like it goes back to Roman times; don't know it that's 100% correct. But it's definitely an underappreciated wine and should be on every wine lover's radar.

For years I never got the comparison (even after hundreds of examples) until I had the right one with age. In the span of one month I had two aged ones in blind tastings that made me go… Aaahhhhhh!!!!

Southern italian here: if you ever get a chance try Luigi Lecce as a producer (Poliphemo is his famous Taurasi) and Quintodecimo. They are both outstanding, and the second has Barolo prices but is better 🙂

Galiopo is the Calabrian variety most common. These areas were the 3rd world of Europe in the 80s. People refer to Amalfi in South but theres a hole coastline off that beaten path, Sicily and Liparian Islands, Stromboli. They refer to wine in Calabria, Petrollio lol, what I tried was strong higher ABV

Tasted a lot of basic, mainly stainless steel anglianicos (Terredora, Feudi etc etc) phenomenal table wines. Low alc., loads of fruits and they have a pretty decent concentration, very good every day wines. Taurasi needs sh.tloads of time, the new oak just kills them, when they are young imo.

I totally agree with you on the new oak. The two from Cavalier Pepe in the video are frombig casks. Fresh Aglianicos can be delicious too. I do like Feudi's... Thanks for chiming in!

I never like when they say “the X of the Y”, it’s almost saying like these places have no innovation or that are copying the product of somewhere else. I understand marketing does it to simplify, and I got caught into this with the “Barolo of Greece”. Xinomavro has nothing to do with Barolo and it’s its own great stand-alone wine. There’s no need to use these cheap comparisons. That said, I love Aglianico ❤
