As a controller, I always appreciated when a pilot reported leaving their altitude for their crossing restriction or PD descent. We are human and do make mistakes. It gave me a chance to scan once more just in case I missed something. Or maybe a VFR popped up between the time I issued the clearance and the time you started your descent.

You’re probably in a league of your own for the most part. Can’t tell you how many times I’m given a crossing restriction, I calculate the TOD and BOD, then at TOD report vacating and a good percentage of the time the controller doesn’t even respond, other times they seem totally annoyed, and a few guys, perhaps you, acknowledge it with a “Roger”

I really enjoyed the In the Hangar video. The spring winds up here (KFMN) have been brutal. Between that and moderate turbulence that never seems to go away it's been hard to find a good day to fly. If I was going somewhere, I'd fly (if safe) but it's hard to get motivated to fly in a bounce house just for fun. I'm moving back to TX in another week. I'll miss the C172RG that I've been flying. The rate for a C172 in TX is the same as the C172RG here :/ and it's an hour plus drive to get to an airport that has rentals vs 30m here. Oh well, it's better than being stuck on the ground.

While we’re at all the specifics about radio communications, also keep in mind when you’re given a barometric setting, you don’t need to repeat that setting back to ATC. You’re doing it all the time and it’s completely unnecessary. If you feel the urge to talk, simply say thank you or Roger
@scottromanos74832 жыл бұрын
The ICAO requirement over most of the world is to read back the altimeter setting. In Europe, if you do not, the controllers will continue to give it to you until you read it back. The US is part of ICAO but is not always in lockstep with ICAO in a regulatory sense. In this case, while ICAO requires a read back of the altimeter setting, the US does not. Hence, you will find many pilots who follow the ICAO standard just to keep it consistent.

One of my radio call hot buttons is that, on initial contact, the first words spoken should be the name of the facility. In other words, say “Jax center, good morning, 3175W, level at 6,000 (or simply “6,000”),” NOT “Good morning, Jax center, blah, blah, blah.” Perhaps paradoxically, I don’t mind a cordial signoff spoken last, as saying the N-number last has always sounded awkward to me. That is, say “124.56 for 75W. Good day.” NOT “124.56. Good day. 75W” Smoothly delivered, professional comms are a hallmark of competent piloting and will go a long way toward assuring the best possible treatment from ATC.

A couple more radio pet peeves: * Prefixing a single-digit US runway number with a zero (“runway zero-two, runway zero-five” etc.). There are no leading zeros on US runway numbers. Look at the big numbers painted on the runway, or listen to what ATC uses. * Appending “Last call” when leaving an uncontrolled airport traffic area.

Some runway directions are ambiguous if you're not paying attention: RWY 20 is opposite RWY 2. I prefer to emphasize what runway I'm intending to use - particularly in calm wind at non controlled airports with a lot of training activity.

@jcburleigh2 жыл бұрын
It's just those extra two words; the checkin still happens, it's just about who am I calling (e.g. JAX CTR), what am I flying (tail number), and at what altitude. That's the checkin. But I hear the extra "with you" or occasionally "checking in", and nobody seems to mind, takes only about one extra second. My ATC pet peeves: 1) reading back advisory information 2) using your call sign when ATC just asks you a question like "seven five whiskey, where are you parking?"

Are you saying atc shouldn't use your call sign when asking you a question?

@@morganghetti Every transmission should include your call sign! To start leaving it off is a very sloppy practice.

You are wrong about the descending crossing restriction and not reporting vacating of an altitude. I realize hardly anybody does it but technically you are required to do it. I think it’s wrong to make a statement of what “you think” the “controller is thinking”. Sorry, This might be nitpicky but it is a technicality!

It’s not what they are thinking. They can’t give you a crossing restriction if there is conflicting traffic. Now I have had a controller chime in that he doesn’t mind them to make sure a VFR target didn’t pop up.

@@BaronPilot I’m sorry I must’ve misunderstood your comment. I thought you were commenting on radio phraseology and whether it was appropriate or not to announce vacating an altitude when given a crossing restriction, keeping in mind given a crossing restriction (not descend Via) is another form of pilot discretion According to the AIM paragraph 5-3-3, you should make a report to ATC "When vacating any previously assigned altitude or flight level for a newly assigned altitude or flight level." There's a fair amount of debate among pilots and controllers whether you should report leaving an altitude on a PD clearance, but according to the AIM, you should. And as long as the frequency isn't jammed up with controllers giving clearances, it's typically better to over-inform, than to under-inform, when you're talking to ATC. I prefer to follow the AIM than to listen to a controller‘s opinion, frankly.

ATIS : " Say on initial contact you have information ____". Really. What will it take 4 pilots 2 hear the "what's with CFIs these days!" in the Clearance/Ground Controller's voice as they have to say for the tree thousandth time this week, "Please confirm you have information ____". Does it take a 5-n-drum corps ? " Niner times Mrs. Bueller. Niner times. "

Pet Peeve Comment #1: "Belchfire 123AB is departing, LAST CALL" [Why do I care? Just say departing on the downwind, departing to the east, etc.] Pet Peeve Comment #2: "Any traffic in the area please advise." [self-explanatory]
