The Grimsel is one of Switzerland's finest driving roads. Every sane person does it during weekdays, on weekends theres way too much traffic and police. At 9:40 you also see the Furka pass, which starts right at the bottom of the Grimsel Pass and is great fun aswell. Hearing your reactions just reminds me how spoiled I am, having these roads 1h from my home.

Best thing about that SatNav is making your settings curvy roads, and in avoidances, out in motorways and toll roads. For extra spice, un-check unpaved roads from avoidances. Found some outstanding roads in south east France I would never have found just going by ear

Strangers in these parts of a country are really helpful, just as you said. I once did a tour through Sweden (not on a motorcycle though, just plain non-powered bikes) and had a serious accident somewhere in the middle of nowhere, with the next larger town probably being 50 miles away. Just a few minutes after that, some stranger stopped by and offered us help. He took our bikes and bags to his house a few miles away, called an ambulance and stayed with us until that ambulance arrived and took us to the next hospital. We got the bikes the next day and had a nice chat with this guy. That really helped us out and I'd say we would have been pretty much fucked up if no one had stopped by. Anyway, nice scenery, nice video =)

Half Plan Half Wing it is certainly the way I went about it! Flexibility to do what you want with a degree of structure. I set out the passes/routes I wanted to do and took the roads as they came. Like Baron mentions I found some WiFi, used the Expedia App and used the searchable map in the area of the next days start route and booked. I took a full puncture repair kit/12v air compressor and first aid kit/tool kit. Luckily none needed but nice to have on board. 7 days on a S1000R with pannier (SW-Motech Blaze, unexpanded) and tank bag set only. Plenty for 7 days. Even had a casual set of trousers, top and shoes for evening meals to avoid being a total scummer! Watching this makes me want to go back right now!

I toured France with a pal and we took a tent, 2 sleeping bags and 2 changes of everything. We were gone for two weeks. We camped on council run sites for ridiculously cheap rates (£2.50p per night) all the way down to the South of France and we used local launderettes whenever we had too. We avoided toll roads and enjoyed exploring the back roads. We met amazing people in the centre and south of France and more than once got put up for the night in their homes and were well fed and allowed to use their baths and showers. When those were not available and there was nothing else, we bought some trunks and went to a local swimming pool and used their showers. Most of the camp sites had showers on them, though their toilettes were pretty naff. (Squat over a stinking hole in the floor and avoid what was left when the others missed.) In the south of France we stayed at a camp site called La Seagull (We actually took the last two places and only got them because the guy who ran the place had booked some Germans and he hated Germans and gave their places to us. When they arrived in their Audi sports car, furious with him, he just shrugged and walked away. I felt bad for about 30 seconds.) It was in a great place called, Mandelieu-La Napoule. Highly recommend it.

had to wait at the exact same stoplight when I was there this summer :-) the scenery and the roads are just breathtaking. I planned my routes in advance though. benefit is you know where you end up at night, downside: you might not recall all the towns and passes you flew trough during the day. which makes not a great vacation story. the answer to "where have you been" comes down to: I don't exactly know, let me check my sat nav :-)

I have went on a few small trips this year, while using a GPS. Its usefell for having routes pre-fixed and having an amazin route to drive. Without having to faf about with maps an hoping for a nice stretch of road. But im not fixed on it, if im somewhere i have a stop and look on my GPS and see a different route or spot of road that looks awsome. I just take that and see where it leads too, did that the last time. And ending up adding something like around 100 miles more to the route. On a few moments it was so fun, i took a certain bit twice :)

Can understand you not wanting to look at your satnav all the time but one or two pre-planned custom routes can often get you away from the traffic into some stunning areas...... just takes a bit of time with something like Basecamp's software.

One of the most difficult parts of touring in the alps: gas it and drag knee down the amazing road, or look around and take in the amazing scenery. It's hard to do both at once! Also youre right about the lack of forewarning corner signs. You can be boppin along at or above the 90 KPH speed limit and find yourself entering a 30 KPH hairpin. Keeps you on your toes!

I got into the gps thing for a while then realized i was spending half the time looking at it and not enjoying the scenery so i ran the charger under my seat and i leave it there during my adventures. Any more i even refuse to even look at the weather. If i see storm clouds coming i race towards either end of the storm to get around it. usually end up getting rained on but also ending up somewhere i never would have been otherwise. Also i am incredibly jealous if you baron may just leave the states so i can ride to these places.

I would say British Columbia and western Alberta (Jasper and Banff) in Canada definitely rival the Alps in beauty. The Alps have technical roads more readily available, but you also have much less traffic in Canada. That's one really nice thing you get in Canada, remoteness. You actually have well maintained, wide roads with few cars. You could top out a bike easily for a good while before coming up to a car. The highways are mostly big sweepers, and just off the highways are awesome technical roads. Speed limits allow a legal 130kph with (from my experience) a light police presence that are use to a decently large motorbike culture. You get very pleasant summer and winter temperatures. It is also familiar western culture. I just finished a tour of a large portion of Canada, (about just over 10,000 kilometers) and loved British Columbia. I am definitely moving to Vancouver within this year. I agree with most of your touring preferences. I tried my hardest not to over pack, but still wish I had left some things at home. Space is at a premium on a sport bike with soft luggage, and I wanted to keep the bike light to enjoy the roads.

I take my undercrackers, t shirt & socks in the shower with me to wash em out. I live in SW France so tour the Massif Central & Pyrenees and many places in between so warm weather to dry my laundry is the norm. Kecks X2, socks X2pr, T shirts X3 and shorts X 1, leisure shoes X1pr. In the event it turns cold the riding gear is worn away from the bike. My tip, if camping no need to pay for a electricity hook up as the wash rooms have live shaver sockets, we use them to charge phones, intercoms & cameras, though often the electricity posts on the plots are live too. I used to tour on a ZX-6R now a Street Triple, so pack to the minimum.

Swizerland it's a beautifull land, in every mountain road you found a great asfalt (like a circuit) But if you want to enjoy it, you have to setup your motorcycle on the RAIN mode 😁 or better touring mode or the swiss police make your holiday shorter!!!
