I was slightly terrified thinking about that. The field of vision on the helmet cam (the fishbowl effect) might make it look worse than it is, but still... He was smart to mention the panniers though, hit one of those and him and the bike would be flying.

Great video. I lurrrrrve the Alps! I'm just watching this in the UK as I eat my generic breakfast cereal before saddling up for my morning commute, the prep for which will include flicking the switch on heated grips so this has brightened my day. Quite jealous you spotted some Marmots. I was absolutely hanging out to see one in my recent trip to Canada but could only muster the odd Chipmunk. As a special treat, search on KZbin for 'Marmot Scream' and enjoy.

Years back I ended two different 14+ hour drives at mountain passes. One was fogged in like you had, the other, the pass was completely iced over and I was fighting a loaded U-haul trailer without brakes, trying to pass me the whole way down. Both were just scary to get through with being so road weary. Note that I said 'drive'. I would not want to be in that state on a bike doing the same thing heh.

As a ex-pat biker living inland from La Rochelle France, my closest mountain passes are in the Massif Central (half day ride) or Pyrenees (also half day on the autoroute). As the Baron say's the alps is do able fairly easy from SE England, SW England, then the Picos de Europa and, or Pyrenees is on the cards, plus you can take in the Massif if you want to go home through France to a channel port. You Northern Bikers can go either way. If you are greedy you can route through all four.

I’m living in Switzerland since 2010 on the Thunersee.. Lake Thun. I’ve climbed all three passes.. Grimsel, Furka & Susten in one day on my Trek Madone and on my GSA 1200 .. definitely easier on the GSA .. but a fantastic feeling to do all three times n one day on the race bike ... 👍😉🇮🇪☘️

I rode the furka grimsel stelvio gavia,.... passes this summer and i have to say that the furka, even though it was by far not the tightest and most difficult pass, was by far the scariest. those little bobbins on the side of the road are the only thing that seperate you and vour bike from a huge drop into death... Even though it was quite scary it was just amazing and i can only recommend anyone out there to get on their bike slap some luggage on it and ride into the alps. You wont regret it

Well yeah, riding passes in bad weather can be really tricky. You can be instantly in the clouds where the visability is nearly zero and you just see all white. Riding the Furka is getting really funny when a caravan and a bus have to cross. But the view and scenery is awesome (in good conditions)

:24 Dark Vader? That was scary and I am sitting in my chair! Yikes, in the dark and wet - no thank you. What was that caravan driver thinking? Or maybe it should be drinking? Beautiful scenery and that road... Like you I wonder how they engineered that road, I guess "When needs must" applies here.

You need an exhaust for the GS! Nothing is better than the sound of a boxer but what good is it at 5 decibels? Let that baby breath. Idk if staintune makes a full system for that bike but it makes my R1100S sound so sexy. All this being said assuming it's not the microphone which isn't doing the bike justice. Love the videos, Baron. Thanks.

Ah fuck, I've had the same experience climbing the Furka a few years ago, as you did, Baron, that "other night": Visibility can't seriously have been more than 5 meters and everything around me was dark-grey. Busses still running though.. insane! It's been one of the scarriest rides yet, for me. The second time up there I chose the weather more carefully before I drove of from Zurich, but that time rode straight into a police radar-trap, costing me a lot of Swiss Francs and blocked my licence for a month. Still, I love the Furka.
