You should build two chickencoops, one for egg lying the other for retired hens, free range the retired hens for insect control, this works well for me, stink bugs don't stand a chance against hungry old hens eating everything they find. They are old, so if you lose a few to hawks, no big lose, so make sure they got an old rooster to protect them.

I wasn't a fan of Hybrid crosses, but the Golden Comet is the only one I'll keep. I absolutely love their friendly demeaner. They lay all winter long and nearly every day. They might not be dual purpose, but you can use them to make chicken broth and bone broth. They are worth their weight in gold, in my opinion.

They can't utilize pasture, only heritage breeds can. They are designed to utilize only fully formulated layer feed. And they lay less and eat more than commercial white leghorns.

I grew up with R.I. Reds! They are such a hardy bird for the cold climes. Plus their temperament was very good. We NEVER butchered our birds as my Dad said they earned a full life cycle for feeding our small family for years!

Me and my family are finally starting up with our chicken farm. Starting small to see how this goes, but I have 3 RIR chicks, 3 California Whites and 2 Barred rock so far. They are still in the house and yes, I have them all together and for the last two weeks have had zero issues with any of them wanting to fight or bully each other. I built a 32’X12’ coop/yard for them. The coop itself is 12 wide and 8 long and 8 tall. The rest is yard fully enclosed, wire buried 2 feet in the ground with a full top. 8 nesting boxes that are flush to the inside back wall and hang out the back with doors so we can gather eggs without entering the coop. I’m extremely excited about this and cannot wait till it’s time to take them to their new home.

We started out with a few hens of several different breeds. Including BR and RIR. We prefer our Barred Rocks due to their inquisitive demeanor and how smart they are. They quickly rose to the top of the pecking order as well. Due to this, we are moving towards a vast majority of BR, including our 7 month old rooster.

Thanks for the informative video. I, too, have Rhode Island Reds and Barred Plymouth Rock hens. In my experience I have found that the the Barred Rocks are a bit more docile then the Reds. As you said... similar birds except in egg production. Reds producing more. But my Reds tend be be a little more agressive and accept new pullets into the flick less quickly than the Barred Rocks.

Australorps will lay better in cold months if you have them and Welsummers, well what can i saw about the best egg laying chicken breed. Yes you sacrifice some eggs but wow they are beautiful, they are so mellow mine would follow me around when i would plant wait for a grub or treat thrown their way, even lay friendly! I really enjoy EASTER Eggers but they are a mixed bag , tho the Ameraucana sweetness does come through. Cackle seems to have the best production line of EE ive seen.

Regardless of which breed you choose to raise, buy only true heritage lines. This can be accomplished by purchasing from an APA certified flock (McMurray has a few of these) or from an old school breeder such as Good Shepherd Conservancy. The vast majority of hatcheries in this country sell really crappy chickens that no longer confirm to the actual breed standard set forth by the APA, which means they do not possess the excellent qualities and health of true heritage birds. You'll have healthier, more productive, true dual purpose chickens that look way better as well.
