Our video deals with one of our favorite chicken breeds, the Barred Plymouth Rock. If you're a beginner, or you want to add to your flock, this is an excellent breed! Very friendly, hearty and tolerant of hot and cold weather.
One thing that I failed to add to the video was their weight. The males reach about 7.5 pounds while the females weigh in around 6.5 pounds.
Please like our video and subscribe! Thanks for watching!

Had one in the past, that would hear my car coming, and rush to greet me in the driveway. Nice birds, I got chicks, again, so, trying again for the first time in 10 years. The thing about "free range", is if you ever get a fox, he does not stop till he gets them all. Everything loves chicken, and spends their life trying to get your chickens. Eventually you will get outsmarted, unless you lock them in a coop with a run.

Really enjoy your chicken video's. Barred Rocks are great. You mentioned to me once that you purchase your chicks from Hoover's in Iowa. They do have quality stock. In their catalog they mention that Barred Rocks and Partridge Rocks rarely go broody. That might be why yours have not been broody. I love Orpingtons...just don't like the broodiness unless that trait has been bred out of them. I notice on your other videos you have Isa Browns and Calico Princess and Black Sex Link. Look like great birds. Curious on the partridge rocks. Hopefully when I get my place in the country I can get some of those. Thanks again for the wonderful videos. I have farm experience so I am familiar with poultry and other livestock. Take care.

It has been fun watching the new breeds grow this season. The only hens who have started laying are the Sapphire Splash. The others aren't far behind. I have no experience with Partridge Rocks. I'll have to look into them. You are correct about Hoover's - quality. I like dealing with them. I hope you get your place in the country soon. It's great that you have experience to bring to your homestead. We started with no knowledge of poultry. Have a great week, Kevin!

We got some from a coworker and they dont eat anything but grass, leaves, and ground corn. The guy we got them from only feed them ground corn. They completely ignore bread, bugs, spaghetti, and pumpkin guts. I have had some little successes with wild bird seed mix. Never had a breed of chicken that didn't love the things they ignore. Any advice?
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm Жыл бұрын
If they were my layer hens, I'd want to get them to like Layer Feed so they are getting the nutrients they need. I'd mix corn in a bowl and t]le them eat. I'd then add more and more layer feed with the corn. That will slowly eliminate the corn, except as a real treat. The corn is not good for them in the summer as it raises their internal temperature. See if you can get them moved over to layer feed. They can still have grass and other things but the main food should be layer feed.

To be honest, we're thinking of phasing out our Reds after next year. They're just too bossy and pick on the others. We're going to move towards more Barred PR. How tall are adult hens? I’ve got 3 chicks coming next week - will be building a coop and run …I was planning on making a 4x4x4 sized coop with a 4x8 run attached (as well as 2ft underneath the coop… so 4x12 run) … and they would have access to fenced 1/2 acre backyard … wanted to know if 3 foot tall would be enough instead of 4ft for the coop? … maybe get 3 more in the future

My personal opinion is to open up as much space as possible. If you crowd them, they will pick on each other more. Give them room. Our "small" coop is 8' x 8' x 4' tall. The run is 14' x 18'. I've got a video on the coop. Our pole barn is larger. I'd do the 4' x 4' x 4' for the three girls. I'd hate to have them peck on each other as it might cut into laying production. Let me know if this answers your questions. Cheers!

Would these make good dual-purpose birds?
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 2 жыл бұрын
They call them dual purpose. They are incredible layers and have a great disposition. We don't feel they are great roasting hens. They would be good for a pressure cooker or using for soup. Hope this helps.

I noticed you have the 2x4's laying flat on the perch. There's so much controversy over the proper perch. I'm assuming you've never had any issues with this method??
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Flat is the way to go. The hens sit with three points of contact - their breastbone and two feet. They can't do that when the 2x4 is vertical. This is the perfect way to do it to keep the girls warm in the winter too. I did a video on our roosts and the reasoning for my decisions. Check it out. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll look up the exact name. Let me know if you have any questions. Cheers Doug!

@@TheOldSwedesFarm Im slightly worried about noise. I have 7ish acres of land so not that much space, I dont know if i want a rooster waking up the neighborhood either. Seems like a difficult balance to achieve. I dont know much about the social needs of chickens but ive read that you need a rooster for protection and to ease the anxiety of the hens. Me and my dad love to build stuff and like gardening but chickens may be a lot for us.

@@chroniccomplainer3792 We don't have a rooster. Usually one of the hens takes on the role and will watch for hawks, danger, etc. We've got 60 hens so there are several who have taken on the role. Seven acres is plenty of space. We've got 60 hens on 3+ acres. They free range all day! Our neighbor (quarter mile away) has a rooster and I can hear it occasionally. If you don't really need a rooster, just have hens!

Roosters are always a wild card. They might get along one day and the next they won't. Thye usually want dominance so there will be some fighting. Each one is different. That probably doesn't help. If we can help you in any other way, let us know. Take care Leona!

Absolutely. If you still have some chick feed, move it to a 50/50 mix with the layer feed. When you run out, go to all layer feed. We usually transition the hens to layer feed at 16 weeks. You should have eggs very soon. I hope this helps Lynn. Keep us posted when they start to lay. Cheers!
