Notes from Thomas about this arrangement:
DK Island swing (along with Simian Segue) were two tracks considered for Brassino Isles. It’s interesting to think about how this arrangement would be different had it been written under that album’s requirements: six brass and a non-brass featured guest, as opposed to the 11-piece ensemble we used for Brassroots. Ultimately, the big brass group lends itself perfectly well to the jazz band feel of the original. This arrangement in particular takes inspiration from a lot of different versions of DK Island Swing. David Wise’s original of course serves as the basis for a lot of this, but after running through the introduction and initial thematic statement, we transition into some of the material Grant Kirkhope composed for his version of this track from Donkey Kong 64. Portions of the straight “jungle” section of the track were also inspired by the darker variations used in some areas of DK64. Later on, the title theme of Donkey Kong Country (which itself is an arrangement of the title music from the original arcade Donkey Kong, composed by Yukio Kaneoka) is used as an interlude to transition into a much faster variation of the Island theme. The final section of the track is an arrangement of an arrangement, using material from Shogo Sakai’s version of this track from Super Smash Bros. Melee. And finally, the piece ends with some ideas subtly inspired by the symphonic version of this track from Japan’s 1996 Game Music Concert 5, arranged by Nobuo Kurita.
In the end, this suite was really just an excuse to arrange a handful of tracks I had wanted to arrange but not yet had the opportunity to it. Sometimes, it’s best to just do the thing you want to do now when the chance just barely offers itself!
