I just wanted to note that I just barely used this method on my M1911 .45. It worked very well. I simply melted down some Wheel Weight Stickies (Which are nearly pure lead, same as sinkers), skimmed the dross, and poured the molten lead into the bullet casing. From there, I used your method and it worked flawlessly!

It looks great 👍.. do you not lube the slug?
@stclairstclair3 жыл бұрын
amats3, I'm a retired mechanic who mostly built engines for GM, Because of this I decided it wouldn't be accurate, The babbitt bearings in your engine can go 200k miles because of a thin layer of oil separates the bearings from the crank, This thin layer of oil causes the bearings to float on the crank, As would a lead slug in the barrel, Even though this might literally be as thin as one ten-thousands of an inch I decided it was best not to lube it, Lead has a natural ability to cause self lubrication, thats why it's in the babbitt material of the bearings, After doing these slugs myself I would recommend doing it dry as I did, All it will do is skew your results, Sorry this was so long, thanks for watching!

This was a great video! When using the bullet puller, try putting the case with the rim facing out of the curved side of the case holder. It will "lock" in and the case holder will be "solid". Then insert the case holder with the flat side down facing the striking end. I think the bullets will come out easier.

My issue with my .303 not enough surface for a good measurement from round ball, Yup I did follow their instructions was not enough surface to get a good measurement. Now for pistols this seems to be the cats meow, bees knees,floats the boat. I could probably get away cutting the .303 brass just past shoulder mate with some sort of base then melt my lead. will have to dig into see what develops??

K.I.S.S. Very good presentation and awesome way to develop a great slug to get very good results. The casing is likely the easiest way to make consistent slugs over multiple calibers.
@madd-mattmitchell9173 жыл бұрын
All it takes is a guy just 'thinking' it through!! Very well done. Using your head. This will only work with straight walled cases; i don't see it working with necked down cases...I suppose you could cut off the slug created at the neck forward.... maybe fill the case to the shoulder and then create the lead slug from there to case mouth. for those of us that sometimes use calibers that utilize a necked case, pistol or rifle.

Thanks for the vid. Great idea about using a case to make the slug. Just slugged my M&P40 and got 0.3945". Problem came when I tried to slug from the chamber end. The lead flowed around the dowel and the dowel sunk into the lead. Thought I almost lost the barrel, it was a bear to remove. Used a drill to remove most of the lead, then the slug came out. Need a much fatter dowel.

Good job! I didn't have a sutiable rod but I had a .32 case. so if you file off the rim, it drops down a 9mm/ 38 barrel. Then you can use a wooden dowl or even a metal rod wrapped in tape. Then you get a pretty much full size punch surface. Just on obvious caution. NEVER use a case with a live primer! I actually punched my primar out.

Superb video. Thank you for it as I have been having the same general problem when thinking of slugging my bore. I do have a general question for you. Here it is... Being that most barrels taper a little from the chamber to the muzzle wouldn't beginning the bore slugging process from the muzzle force the lead slug to obturate as you are banging it to the chamber area? This might be a green question but I am green with slugging a bore. I cast for pistols using powder coating and do not experience leading. However, I am about to start casting or my 308 rifle and I believe that I should slug my bore. Thanks.

Cool, I actually got the idea of using wood quite some time back from another you tube video called "how to make shotgun slugs - with bushboy". As far as a little gun oil making a difference in your measurement I think it would be negligible as any excess would be forced out in front of the slug (most gun barrels have a light coat of oil in the barrel to begin with). I suppose the way to prove it out would be to slug a barrel with oil and then without oil and compare the measurements...
@HanstheTraffer6 жыл бұрын
Great Video. Very informative. I have a 45/70 rifle that I am going to slug. I think that I will do one on each end and one all the way through. That would give me a good minimum ...where the minimum is ...and if there are any tight places through the barrel. I don't know if the "case for a mold" trick will work for a 45/70 so I think that I will have to find a different way to mold the slugs a few thousandths over the anticipated bore diameter.
@stclairstclair6 жыл бұрын
Hans Pcguy, You can fill the case with DRY silica sand, you can top off the sand with dry graphite powder to keep any grit from attaching, otherwise take a blade and clean off any grit from the slug before sizing, choosing a correct lube/sizer size is the next step, I was sizing them too small and had to go up a size. I have gone onto making my own #8 shot, Let me tell you, the first perfect round of trap with your own lead feels pretty satisfying! I will try posting shot making if you're interested, Thanks for watching!!!!!!!!!

Most barrel slugging videos I’ve watched recommend lubing the slug and the inside of the barrel before driving it through. Did you not do it because the slug you made was so well fitted resulting in just a sliver of excess sheared off when you drive it past the crown?

A light application of gun oil to the slug will make for even less resistance. Another method of making a "slug" is to use a fractional, letter, wire gauge, or metric drill bit slightly larger than your barrel diameter and drill a hole through a board of appropriate thickness. Lay the board on a flat heat resistant surface and pour your melted sinker(s) into it. When it cools push the slug out with your fingers and use it to slug your barrel. Us a 5/8 bit & 1oz melted pellets to make 12ga slugs!

You got .356 so do you size at .357 or .358? Since they say you want cast .001 to .002 over bore diameter
@stclairstclair3 жыл бұрын
I found with a barrel at .356 that I needed to size them too .358. At .357. I was getting a lot of blow-by, But this will depend on a few things like lead hardness, I even copper plated a batch before sizing, Boy if I told you I made those you wouldn't believe me they where so pretty! I still want to try the powder-coating method, You need a good reloading book Like "Speer" Starting with a load that is 5-10% under powered and fire them off too see How your bullets are fitting/performing, Be aware that a reduced load cartridge may ricochet off of green trees and pose a serious danger, Ask me how I know, Thanks for watching!
