I live in an area where peppermint is grown and its essential oil distilled. The barrels used to contain that oil are made of extremely heavy gauge stainless steel. They make a practically indestructible stove.

Myself and a friend fabricated our own barrel stoves ( no kit ) back over 30 years ago. Both of us had uninsuated farmhouses which would go through heating oil like crazy. We both had very good results with these type of stoves as they really put out the heat. Good memories.

I have used the non air tight kit in a garage for 5 years and this year in my new (old mill) house replacing the small stove that was already there. I prefer these stoves over any box or furnace style stove. Forget about thick iron small cabinet stoves if you live in a cold climate like me (north PA) because these things hold a TON of wood and quickly get HOT! I have throttled this thing to turn the barrel orange several dozen times. They are downright top notch stoves for the serious wood burning people. Not to mention if you take the time to make baffles and a secondary burning system, they put typical box stoves to shame. I will almost certainly never be without some type of barrel heating system for the rest of my life. If you wanted to, you could configure ducting and run a dual barrel unit to heat a 4 bedroom stand alone home, I have NO doubts about that. They put out ALOT more heat that heavy thick iron units, be careful or youll be opening windows LOL.

Ditto. Was redirected here by a web site where the owner bought the kit from the company and was satisfied with the product. If I had the space, I would have bought the kit already. I like the honesty of telling the kit is not for everybody and that with kids, the barrel stove is a bit dangerous. It's not something you see often nowadays.

I have one in my shop and it's 30x40. I had it so hot in there last winter I had to open all the doors and windows to cool it down. The Thermometer was reading over 115 degrees. We have used ours everyday all through winter for the last 27 yrs with no problems. Yes I do have the bottom lined with brick.

I use a barrel stove in my garage workshop. I found that it would roast me right out of the door then freeze me when the fire died down. I built a concrete masonry enclosure for it and now it moderates the output and stores the heat in the concrete for a lasting heat after the fire burns down. An added bonus is being able to tuck the whole thing up against the wall so I have more room in the shop.

Nice idea. Is it possible to just run a small fire in these stoves ? I am building a plastic covered greenhouse / workshop and I was looking for something inexpensive. I like the idea of being able to load large pieces of wood and branches . Don't these stoves need a grate to keep the wood off the bottom ?

Not to be too picky, but I've been in this field for over twenty-five years and burned wood for longer than that. I've seen lots of these. They became popular when the oil got shut off in the '70's. The technology is the same as in the '70's...and the mistakes are the same too. Long (24 hr?) burns in an airtight stove which is not combustion engineered. That translates to LOTS of creosote and LOTS of flue fires and structure fires. Stoves have come a long way since then. Got any new stoves?

@harrybobb6927
@harrybobb6927 5 жыл бұрын
Although you can make this into a wood stove / boiler to heat your hot water and install water pipe to pre heat your water and install a second extra 55 gallon drum to store your hot water in behind the stove or beside your stove or however you want to put and have your hot water storage it works so great ive done this before all you do is take your 55 gallon barrel wood stove and line some 3/4 ir 1/2 inch copper pipe ribs with U elbows running back and forth all around through the barrel and solder all the pipe ends together in for your inlet and outlet inside of drum and dont forget that as well to make the hot water pipe ribs and take a 45 gallon drum inside for your fire box for your your 55 gallon drum it kinda makes a Babcock boiler type and incase with fire brick making material concrete to in case the copper 3/4 inch or 1/2 inch pipe with the concrete on the outer diameter of the 45 gallon drum inside of the 55 gallon drum and and let that cure for a day or so but make sure to cut a 6 or 8 inch hole for the chimney for both drums to make it fit correctly in both barrels you can take a metal coffee can to extend the flu pipe enough for the concrete to cure in the barrel stove kit fit nicely but make sure you spot weld the coffee can to both inside the barrels so no concrete seeps out while your incasing the copper pipe in the concrete and after the concrete is cured for a day or so then light ur first fire inside the indoor boiler stove and get a nice hot fire going to cure the fire brick correctly before hooking any water lines up because it takes about 2500 degrees to fully cure the fire brick concrete and there you go you have a boiler/wood stove all in combined it works awsome for those who dont want to pay big gas heating bill to just heat your water for just taking a nice hot bath or shower or washing dishes ive put a hand crank black smithing bower on the bottom of ash door air inlet to get the fire hot enough water preheated boiling water just hot enough to put in my storage tank and i put a sliding flat steel plate over the blower air hole intake to air tight the air flow from the blower and blower inlet pipe now you have to watch what your doing because the hand crank black smithing blower can get your fire roaring glowing white in your fire box if your not careful and my blower set has gotten my metal stove pipe glowing cherry red once by accident when i wasnt paying close attention to what i was doing when my wife was talking to me and distracting me from to do what i was doing and getting some hot water going so i immediately shut down the stove tightly and quickly to cool the stove down

I put together a barrel stove in about 1977 to heat a drafty old 5 bedroom, 2 story rent house in Texas. Cheap way to heat for 2 years. Kit cost $35 at the time, scrounged a barrel, cut the holes with a sledge and a railroad spike for a chisel, bought stove pipe from the hardware store. Stoke it to the brim at night and it kept a old house with little warm all night (windows covered with plastic). Wished I had that hot plate. Eventually got tired of busted pipes in the winter and moved out.

Had one in my family cabin/lodge. Its on the west side of the lake, and in northern ontario so gets pretty darn cold. Plus, the camp is almost 90 years old and pretty darn large as they go. Yet, with just one of these located on the main floor in the middle, you can just pump in the wood and take the heat out of the logs real quick. Ours can hold a nice log overnight, but thats more dependant on what door and venting you have. Took a heck of a beating for many hunting and recreational trips, it wasnt pretty, but did the job perfectly.

I'm about to leave to city apartment I have in favour of a rural barn and small house that's attached and half in the barn too. There's no central heating only a tiled stove in one room. I'm planning on converting the barn and insulating the dwelling and I'd love a rustic barrel burner on the ground floor of the barn for the workshop area and allow heat to rise into the main floor of the barn. It's so big I could have a mezzanine floor in the barn. My location can hit - 40 in winter. Great video and inspiration 🙏

I made one of these barrel stoves from the kit. And I'm here to say, in my opinion, if you put all that wood in one, the stove pipe will turn as red as a cherry. I put pieces of pallet in mine. I also have a burn thermometer on my flue pipe. I find that 1/3 of a pallet or more, puts the thermometer into the "over heat" zone.

Good video. Barrel stoves put out the heat, but they're thin and don't last long. A lot of shops had them when I was a kid, but they had to replace them quite often as they rusted out. Also insurance companies nowadays won't insure your house or shop unless you have an approved stove.

Question: lets say you have two stove setups. (1) is a single barrel wood stove. there is straight single wall pipe indoors which doesn't hit the elbow until 8' up from floor. (2) is a double barrel stove. straight single wall pipe connects to elbow at same place as the other stove, 8' up from floor (high ceilings). Question: will the temperature of the single wall pipe directly before the elbow on (1) be lower, higher or same as temperature of the single wall pipe directly before the elbow piece on (2) stove?

thinking of putting one of these in my basement. thoughts? this is the only video ive seen where its used indoors, i want to seal it up proper, vent it with triple wall duravent, and wrap the barrel with high temp flex duct. build a box for a blower fan i have so i can incorporate a filter, hook that fan to the flex duct and pip it into my plenum. hook up a thermostat upstairs on the main floor ( i have a 2100 sq ft ranch) run the wire to a relay then to that blower fan. so when the thermostat calls for heat it trips the relay, kick the blower fan on blows it around the barrel super heating it and blowing it through the whole house. once the house reaches temp, kicks the fan off. also in the summer i could use the fan system to suck the cool air from the un-finished poured concrete basement (hence the need for a filter box) and blow it through the house also. thoughts? sincerely, wanting to save some $$

How do you line it? Wouldn't that take up too much space? Thx

I just take sand say 2 inches deep on bottom of barrel then line the fire brick on top of sand the precut ones like you find at rural King or farm & fleet they are actually replacement fire bricks for higher end woodstoves about 2 bucks a piece I just line the bottom of barrel where the logs sit. It works well

What is the limit of the house/cabin size that a wood stove similar to this could heat effectively?

Thay work great for A-frame houses. And duplex. Really puts out the heat. Use a double barrel. It doesn't let all the heat go up the chimney.
Cheap double barrel stove build. NO KIT NEEDED!!
