The lyrics for all you champs that sing along! Oh, the year was 1778 How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now A letter of marque came from the King To the scummiest vessel I've ever seen God damn them all I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns, shed no tears But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers Oh Elcid Barrett, cried the town How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now For twenty brave men all fishermen who Would make for him the Antelope's crew God damn them all I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns, shed no tears But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers The Antelope sloop was a sickening sight How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now She'd a list to the port and and her sails in rags And the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags God damn them all I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns, shed no tears But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers On the King's birthday we put to sea How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now We were ninety-one days to Montego Bay Pumping like madmen all the way God damn them all I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns, shed no tears But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers On the ninety-sixth day we sailed again How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight With our cracked four-pounders we made to fight God damn them all I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns, shed no tears But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers How the Yankee lay low down with gold How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now She was broad and fat and loose in stays But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days God damn them all I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns, shed no tears But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers Then at length we stood two cables away How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now Our cracked four-pounders made an awful din But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in God damn them all I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns, shed no tears But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers The Antelope shook and pitched on her side How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs And the main truck carried off both me legs God damn them all I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns, shed no tears But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers So here I lay in my twenty-third year How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now It's been six years since we sailed away And I just made Halifax yesterday God damn them all I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns, shed no tears But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier The last of Barrett's Privateers

This version has grown on me so much since a friend recommended it. All of the energy of an angry young man, with the future he dreamed of gone because a man he trusted to lead couldn't be bothered to make sure that the vessel and crew were properly outfitted. The kid shipped out at 17, and only now, at 23 is he even returned to his home port, to tell the families of 19 other sailors what happened. It could have been avoided. This version of the song captures that intensity, the rage at an unjust world. Beautiful.

Colm, thank you so much for listening to our requests for Stan Roger's songs. I was raised on Stan and I've been singing "Barret's Privateers" with my father since I was 7. I'm sure you've done your research about Stan, but here's the thing about his legacy and it's why his fans are protective of his work: Stan died young, *much* too young. He died in a plane crash and left us longing for the complete legacy of music he would have had. His son sings, but the whole fan base is mourning the loss of the songs we will never hear. When you record one of his songs the way *you* do, when you treat the music we love with your skill and drive, we can hear the echo of Stan's voice in your music. Carry him forward, Colm. You can.

Awesome stuff, Colm. Really great use of the sheer power in your voice to instil the song with a sense of anger; most covers aim for a kind-of wistful bitterness, but I think you've captured the essence of it more effectively. A 16-year old Irish lad swept up in a mad get rich quick scheme with enough common sense and sailing experience to realise how woeful a ship the Antelope is, but not enough to turn down Barrett's enticing promises of easy, risk-free money. Even as it becomes increasingly clear the whole expedition is a terrible idea, he knows he's stuck with trying to see it through, only for it to end with the irony of spending two days frantically chasing down a sluggish, overloaded merchant ship only to discover it comfortably outguns them. You really give the singer's voice that sense of rage and frustration, shaking his fist and screaming furiously at Barrett for getting them into this situation, and at himself for being taken in by it, as he's swept off the side of ship and left legless and clinging on to the wreckage with a six year journey home ahead of him.

Considering the lyrics tell the story of the poor lad who’s maimed, it’s a good song to tap your feet to and learn a bit of history too. I played Spanish Ladies the other day and my husband recognised it from a Sean Beam drama, Sharpe (ITV eons ago) but it was one of his favourite shows, apparently the soldiers sang it as a marching song. I’m getting him interested in your singing now, he is as fascinated as I am in your skill and abilities. Kind regards from the UK, bright blessings from your Bridget Priestess.

I think what I love most about Stan Rogers' songs is the super-tight harmonies and the way they never waver from the driving, foot-stomping beat that makes you want to stomp your foot too. A lot of covers water down the song for me, but yours takes everything that I love about it and makes it even better. The original acapella version already sounds so full, but this really makes it a full epic piece! This is like movie soundtrack quality here ❤ And that fiddle bit from 1:22 - 1:30? 😍 _YASS_

I love everything about this! I only wish you had the little “Whoo!” that’s at the end of all of the “How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now” in the original. But it’s so good!

I regret this exact same thing. Truth be told I’ve had trouble committing to my little shanty background ‘whoop’ and ‘yip’s, without overthinking it and deciding that mine are too silly or off sounding, then deleting. Will try and overcome that eventually

I've adored this song since I first found this genera of music. I love how you made it your own too. After watching/listening to a few hundred hours of your music the way you're able to harmonize with yourself still astounds me. Wonderful job on this one.

Dear Colm, THANK YOU! Barrett’s Privateers is one of my all time favourite Stan Rogers songs from the time I was 3 and you nailed it. Your cover of Northwest Passage was also amazing too. Can I convince you to take a look at either The Mary Ellen Carter or The Idiot please? Also I love your sweaters. ❤️

HECK. YESSS. The other day I was in the post office and a couple people were remarking on the new Stan Rodgers stamps...they'd never heard of him. I told them he was amazing and that he sang folk songs & sea shanties...they didn't know what a sea shanty was. "Is that the name of a musical?"

Why didn't I get a notification for this? *messes with settings* This and Farewell to Nova Scotia are obligatory pub night songs here. I was looking for a more recent cover of this song a few months ago and no one had gotten to it yet. You might be the one KZbinr/Content Creator I've never requested anything from because...you just do it before I would think to. Even all the synthwave/cyberpunk stuff, it's just freaky. Take my money!
