For those that want to sing along: Lyrics Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage And make a Northwest Passage to the sea Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie The sea route to the Orient for which so many died Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage And make a Northwest Passage to the sea Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland In the footsteps of brave Kelsey, where his Sea of Flowers began Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage And make a Northwest Passage to the sea And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me To race the roaring Fraser to the sea Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage And make a Northwest Passage to the sea How then am I so different from the first men through this way? Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men To find there but the road back home again Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage And make a Northwest Passage to the sea

I've never listened to Stan Rogers' music, and I don't know much about what the song is referencing, but I can't listen to this without breaking down in tears, and I'm not really sure why. There's so much emotion and heart in it that I can't help feeling sad and wistful and lonely and a bit nostalgic, and I can't for the life of me figure out why it's hitting me so hard. But it is, and it's beautiful, and clearly I need to look up more of Rogers' songs.
@Dther99 Жыл бұрын
Y'know, I feel sort of the same way. This song makes me think really hard about my life, moving from one country to another, even though I've never even stepped foot in Canada. I think it's this shared desire for exploration and meaning, but also an acknowledgement that we're blessed with the shoulders of giants who came before. We don't have to worry about dying from Scurvy or starving to death when we go long distances, because people like Kelsie, Franklin and Thompson came before us. It's this beautiful wisdom that we aren't so different, since we seek the same thing- a better life, be it by gold or glory- but at the same time, their sacrifices have made it easier for us to follow. At the end of all journies, we find the same thing behind us. A road back home again.
