I took a photography class recently and one thing our mentor really told us is to never harass a model, possibly don't even touch the model just give out instructions or show them the pose you want them to make and to always remember to be ethical and professional. Shame on those pervs.

PREACH!!!! This is exactly why I quit modeling some years ago! It was awful and made me feel like crap. I was too tall or too blond or too whatever. And the grabs or gropes were constant! This is 100% true. I have experienced ALL of this! It's absurd to me. I left the modeling industry years ago because I just wouldn't put up with it. I'd much rather continue with my acting career. People say to me all the time I should be a model but then I tell them why I quit and they all say "well maybe it's your attitude." Standing up for myself is seen as an attitude problem? Sexual harassment is such a problem in the fashion world. I've been told I'm too short, too tall, too thin, I have bad teeth, I have bad skin, my legs are too thick, I should work out more, I should work out less, I should be manlier I should be more androgynous, I should have long hair, I should have short hair... Photographers have tried to touch me inappropriately, hit on me, placed their hands on me when there was no need to. And if I dare say anything, I would be dismissed. Thank you for this video! It's amazing how little this is talked about. I have been modeling on and off since 2007 and experienced the best things and some nasty things. The second time I met with Bruce Weber (models will know who he is) I left crying. I was 19 and was mortified at his approach to get pictures. I knew the power he has on the industry but I chose to walk away from that opportunity of possibly booking the campaign. It was unprofessional and perverted. It happens to everyone who meets him at least who I have talked to. The thing that gets me is when I do events (modeling does not pay enough) he is always at the head table. Oprah did a event with Ralph Lauren a few years ago and he sat across from her. A women who's purpose is to help people does not see the disgusting person in front of her. The public does not see past the magazines and TV 😟 makes me wonder about everything else in the world we don't know about. Thank you for this video Barret

Its really good you speak on this. I watched a documentary called Girl Model and another documentary I can't recall the name of and they both address this same problem. I think its something prevalent in the entertainment industry in general and people need to be warned and know what their rights are. No money is worth doing something you're not comfortable with.

Barrett you are so right about this. Many people think its all fun, glamorous and exciting but they do not know the dark side of modeling. I tried modeling myself in the late 90s and yes you do hear NO a lot. It does make you think and question yourself why are you getting rejected. I travel also a lot for go sees and it's not even guaranteed if you'll get picked. It is a really hard business and YES many times you work for free just to get that tear sheet from the magazine to give you more experience and exposure. I watched men's fashion shows in the early 90s and I've always wanted to model after seeing Cameron Alborzian, Michael Bergin, Markus Schenkenberg, and Mark Vanderloo on the runway. It just look so cool to wear those cool clothes and travel everywhere and get paid well. It seems interesting from that perspective but the reality of it, its really a jockpot.

I modeled for years in my youth and I had a hard time getting any work, because I too am a short model. Only 5' 9 1/2". Basically, you MUST be at least 6 feet and the first thing most places do before they even check your portfolio is what is his height. Especially at Wilhelmina. Sex on photo-shoots happens at lot too, there is little professionalism, especially on no pay shoots.

I'm a fashion designer, focus on menswear in L.A.. I'm not a big name, but once I do it's going to hit hard. I've seen and work with lots of male models/actors. What you said about working for free, I call it TFP (Trade for Photos). I always make it clear to the model that this is a collaborate project. Once they are on the set. I show them the highest respect for even modeling for me for free. I make sure they are comfortable that my team, work and act as professionals. I feed them, pay their parking, depending on some circumstances pay their gas in a location shoot. The models I've worked with usually do call me back, because they love my designs, and the respect I give them. It's people in the fashion industry whether they are lower and higher end that use their power to harass and take advantage of models whether they are women and men that gives this industry a bad rap. I'm pretty much a rebel and I don't go by the fashion industries standards. Thank you Barrett for discussing the bad side of modeling. For those who are wanting to model, please always approach it as a business and as professional as possible. That way who ever you model for will see that.

I can totally relate to this.. It's really hard to take criticism from agents and casting directors, especially if they don't even give you the time of day. It's a tough career that isn't going to be mine forever, which scares me because I have no idea what I want to do career wise besides modeling. Nothing guarantees that you'll make it so it's risky not having a backup plan. Another of my concerns about the modeling industry is faulty agencies that abuse their clients. I recently signed with another one about a week ago but I'm still skeptical of how reliable it is. Anyways, thanks for making this video, it's great to have someone else explain this.

Many years ago I was what my friends called the MACYS Sunday Newspaper Supplement Model. Such models are certainly not in the big time, but we were treated professionally and we were always paid. I even appeared in a few MACYS holiday TV commercials (acting as if I was having the best time of my life in whatever clothes they were pushing). Not glamorous, but it paid some bills while I went to college. I had the look of that time period, knew it, but didn't want the total hassle of a hard hitting model career. Coming from the other side of the fence, I honestly was finding it hard to dredge up emotion over the topic of this video... then I watched it. I have spent most of my life (pre-adult, and adult/gay) being made fun of and attacked because I have some extra poundage, and am not the nicest looking bulb in the pack. To this day, I don't go to bars... I have actually been insulted there by better looking guys (I tried an experiment 2 years ago, and was ostracized within 15 minutes by two guys next to me). Having said all the... who knew I would have something in common with someone experiencing the opposite condition. Good for you Barrett... the honesty is needed. I just watched this video and I felt it was awesome, I loved the fact that you didn't hold back anything. Allowing people to be informed as to what they would have to encounter. Speaking out isn't as easy as it always looks, it means being put in a bad light at time. Regardless, it's not that I found some of the content to be shocking, to the effect that the bullying and exploitation and rampant sexual harassment in some agencies is common place , but to talk about it ends your career. Great video. It is so true. Modelling is really harsh, 99% of the models are experiencing the worse of the industry .Most of the public only know of the 1% top models where they got paid thousands, flying to Paris to do a Gucci shoot or whatever. Even in the higher level, models are often got paid by trade not really by money. And not to mention most models starts really young and they are surrounded by these adults who should be responsible for their action so it is super easy for them to manipulate models to do all these things. I had no idea, I mean I sort of expected that there would be some sort of hardship like this but the way how media is portrayed and how the models' social media seem like they're having reasonable happy lives (just by look of it of course), I realized that what you really see on those models' live styles on social media aren't everything. Thank you so much for sharing this and I can't believe the whole sexual harassment would be just beyond humiliation. Just wish that you are happy about yourself, who you are is so much more important than what others say. NO MATTER WHAT! :)

ugh sexual harassment... disgusting souls who do this. ugh... I think it is possible everywhere, but if they are in the position to end you career, then they will use this. I have read that in the movie industry in hollywood it is the same. the guy who did the x-men movies for example was the same: telling 16 or 18 year old boys: I give you a career if you fuck with me. of course your video would make a bigger impact, if you would name who it was, because now it will probably dont change a lot.

You are amazing for doing this and thank you for being you. The truth is I really struggle with being pretty. I get tons of attention for it and not all of it is good. Everyone wants sex or a piece of me and it's exhausting. From creeps or people who just fall in love with me and just want to talk to me because I look pretty. When I was younger I'd shave my head and wear a hoodie just to stop people from staring at me when I walked down the street. I don't think people understand the price of being pretty. I guess I'm lucky to look the way I do but I attract a hell of a lot of bad energy too and people who just hate me because I'm attractive and think I'm a sex object. Men aren't allowed to talk about this so I'm glad you are putting this out there. I always loved Farrah Facett. I felt she was someone pretty who the world just took advantage of and got exploited and abused for it. I think it's so difficult as people want me to be something for them and then the pressure to live up to that is huge. I'm pretty therefore I have to be perfect and I'm not allowed to be anything other then what you want me to be. Anyhow thanks for doing this it's important stuff as so much of it is bullshit. I worked in porn and modelling made money at it but like you said it's not enough to live on. It's a great part time job that you can have fun with but seriously that's it. Enjoy the good people you meet along the way because there are good people but definitely protect yourself and your heart as there are lots of creeps out there too.

I modeled in the 80's, Paris, new York Tokyo, started in Seattle..I had so much nasty crap from some real bastards. I then went into fashion designing starting with Dior, YSL, Lanvin and believe me those small games were long gone in my past...although there were tons of drug addicts....

Thanks for speaking out about this, I thought I was the only one. So many people join the modeling industry because they seek validation, not knowing that the industry will have them fully confront their inner demons. Towns like LA have an exploitation system waiting to take advantage of young hopefuls. Luckily, I got out of it and found my self worth in the process before I was destroyed by it. What I find ironic is how after 3 years of being told I should model by friends, randomers, teachers and even being scouted before I finally gained the courage to send my portfolio images to agencies. After I did that I came straight on KZbin and this video was the first thing I was recommended to watch haha.

The big kicker, the sexual harassment, I knew he was gonna say that but wasn't looking forward to it. I hear all the time, from models on youtube and in social media about sexual harassment, and it's so sad to hear. Modeling is not something that people should be doing unless they really know who they are. I am glad you are speaking out about this, because nobody deserves to be treated that way, and I am glad you had a good head on your shoulders to say "no!".

Thirty years ago I help and encouraged a very handsome friend get into modeling. He worked with some of the top people, spent years in Europe. Now is in his mid-60's and living in Los Angeles. He still gets commercials and hand-modeling gigs. What you say in your video are in line with much of what I have observed. He has had a fascinating life, but limited in some self-development ways. He never married or had kids. He lived high off the hog for awhile, then has had many years of struggle. He has a girlfriend who helps support him, but I don't think it's the happiest. After about 40 years, since I met him (before he was a model) we are still friends. At times I envied his glamorous life, but in those years I have finished college, worked as a high school teacher for 30 years, and have a secure retirement in my own house. I would not trade. I appreciate what you say in your video, and I know that my friend would agree with 90% of it, or more. All best wishes. Get out there and have a life.

I am so glad you spoke out about photographers that take advantage of unsuspecting newbies in the modeling world. Thank God the Me too movement has exposed these photographers, stylist, and principles committing sexual harrassment, rape and abuse, an other sexual crimes. Crime is crime, and these criminals should be convicted for the molestations they are commiting. They all deserve hard jail time. By the way Barrett you not too short, I singlehandedly discovered a guy name Matt who was barely 5'10, and he became one of the top 20 male models in the world working to photogs like Stephen Meisel and appeared in ads for Louis Vuitton, David Yurman jewelry and even appearing on the cover of the women Italian Vogue magazine.

The media industry, including print, runway, film, television etc. has always been about a certain "look", first and foremost. Your "look" is what gets you noticed and ultimately hired. I KNEW there was going to be a sexual harassment thing. I wish I could say I wouldn't be that way but oh how tempting it would be to oil hot guys, etc. Actors and models are mistakenly thought to be prostitutes by many whether consciously or subconsciously because it's selling one's self. I used to be so upset at being fat and gay and then when I got into the Chub and Chaser community I got to see what the "Pretty people" go through. Never did I think I'd be in that situation as a fat gay dude. But I got a small taste of it and while it was so wonderful at first, I quickly started feeling uncomfortable as one guy after another just wanted to play with my belly and would barely look me in the face or treat me like a human being.

Very brave Barrett but let's be honest you took it pretty easy on the industry. The fact that you have to work for free in editorial shoots or free at all means your not a professional model you are a slave. A slave to a industry that preys on the young and naive and their mis-guided dreams. People are sold the glossy veneer of "being a model" but as you point out there is a dark underbelly that only insiders know about. When a plumber goes to a job at the end he gets paid. If you go to a job as a model and you don't get paid then your simply being USED.

Cool person you are, B. I remember my first booking in the 80's for a Cadbury commercial, and up to that point, my agents did not know I was gay. I had made friends with the makeup guy during the shoot and we were laughing, and my agents heard that I had tried to pick him up or something (I was not attracted to him, just nice finding someone to joke with on set that day) as it turned out the scene in 1988 was still very homophobic... especially with the casting directors! I was told to NOT be seen on the gay strip or in a disco - RIGHT!!!!! - as if a 24 yr old would NOT go out and try to have fun and maybe even fall in love! They were a 5 star agency that basically were a bunch of uptight bigots that would not get away with that today! In the end, you are a human who should not have to put up with ignorance nor be controlled by those who would stifle who you are just so they could sell you! Then the lead actor of the gig drunkenly puts himself all over me on the dance floor the next evening.... but that's another story! ( and not one he's proud of - alcohol affects many physical responses... hint, hint) Barrett - here's a quote that applies to you - please take it as a compliment: Rhett (to Scarlet): You should be kissed and often, and by someone who knows how. i am a photographer in a smaller town and am frequently approached to help a guy build his portfolio. in the past few years a half dozen of the models wanted to have free portfolio building sessions in return for sex. typically i refer them to statements like yours, and tell them to jump on a plane to LA or NYC and visit the agencies themselves as nothing beats face time. these young kids get it in their heads that modelling is a road paved in gold, and your position in this vlog is the reality. thank you for doing this.
