The first time I came to Shanghai was just after Sars and I had a great time and even then so many Chinese is Shanghai could speak English. Since then I have been to HK, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Wuhan, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Beijing. Had a great time every time. Then in 2005 I came to Nanning in the summer and stayed 2 months and went back to Canada and came back to Nanning in Jan 2006 and stayed there for 13 years. Best time of my life.

China has 5000 years of history and is among the world's oldest "continuous" civilization still alive today, whereas other ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia, Rome and Egypt have since succumbed to history. China has witnessed the birth and death of various other nations, the rise and fall of numerous other empires, yet China has survived the violent passage of time to modern times relatively intact, whereas even Rome eventually crumbled.

I first visited China in 1981 and then it was very poor and drab with the people all wearing blue or green overalls and riding bikes. On my second visit in 1986 things had already improved with people now wearing colourful western clothes, then on my many visits to China over the last 13 years I’ve seen things advancing and advancing, until today it is the most modern country in the world and a wonderful place to live.

I think motivation is most important for people learning Chinese and the best motivation to find an interest, be it listening to Mandarin songs, watching Chinese dramas, reading Chinese books, comics, manga _(manhua_ 漫画) Chinese anime _(dongman_ 动漫) or some other interest. Just like people learn Japanese because of Anime, or Korean because of K-Pop and Korean drama.

Great insight into China. I can relate so much to peoples opinions have changed about China. People said to me when I decide to move to China in 2000 why are you going there? At that time there was so many restrictions. I always remember we couldn’t get a hotel room. I went to a city I had never heard of Nantong in Jiangsu. I worked at the foreign language school teaching English. It was there where I met my Chinese wife. At that time I was the only foreigner. We had a traditional Chinese wedding over two days. I have so many incredible memories that about that time. One day I would love to write a book. Both my Children were born in China and they are bilingual. I have lived in Shanghai, Tianjin and Guangzhou and each of them have filled me with some many amazing memories. I have been lucky enough to travel all over China to many amazing places. We have spent the past 7 years in the Middle East and we are looking forward to returning next year.

Agreed. However, it could also be because the _"Yellow Peril"_ mindset never really died out in the West. Since 19th century, Westerners are accustomed to the notion of Western civilization, Western culture dominating the globe, so the very idea of a non-Western power surpassing the West is simply too frightening to imagine. In other words, it's white supremacy complex that won't accept the rise of an Asian superpower.

My first trip to China was to Beijing back in 1997. Totally different experience from other times I went back over the years. In 1997 there were tons of bicycles on the roads in Beijing and very few cars. And I could only stay in specific hotels reserved for foreigners. There were plenty of old alleyways which were filled with all sorts of small shops which have been removed. And the shopping was fairly restricted as well. I remember seeing a humongous Popeye's Chicken at one end of Tiananmen Square. The largest Popeye's Chicken I have ever seen, several stories high. Again, nothing like today.

Chinese have a proverb: _"It's better to travel 10,000 miles than to read 10,000 books"_ 读万卷书不如行万里路. Because travelling expands your horizons far better than reading books about places.

hello, this is a good way to introduce our country to the western people. I have been to germany, france, italy, danmark, and usa, I have to say most of western people has little knowledge about REAL china and its people. china is not a perfect country, but we're not that bad then what's described in your news. China has different way of running, different culture...

I just got a really interesting idea. It would be great if you could collab with some Chinese bloggers who lived abroad before, and whose parents are not camera shy and speak English(lived in a different China), so that you can get first-hand stories and experience from them. It will be so much fun! Bet it's gonna be unexpected and in all just a whole adventurous video that contains such diverse perspectives! Suggestion: 竹子. She is a kind of a hilarious fashion/lifestyle blogger who studied and lived in the uk, whose husband just learnt to speak Chinese within a year! Her dad also speaks really good English. But the most important thing is: her parents are just hilarious and not camera shy AT ALL!

Thank you guys so much for having such an open mind and curiosity to actually understand China and our history /culture. We are all different but after getting over the "misconceptions" one will realize that we all have more in common than difference, and that we're all one big family on this planet. 😊 It really warms our hearts (as a Chinese) that people like you are willing to overlook all the BS from the media and find out the real China on your own. 谢谢你们, 我们一起加油!😁 🙏

Barrett is so right about the big difference between the young and old, especially in China. That is China has been gone through the biggest change in Chinese history and fastest transformation no other country can match in the history of civilization. Change in ten years in China is equivalent of changes happened in a century in the West. That is the reason why the youngsters in China are so different than their parents and grand parents. They did not experience any of the hardship and political turmoil the older generation had experienced in China. The younger generation from China definitely are more modern and confidence. They are shocked to witness how bias and misinformed about China by the Western media when they are living or studying in the West. They could not believe how much negative publicities about China and nothing or very little about China's modernization and transformation in the right direction and raised standard of living in China. The West led by the US was hoping and always does that China's next generation would be influenced by the ideology and mentality of the West and hate their government so the West led by the US can take advantage of the situation and contain China. But the reality is more like the opposite as what they wished. In the past, about 70% of students from China study in the West, mostly in the US would stay on in the West for a better future and 30% go back to China after they are done with their studies. Now less than 20% would stay and more than 80% would go back to China for a better future. That is why, Trump and his administrations came up with new policies to prevent students from China to attend higher education in the US because the talented students from China will be no more use for the US because they will go back to China.
