@aprilshimengg.38213 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's entirely appropriate to equate these situations. Because in China, no matter where you are from, no matter which dialect you speak, everyone writes in Uniform Chinese (referred as traditional or simplified Chinese, most people can read both, but simplified Chinese is certainly easier to write and less time consuming because it's characters are simplified), so for people in China, their "mother tongue" is basically a dialect not a entirely different language, whereas in the case of Singapore, the official language is English and people's mother tongues are Malaise/Chinese/Tamil etc., and these are entirely different languages and are written differently. BTW, in northern parts of China, different dialects sounds quite similar to Mandarin and as someone who was born and raised in Beijing, I could easily understand dialects from many places in Northern China. And us from Beijing don't really speak perfectly standard Mandarin either, there are certain vocabularies/slangs that are unique to us, and we tend to add an /er/ at the end of some words when we are talking.

In May 2019, 14 of us American born Chinese cousins went to Xinjiang on our own organized tour group. Most of us are senior citizens and cannot speak Chinese. Our guide was a lovely Uyghur woman with green eyes who spoke her own language, Mandarin and perfect English. Yes, there were cameras and tight security at public / tourist places like hotels, shopping, and museums. We visited mosques and talked to local people with our limited Mandarin. They were curious about us because we looked Chinese but we did not speak Mandarin among ourselves. Their curiosity was satisfied when we explained that we were 4th and 5th generation overseas Chinese and that we spoke English. Many of our friends in Southern CA have made this trip to Xinjiang as part of organized Silk Road tours offered by tour agencies. So, yes, you can go to Xinjiang and see for yourself. Of course, a short tourist trip does not make you an expert and you are not shown any prisons or camps. You do see local people working and living normally like any other place.

We went to several different locations in Xinjiang and people seem to be living normally. They were out and about just like in any other cities. There were ominous public signs in Chinese and in their native languages that warn of “dark elements “ , meaning authorities will crack down on criminal activities like sedition and terrorism. thanks for all the effort to make the world a more peaceful place. With all the wealth and tech advancement, I see no reason why countries should be at odds with one another but to live in peaceful collaboration for the benefits of mankind. There should not be another hyped up cold war when there is none.

I am a Chinese living in Australia. Thank you for telling the world that any city in China is real and beautiful!We don't need to exaggerate and lie about our country. What kind of country is China now? I hope you have a chance to see and feel it! Not through the western media to present untrue and slander China! China welcomes you all at any time

My fellow Singaporean gave a very objective view. If you are not there, you are not in the position to at least speak about that. In Singapore, everyone learn English so that we can all communicate to each other, at the same time we preserve our heritage 👍🏻

yes, in the last generation people may having difficulty communicated in terms of speaking out with each other because of the different dialect BUT one good thing is the Chinese for thousand of years have the same text, so you are are educated or if you can read then you have no problem to communicate/understand with each other.
