You can also use large paperclips as well, and just wrap them with masking tape for the toothbrush sewing tool, if you don't have any wire. Binder clips can also be used instead of putting the fabric between your knees to steady the fabric, just clip it onto a board of some sort. Ms. L. Churchill (USA)
@BarriJayneMakes3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I sometimes use paperclips. Safety pins work quite well too, as long as you don't accidentally squeeze it open. 😁 When I've used a binder, I stck it down with blu tac, to keep it from sliding about. Thank you! Enjoy making your rug 😊

take a flat handled toothbrush and make your own needle. Cut off the part that hold the bristles just right behind that. With a dremel and sand paper attachment. Sand form the softened point of the needle. The other end use drill bit and make an oblong hole "eye" of the needle. Smooth the pointed and and the hole. Toothbrush needle. Should be about 4 1/2" long. About 15min of work. Or use a popcicle stick to make one. Had hubby make me another one for a friend.

@@BarriJayneMakes No problems. I once got a reply from some forum 4 years later. Person said "It just appeared today!! Where did it go in the meantime?" I'd forgotten my question by then lol. Re: rug bits; Probably there was no hot glue back in the day anyway; so the "fulling" and "matting" effect of washing sorted it out anyway. Not sure hot glue would survive, after thinking about it. How long are your strands of cloth are you using? also how are you getting the cloth threw the holes with out fighting with the knots of the strains being attached together. and also when your stitching, are you weaving under or over?
@BarriJayneMakes6 жыл бұрын
Hi Gala, the length depends on the fabric you're using. Sheets allows for longer strips, therefore attaching less pieces together. The shorter the fabric, the more often you have to attach. You can trim excess fabric after tying pieces together, give an extra tug and make sure the holes aren't too tight. With the direction of the weave, I can only suggest watching it over as it starts in one direction then continues in another and I can't really explain it in writing. Try this video to see if it helps kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXSYaoCnlsqXga8 Happy rug making 😊

Hint for finding the end / edge of the masking tape again: I cut a small bit off the end of the piece I'm using, and pop it onto the end on the roll, kind of sideways so it sticks out. I place it on the underside of the sticky masking tape, kind of stopping the tape from adhering to itself for eternity. Then to unroll a new piece of masking tape, I just pick up the unstuck bit. You don't need a huge strip, just a small one will do. (And that is exactly what happens to me if I don't add a random piece to the tape before it adheres to itself and drives me crazy...) 😉😉

P.S. 1:43 this has happened to me so many times and it wastes so much masking tape when it tears away like that. Hence my "tab" on the end of the tape so it won't stick down for about a 1/4 of an inch, which I can then take hold of and peel the masking tape away evenly. Hopefully.

Would T-shirt yarn work or is it too stretchy?
@BarriJayneMakes3 жыл бұрын
You can use most fabric, as long as it's washable and not likely to shrink loads. I'm quite sure you can, (please don't quote me) but I'd avoid stretching it. Maybe make a placemat and see how it goes? Have fun making your rug! 😀

What gauge is that crafting wire please? I tried to see off your video but couldn't.
@BarriJayneMakes2 жыл бұрын
I think I used 1mm or 1.25mm Any stiff bendable wire will work.

What guage wire are you using?
@BarriJayneMakes6 жыл бұрын
Hi Niccole! I use a 1mm gauge for some needles. You can use any thickness as long as it it sturdy. Paper clips or large blunt needles work also. Happy rug making! 😊

I'm using linen and it's fraying like crazy. I think I'll try a different material.
@BarriJayneMakes5 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that, Celestiallovin. I hate when that happens, sometimes it even happens with some cotton mix fabric. You will usually get some fraying, try and remove most before starting your knots. Maybe cut the linen instead of ripping so that you're not wasting the fabric. Good luck with your rug! 😊

Also watch my oval rug video, from 9mins to see how much fraying waste I get. It can be a bit annoying, but just persevere 😊
