This is the best tutorial I have seen to date on this method. Going out today to get a spool of satin ribbon. I teach sewing at a treatment center for women her in MI. I hope to learn this and teach it to them. It is a great skill because you can always find old sheets etc. to make rugs from. Thank you so much!

You can also use large paperclips as well, and just wrap them with masking tape for the toothbrush sewing tool, if you don't have any wire. Binder clips can also be used instead of putting the fabric between your knees to steady the fabric, just clip it onto a board of some sort. Ms. L. Churchill (USA)
@BarriJayneMakes
@BarriJayneMakes 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I sometimes use paperclips. Safety pins work quite well too, as long as you don't accidentally squeeze it open. 😁 When I've used a binder, I stck it down with blu tac, to keep it from sliding about. Thank you! Enjoy making your rug 😊

Banana Bread Hello there, thank you for your lovely message! I was born in Jamaica and have lived in London, England most of my life. The knots do look a little confusing but it is quite easy. The trickiest part is the start, which can be a bit fiddly but once you've created a couple of rounds it does become easier and it's just repetition. Hopefully you'll be able to give it a try one day. Take good care of you! 😄

take a flat handled toothbrush and make your own needle. Cut off the part that hold the bristles just right behind that. With a dremel and sand paper attachment. Sand form the softened point of the needle. The other end use drill bit and make an oblong hole "eye" of the needle. Smooth the pointed and and the hole. Toothbrush needle. Should be about 4 1/2" long. About 15min of work. Or use a popcicle stick to make one. Had hubby make me another one for a friend.

After weaving in the ends at the finish, as you just did, could you hot glue those final little bits to the back so they don't fray out or show up again if the item gets washed?

@@BarriJayneMakes No problems. I once got a reply from some forum 4 years later. Person said "It just appeared today!! Where did it go in the meantime?" I'd forgotten my question by then lol. Re: rug bits; Probably there was no hot glue back in the day anyway; so the "fulling" and "matting" effect of washing sorted it out anyway. Not sure hot glue would survive, after thinking about it. ❤️ Some sort of permanent fabric glue would hold better in laundry than the all-purpose sticks for a glue gun. Or even a couple of hand stitches after tucking in the ends, to hold them in place if it's slippery cloth like some synthetics.

It's great to be able to say "I made this" 😊 Although I feel a darning needle might be too pointy to make smooth work, try out different tools and see what works best for you. And enjoy 😊

When you are adding a second knot , is it in the same space ? When you are going around doing one knot then doing 2 is the second one in the same space ?

I have a ton of skinny "strings" of fabric, all different lengths and varying widths. Many are uneven widths across. Trimmings from squaring up fabric for quilting. Do you think they would work for a project like this or would they be difficult to work with since they are rather uneven?

I would just go with the flow and see how it goes, starting with placemats and then maybe let it grow. I think it will make a fabulous raggity rug! Have fun! 😊

Why do some people use a running strip and others do not? I’m just getting ready to start my first one and wondering the advantage/disadvantage of the running strip. Thanks!

Hi, there are different techniques to making a rug and this is the only one I've tried. I believe the 'spine' bulks it out and helps to make the rug sturdy. Enjoy making your rug! 😁

Hi Betty, I'm not sure what to suggest now. I would normally say don't pull the spine and add more stitches, but you've obviously already done that. The only thing is to maybe start again? If I lived near I would help for sure. I can only wish you good luck. Sorry I couldn't help 🍀🤞🏾

What's the proportion from spine to the working yarn to start with when I I want to only use one roll of ribbon like your satin one? I guess the knots takes about 3 times the length ?
@BarriJayneMakes
@BarriJayneMakes 2 жыл бұрын
Hello. To be honest I can't remember. It was all trial and error. I'm thinking approximately 3 metres for the spine and 12 for the working piece. It will depend on the overall length of the fabrics. Sorry, I couldn't be more specific 💫

How long are your strands of cloth are you using? also how are you getting the cloth threw the holes with out fighting with the knots of the strains being attached together. and also when your stitching, are you weaving under or over?
@BarriJayneMakes
@BarriJayneMakes 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Gala, the length depends on the fabric you're using. Sheets allows for longer strips, therefore attaching less pieces together. The shorter the fabric, the more often you have to attach. You can trim excess fabric after tying pieces together, give an extra tug and make sure the holes aren't too tight. With the direction of the weave, I can only suggest watching it over as it starts in one direction then continues in another and I can't really explain it in writing. Try this video to see if it helps kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXSYaoCnlsqXga8 Happy rug making 😊

Hint for finding the end / edge of the masking tape again: I cut a small bit off the end of the piece I'm using, and pop it onto the end on the roll, kind of sideways so it sticks out. I place it on the underside of the sticky masking tape, kind of stopping the tape from adhering to itself for eternity. Then to unroll a new piece of masking tape, I just pick up the unstuck bit. You don't need a huge strip, just a small one will do. (And that is exactly what happens to me if I don't add a random piece to the tape before it adheres to itself and drives me crazy...) 😉😉
@Kayenne54
@Kayenne54 2 жыл бұрын
P.S. 1:43 this has happened to me so many times and it wastes so much masking tape when it tears away like that. Hence my "tab" on the end of the tape so it won't stick down for about a 1/4 of an inch, which I can then take hold of and peel the masking tape away evenly. Hopefully.

You can use most fabric, as long as it's washable and not likely to shrink loads. I'm quite sure you can, (please don't quote me) but I'd avoid stretching it. Maybe make a placemat and see how it goes? Have fun making your rug! 😀

@BarriJayneMakes
@BarriJayneMakes 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that, Celestiallovin. I hate when that happens, sometimes it even happens with some cotton mix fabric. You will usually get some fraying, try and remove most before starting your knots. Maybe cut the linen instead of ripping so that you're not wasting the fabric. Good luck with your rug! 😊
